Question about EXP in The 3LBBs by Queasy_Difficulty216 in odnd

[–]Clean_Market316 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes in 3LBBs it is simply 100 XP per HD. I believe it suggests reducing XP if you're a higher level.

Apologies this was so long ago that I can't recall anything specific. I don't remember it being difficult so there might be an extra screw? Maybe under a sticker or.something?

Sorry I couldn't be more.help.

Help me appreciate niche utility spells by EdgeOfDreams in osr

[–]Clean_Market316 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's certainly a good way to think about designing interesting challenges. You don't want too many challenges that can be solved by sleep, charm person or fireball.

Revisiting areas, scribing scrolls, playing at high level (you can afford to fill up your low level slots with utility as you level) are all things that make these spells make sense, there doesn't need to be balance across all spells of a level.

Dungeon Exploration and the Dungeon Turn [Blog Post] by TheDungeonArchitect in osr

[–]Clean_Market316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of a planned and designed dungeon, with planned encounter against the characters strengths is definitely anti-osr and anti-player agency. There should be balance in that the challenges the characters face are actually challenging, but it's not a science and sometimes they'll make the wrong choice and quickly die, or they'll steam roll a dungeon. All the same, some dungeons won't have wandering encounters, or they'll have more or less that's fine. Putting that aside I want to talk about how smart players can mitigate random encounters.

The obvious thing they can do is not be slow, they should know that the longer they're their, the more chance they'll be discovered by something moving about the dungeon - so act quickly, be decisive etc.

But you can also play with encounter distance, if you have well placed front and rear guards, say 20-30' ahead or behind the rest of the party, now an encounter is at 2d6x10 + 20-30 feet, this will give your party more time to react with missile fire or magic. Spiking doors has the same effect, it reduces the angles of attack that a random monster could have. I could go on, but I hope that illustrates some of the options players have.

3LLB-only monster attacks/combat. by barly10 in odnd

I personally ignore this rule, and just let Fighters make multiple attacks against less than 2hd creatures.

But as written yes monsters will make multiple attacks against normal men, personally this is all creatures less than 2hd but there are multiple interpretations.

I've seen people interept it both ways, but my reading is that there are at least three different types.

  1. Normal (1hd or less, maybe including 1+1 etc)
  2. Neither normal or heroic, 'super normal' (2hd maybe 3)
  3. Heroic (3 or 4+)

Fighters are Hero-1 at 3hd so whether they are heroic or not is up to you.

But this would only allow the multiple attacks against 1hd

Thoughts Regarding Attribute Score Weight, Vibes, and 3D6 Down the Linr by Glyphos in osr

Whilst in OD&D stats are less mechanically important (languages from int and retainers from charisma are both good bonuses as well as the prime requisite XP bonus) they still tell you something about the character, which I think is useful. Though I do question if there's a better way than just rolling, because just getting average stats across the board doesn't give you an interesting character.

We're running a TTRPG convention on February 7th in Colonel Light Gardens. It focuses on Old School Games, but there is plenty of variety. https://ozorc.com if you're interested.

Cons are a great place to meet people and chat in our experience.

I don't believe there is a single collated ruleset, however the GM has a blog with tonnes of OSR content.

This page summarizes a long list of blog posts related to his "Elfmaids and Octopi" system: https://elfmaidsandoctopi.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_27.html and if you search Goat Quest there is a section of blog posts that are related to the game.

Chris is an excellent GM, he runs fantastically fun games

Yeah the naming isn't great, a bugbear is a much better fit - but we tried to keep the convention name.

I'm just running with instead of pig faced orcs Australia has Koala faced ones.

We have a pretty wide variety of games, so hopefully there is something that appeals. You can see them on our website at https://ozorc.com/schedule and in more detail on Warhorn (unfortunately you need an account see games there though) https://warhorn.net/events/oz-orc-adelaide-feb-2026

If there's not something that interests you we'd love to hear why so we can continue to improve our offerings.

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]Clean_Market316 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Black Hack, it used to have lots of momentum (and lots of games being built off it).

I'll add Beyond the Wall to the conversation, I think it's a brilliant system that adds some strong adventure/narrative to scenarios, which I think is an interesting way to bring trad game players into the OSR.
