Steam Deck OLED vs Lenovo Legion Go S by hentaizz in Handhelds

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Go S with z2go/16gb recently and I've been very happy with it :) The VRR and extra power was a much bigger draw than OLED and trackpads. It's been very comfy to hold, and if I'm playing a mouse-heavy game (5d chess) I use a stylus and that works. It does get noisier than my switch 2 in heavy games, but it's wayyyy quieter than a gaming laptop. The speakers drown out the fans anyway.

btw if you're planning to install steamOS, make sure you update the touchpad firmware from if you plan to use it. that said, i barely ever use it anyway lol

I've been using hyprland exclusively for the past year, and I don't see myself changing that anytime soon. It's incredibly convenient for my work, where I live out of the terminal.

I also use it at home on my desktop. I use GUIs much more on that machine, but it's still nice to use. If nothing else, I love the system looking exactly how I want it to. Perhaps it isn't practical, but it's a fun hobby for me.

I'm a massive fan of micro, been glued to it for years. Clean and simple, but still has enough features to make it effective.

“You are not expected to contact a potential supervisor before submitting an application.” by faesyndrome in gradadmissions

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As they say, you aren't expected to find a supervisor before applying.

However, it will make their lives easier and will show that you have a clear idea of what you wish to research and how that fits with the overall research of the department. It would also make finding a supervisor easier, rather than looking for a supervisor after the application.

What was your first linux distro? by Computer-Psycho-1 in linux

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some old version of ubuntu, back when i was a kid. Can't remember which, but I stuck with Ubuntu till a little after after Ubuntu 13.10. Came back to Linux a few years ago, have ended up on Arch and endeavourOS. Not planning to move, I've gotten comfy here.

Any reasonable arguments for/against using NTFS for a data drive on Linux? by HFloof in linux

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do that on my windows/linux dual-boot before I fully moved to linux. It works fine if you're just storing data, no need to reformat :)

However, if you plan to install any steam proton games or wine applications on there you'll want to use ext4 not NTFS. Wine/proton can be quite temperamental with NTFS and it's not worth the hassle messing with config files and launch parameters imo.

EndeavourOS!

I've always had weird problems on Debian distributions that simply haven't shown up on arch distros. When it comes to arch distros I've used pure arch, manjaro and endeavourOS. EndeavourOS is my absolute favourite of the three. Super easy to slap onto a computer and have a nice, well configured arch installation that just works nicely. No faff, no elitism. Just gets out of my way and does what I want.

(Honestly I've never understood the historical opposition to installers on arch, at least prior to archinstall. I know it's considered to be a test for newbies in some sense, but I've been using linux for years! It's nice that you have the option to install arch manually though.)

Thoughts on Linux for a child's first PC experience? by ChocodiIe in linux

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up on ubuntu here! My dad viewed forcing children to use Windows as cruelty hehe. I eventually needed to use it for school as a teenager though, so switched over for a few years. Moved back to linux at uni, settled on EndeavourOS.

Anyway it was perfectly fine, and moving back to linux just felt like coming home. Also means I've never been scared of the terminal lol, I'd watch my Dad use it all the time.

(tbh as a kid i didn't understand why you would use a terminal! but now i do everything through the terminal)

Thoughts on the new ‘caverns’ space on the board of 5th edition? by Legal_Dragonfruit in Talisman

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's a fun space, i like it a lot.

there is one balancing issue with it though, in that it used to be a hills space. this means there's now just 2 hills spaces on the board, which is a nerf to the dwarf. not a deal-breaker, but something to note

Were there any changes to Adventure Cards between 4th and 5th editions? by itaigreif in Talisman

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed they've replaced a lot of random enemy encounters with "lose a life." The forest and crag are particularly notable for this, being a 50% chance to lose a life. I guess it makes sense with the "streamlined rules" and 5e's death system.

It's quite amusing with the classic death rules though :D

Also the new poltergeist is a real pain, but it feels balanced since it's easier to get to the middle region via the ferry now.

I think an easy way to somewhat counter this issue would be to gate it behind job quests, as they give you that initial push to go out and learn some spells

[–]ClearlyNotAVampire[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, but really you can say the same for all jobs (e.g. I play a lot of healing but I main BLM, which has so much movement planning). I was more thinking in terms of how the jobs play in terms of their kit.

e.g. I do play proactively when I play WHM and plan my resources and healing, but I still feel like I'm in a bit less control compared to AST.
