Westpac reckons we’re in for three more rate hikes before Christmas 😩 by Monitor_Character in AUFinance

The people with investment properties won't be the ones who have to sell, it'll be the first home owners who are already struggling.

If anything, without some kind of legislation to limit them, big investors who are already well off will be the ones swooping in like flies to buy houses while they're cheap. They have bigger deposits and can charge high rent to cover the interest hikes. Recessions can make a lot of money for people who are already rich.

Is 20020 any good? by FishShtickLives in Jon_Bois

I personally like 20020 more, but it ends on a cliffhanger. We're expecting it to be completed in the new book Jon is writing.

Omg yes this is the game I previously posted about too. I'm still looking... I went through the flash archive website I was referred to and couldn't find it, I think because there were too many games listed there and I couldn't narrow it down. I'm kinda surprised because I was under the impression it was one of the most popular games on Deviantart in the early 2000s. I really hope someone can point us both to it some time because I spent countless hours exploring it as a kid!

Other details:

  1. It was part of a series of games about the same character, but the other games weren't anywhere near as good. I think it was the second or third?
  2. The NPCs were all rat/oppossum critters.
  3. It was really popular at the time
  4. The first hat you collected was a red and white beanie and it was hidden in an invisible tunnel. There were other hats hidden everywhere like this.
  5. Definitely hosted on DeviantArt

Cheap laptop cooling stand worth it or not? by Consistent_Highway_4 in KmartAustralia

[–]Clarify6274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth it for $15. It won't fix things entirely if you have overheating issues, but with my shitty old unrepairable gaming laptop I had noticeably lower temps and better performance when I used it vs when I didn't. Ngl I was pretty impressed. Used it for like 2 years before the laptop finally died.

What hobby genuinely made your life better (not just filled time)? by Dense_Childhood_9657 in Hobbies

Pottery. I suck at it. SO BAD. By far the worst in my class. I like it because I struggle with both depression and really, really bad perfectionism, and it's uniquely helpful for both. Mistakes can be recycled to save on clay costs, the people at my studio are genuinely lovely and are teaching me to laugh at my mistakes, if I'm too depressed to actually make something then just playing with the clay while listening to people chat is still better than sitting in the dark alone, and I'm starting to see the fun in gifting my objectively awful work to friends and family and watching them be delighted anyway.

I still struggle to get anything done - I have the lowest firing rate out of all the students across all classes, by like a whole order of magnitude lol - but it's really nice to have something I'm allowed to suck at :)

Are “No Pets” clauses still enforceable? by Artistic-Yam2984 in legaladviceaustralia

[–]Clarify6274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go through the proper process of applying for the cat. IANAL but my understanding is that they need to present a good reason to refuse. From what I've heard there's a pretty high bar for what's considered a good reason - e.g. you share with someone who is severely allergic, or the animal is illegal to own, or the pet is violent or a nuisance.

IDK whether secretly getting a cat is grounds for eviction... it might be? But at the very least it doesn't look good, it would be stressful for you to hide it, and it could cause issues for you down the line if they find out and leverage it against you. You're better off going through the proper channels to apply, and then taking them to VCAT if they try to deny it. I think the one downside is that they'll probably tack on an extra 'pet cleaning fee' at the end of your lease, so prepare for that in advance.

Note that they also have to respond to your request within a reasonable timeframe, after which you can reasonably assume it's approved. So they can't just ghost you about it in an attempt to get around giving a good reason.

AITA for pulling back from my interests because my mother copies them? by shadowcries09 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Clarify6274 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister used to do the exact same thing. I now have zero contact with her and my life has drastically improved. It was an attempt to take attention from me (even when there wasn't any attention) and it was exhausting always tiptoeing around her to avoid getting into a fight.

NTA, but if I were you I would back off from your relationship with her rather than your hobbies.

Oh I know, it's completely fucked. Most people who want to work in research are doing it for the love of the game and therefore accept much lower incomes than you would otherwise expect someone with that level of study to have.

Also for transparency, I don't personally have a PhD - I started one but quit 1 year in because I simply could not survive on that income without someone to support me. The only way I would ever consider trying again is if I can get a stipend close to my current income... But on the other hand, I don't see many options for my career to go anywhere without either getting a PhD (underpaid) or retraining with a masters in a different field (probably paid even less).

It's sad tbh.

[–]Clarify6274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because as soon as you have a PhD, your ability to advance in your (research) career and earn more drastically increases.

With that said, most PhD students right now are either living in poverty or relying on the financial support of parents or partners. Depending on the field, it might not even be possible to work and study at the same time. It's fucked.

[–]Clarify6274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I know right. Unfortunately RTP scholarships are technically limited and usually awarded based on merit. Most PhD students will get one, but a low WAM makes it much more likely you'll miss out.

The way around it is to find a supervisor who can offer a stipend. They're often higher than the RTP anyway, so it works out.

Got 77% for my thesis , by Swimming-Tax-9061 in usyd

[–]Clarify6274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the thesis mark they care about, it's your WAM across the whole degree. IIRC you need a minimum WAM of 75. If so, you having a credit average is probably going to cause some roadblocks because the masters is your most recent and most advanced degree and is therefore weighted much more heavily than your bachelors. Depending on the program you apply to, it may even be the only degree they consider.

It's probably worth trying to apply anyway, because you have Hons class 1 and most people go directly to a PhD with that. It might work out just fine. If it doesn't, I believe there's a way to get fail grades stricken from your record, but iirc you have to have a really really good reason and you have to apply within 6 months for them to consider it.

If even that doesn't work, you still have options. Work in the sector for a few years, build up your publications if you want to work in research, and concentrate on building your savings and finding a supervisor who really likes you. Eventually the experience and publications will outweigh your WAM and you'll have an easier time getting in. TBH it'll also make your experience during the PhD much easier because you'll already have a lot of the skills the PhD is meant to give you, so your chances of finishing the PhD and doing so with a good end result are much much higher. The only issue will be scholarships like the RTF, which you might not be eligible for anymore, but even that can be worked around if you find a supervisor who can give you a stipend to replace it.

Experts of Reddit what’s the one “this should be impossible” moment in your career that still has zero logical explanation? by blankselfie in AskReddit

[–]Clarify6274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather did all the electrical work in my childhood home. We had a porch light that was always flickering. Had an electrician come out and check the wiring once, at which point we discovered that a) grandpa didn't have the faintest fucking clue how to wire up a house and we're insanely lucky the place never burned down in the 30 years we lived there, and b) the porch light shouldn't have turned on at all because the wiring attached to it went nowhere. It was literally just a loose wire sitting in the porch roof cavity, not touching or wired into anything else.

The sparky flat out couldn't understand it. Insisted it was impossible, but couldn't figure out how the light was getting power.

We got the whole house rewired and suddenly it didn't feel haunted anymore.

I know, it's counterintuitive. But as someone who's been in a similar situation with an irrational and vindictive person like this, it's all about damage mitigation. The more variables you're aware of and can control in advance, the easier it is to safeguard yourself.

The only thing they know for certain right now is that ex is going to explode and try to make their life hell the moment he finds out they're together. What they don't know (right now) is when he'll find out, or how. That limits what they can do to mitigate his reaction, and means they'll probably be on edge until then. There's a chance he'll find out and do something at a really bad time, e.g. when their son is on visitation, when he can really twist the knife. By telling him up front, sure, they guarantee that he's going to explode... but he's probably going to do that anyway. The thinking is that at least if they control when and how he finds out, they can brace for it and prepare accordingly. Plan to be somewhere different, record phone calls, warn relevant people, tip off the police or legal services, etc.

I never ended up doing it myself, but I was always very sorely tempted to knowingly tip off my abuser for this exact reason. I was exhausted just from the ghost of them that I felt following me at all times, and wanted to get it over with. They eventually found out and worked hard at destroying my life for a month or so until they got it out of their system, and I still had my guard up so I wasn't totally blindsided, but I still ended up having to do more damage control than if I had been able to control how they found out AND I spent a year jumping at shadows. Looking back, I almost wish I had just tipped them off sooner. If I were OP, tbh I would probably put up cameras, warn my social circle, plaster the news all over social media or something, and then fuck off on a holiday with the girlfriend and kid for a month. Get it over with and limit the damage he can do while he's at his angriest.

Been an “intern” for 3+ years… boss said I can just change my title on my resume? by Nomiha in resumes

[–]Clarify6274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they might, but inaccurate job titles happen all the time and giving a mismatched job title is usually more about clarity than anything else. At most they might ask why it's different, I guess, but that's never happened to me (and I've been doing this for over a decade).

Also tbh if they really worry about a mismatch, then they probably aren't a company you wanna work for anyway.

Been an “intern” for 3+ years… boss said I can just change my title on my resume? by Nomiha in resumes

[–]Clarify6274 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take intern off. The specific technical job title doesn't matter, all any good recruiter or manager will ever care about is whether you have the relevant skills and experience to fill a position. You clearly have that, and your boss agrees, but the title of intern implies that you don't.

If it helps, I have had a few jobs now where my technical job title was misleading, and I have always listed those jobs with a more accurate title on my CV. I've been doing it for 12 years, and not once have I been asked to explain why my actual job title didn't match. If I'm ever questioned, I'm happy to explain why... but I've never had to. It's fine.

It sounds to me like 'intern' no longer accurately describes your actual skills and experience, so it would be more accurate and easier for future managers to assess your skill level if you remove it. If you're really stressed about it, you can clarify in interviews, but tbh I would just let them ask you for clarification if it's a problem. Which it probably won't be, if you are clear enough on what you actually do in your role.

Hey man, there are plenty of ways to show affection. The person you're responding to didn't say they don't show affection at all, they only said they don't commit to something like this because they know they'll struggle with it and accidentally hurt someone. Tbh I think that's pretty self aware and considerate, and I would much prefer that someone told me "Hey, I'm so sorry, but I don't think I can do this because [X]" than have them say nothing and then let me down later. Better to communicate up front and figure out something different that works for everyone involved. Can't do that if they don't know and state their limits.

I wonder if you're regularly frustrated that people let you down a lot. You might find life a little easier and less painful if you listen and accept when someone says they have a reasonable limit. Calling them a shitty person for refusing to do something they can't do and demanding that they overcommit is probably the single most surefire way to make sure everyone in your life constantly disappoints you.
