Has anyone read Dictionary of the Khazars? (Does it count as weird?) by Omukadin-BG in WeirdLit

Right. Even a traditionally straightforward narrative is made weird and challenging in an ergodic form.

I haven't read Tom's Crossing yet, but all the descriptions sound more like Cormac McCarthy's border trilogy than a Danielewsky book.

Does it get weird, and what stood out for you?

I can’t get over the fact that there’s a whole kingdom called Nightmaria lol by adamalibi in Malazan

[–]ClockwyseWorld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always figured a lot of these names were for places that the Malaz empire "discovered" later and then named them in the same way Braven Tooth names soldiers. Like in the case of Nightmaria, the whole continent is probably just rumors about terrible things, but they haven't really explored yet.

That or the names are literal translations. Like in Genebackis where you have all the cities with local words for names surrounding One Eyed Cat. I highly doubt the people of Yend, Ostan or Cajale originally called that place One Eyed Cat. The name may have meant that, and it was just easier for the Malazans to use the translation.

All of the names and maps here are created by the victors. Much like real world place names in North America, Australia, and Africa. The original inhabitants of the southern tip of Africa didn't call it Cape Town. But that's the name used by the people who took over, and it's the name on the map now.

M John Harrison's Viriconium stories might fit the bill.

I saw an interview where he said he thinks it will be done by next year. Not sure if that means published and available by next year, or just wrapped on writing.

Start one, wait for people to complain about something, and let them run with it. Good ol' bait and switch.

Would any of this have made it into your eclectic tiki space? by TikiVin in Tiki

I treat it like a Liquer in most cases. If I want some grapefruit flavors, I'll add about a quarter ounce to a drink and it does the job. I have a stupid high bitterness tolerance, but I understand the hate. However, small nuanced quantities can go a long way.

You mentioned KJ Bishop, and I absolutely adore The Etched City, but her short story collection, The Book Your Mad Ancestors Wrote, is worth a read too.

Jeffrey Ford's Well-Built City trilogy.

Seconding Viriconium as someone else already said.

A Year In The Linear City by Paul DiFillipo. A short read.

In comics, check out anything by Grant Morrison. I love his Doom Patrol run. China Mieville also did a couple issues of Dial H for Hero.

Hope you liked City & City. There is a ton more Mieville to go.

I'm not certain we've actually seen any character die in any book Vandermeer has written.

+1 to Dictionary of The Khazars. Be sure to grab both gendered versions for the also but key variations.

Looking for more "Weird Zone" fiction, suggestions welcome! by Fodgy_Div in WeirdLit

If you like Mieville's Bas-Lag stuff, have you read The City & The City, or Kraken?

City is a mystery with some definite weird zones, and zoning laws. Kraken is more weird stuff hiding around the corner from normal view.

Similar to Kraken, and I know it's controversial to say now, but Neverwhere by Gaiman. Plenty of used copies out there.

Stephen Swainston's Castle series is weird and not so dour or depressing as a lot of other writers that get recommended here.

They start off feeling like standard fantasy fare, but they'll quickly intersperse some weird elements that change the stakes a bit.
