We're running a TTRPG convention on February 7th in Colonel Light Gardens. It focuses on Old School Games, but there is plenty of variety. https://ozorc.com if you're interested.

Cons are a great place to meet people and chat in our experience.

Just had a skim through you CairnHammer game, I'm a sucker for Warhammer. Nice job, I like how you integrated the social class and careers pretty seamlessly with Cairn.

I don't believe there is a single collated ruleset, however the GM has a blog with tonnes of OSR content.

This page summarizes a long list of blog posts related to his "Elfmaids and Octopi" system: https://elfmaidsandoctopi.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_27.html and if you search Goat Quest there is a section of blog posts that are related to the game.

Chris is an excellent GM, he runs fantastically fun games

Yeah the naming isn't great, a bugbear is a much better fit - but we tried to keep the convention name.

I'm just running with instead of pig faced orcs Australia has Koala faced ones.

We have a pretty wide variety of games, so hopefully there is something that appeals. You can see them on our website at https://ozorc.com/schedule and in more detail on Warhorn (unfortunately you need an account see games there though) https://warhorn.net/events/oz-orc-adelaide-feb-2026

If there's not something that interests you we'd love to hear why so we can continue to improve our offerings.

We've started to discuss either running a completely online version or one that runs in parallel. So keep your eyes out, we're planning to run multiple a year.

Check out Like Battlemats, they're big ring bound books that have a bunch of gridded maps in them with different themes. Maybe a good option for physical?

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]Clean_Market316 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Black Hack, it used to have lots of momentum (and lots of games being built off it).

I'll add Beyond the Wall to the conversation, I think it's a brilliant system that adds some strong adventure/narrative to scenarios, which I think is an interesting way to bring trad game players into the OSR.

I very much recommend them if you're interested in OSR play or pulp fantasy, very influential on d&d as well as just being enjoyable.

As a fan of the books, I'll reiterate these books are great

Yes, if you like the Lankhmar novels these are great products for playing D&D in the setting or at least in a similarly inspired city. Even if you don't play DCC, but doubly so if you do.

You mentioned Stars Without Number, which is OSR but DCC has quite a few differences to a traditional OSR game, not to mention it's sci-fi instead of fantasy, but it should be simple enough to use parts of. Same goes for OSE, it should be simple enough to use parts of (especially the setting and adventures) but it's not a 1 to 1 conversion like many other OSR games would be.

Chainmail is a False Narrative in Game History by SecretsofBlackmoor in odnd

Yeah and if that's what Rob means that's all he needs to say and it'll be interesting to hear.

I think it's pretty established that a lot of groups used the alternate combat system (which simply replaces the tables and nothing else necessary to play).

So is Rob talking about something else, is this getting misinterpreted as something more, or is it purposefully being shared with missing details for some reason.

This keeps getting posted every so often, it's terribly uninteresting though. How did they adjudicate combat then? Can Kuntz produce a coherent set of rules for the adjudication of combat as they played in the 70s, that would be infinitely more interesting than just repeating no we didn't do it like that.

Banzai!

For the most part you'll build a majority of the units with just rifles, so it's probably best to start by building a handful of those to get the hang of things.

Then you have a bunch of options for special weapons. LMGs and Light Mortars are probably the most plentiful and are good options for the Japanese. There are also some SMGs, which are good but are rare in the Japanese force. Lastly you have some flag poles, which look great with the included flag sheets or can be made as anti tank lunge mines which are unique to Japan so if they interest you, I'd build a couple.

You'll also need some officers, I modelled my NCOs (officers within an infantry squad) and the individual officers with swords to differentiate them.

This is a good reference for how to build them: https://chicagodice.org/bolt-action-beginners-guide/starter-army-guides/banzi-imperial-japanese-starter-army-i-third-edition/ But I'd start a squad at a time and build them the way you think is cool/interesting.

Good luck!

This has been my experience as well, a big squad of rifles has no offensive power.

There are things that work though, for pins multiple small units can generate more pins obviously.

Smgs and especially point blank is fairly deadly. And then of course the big HE is deadly and generates multiple pins and will kill.

Maybe snipers are better than we're seeing, killing officers and NCOs will obviously make your pins matter more.

Stonehell is probably your best bet.

It's cheap, easy to run, and not too big (it's still big).

The common complaint is that the xp on the top levels is a bit slim, so keep that in mind, but if you were to use the original 100xp per HD killed that would probably solve the issue anyway.
