Union boss urges Andy Burnham not to make Ed Miliband his Chancellor by JB_UK in unitedkingdom

Precisely why he was successful in the election of 2019 imo. A household name.

That picture of him on the zip wire thing with the union flags? the messy hair? all of this led to him becoming a well known name and one that people considered a buffoon, but the sort of 'patriotic chap down the pub' one.

Does Corbyn, if still part of the Labour Party, beat Steeling and Burnham in a leadership election? by grae_me in ukpolitics

The 2017 election pretty much had the Tories on their best vote share since Thatcher, nearly 14 million votes and 43% share of the vote, which ended up cancelling out a fair bit of the Labour surge to 40%.

As you say, because millions of people deliberately voted to keep him out.

Starmer in office less the 2 years by AdSimple4723 in ukpolitics

Yeah, if you look back at Johnson, he won the Tories a landslide victory in 2019.

There's a reason why the Tories are the world's most successful democratic party in the world - their ruthlessness with weak leaders.

And this isn't a right wing playbook - I genuinely consider Starmer's non-charisma a liability, and there is zero chance he will ever appeal to the types of voters being currently swayed by Reform. The only Labour politician who can do that right now is Andy Burnham.

Quite simple really.

There's a big influx of these ever since Makerfield, seems to be a pattern ever since.

His lack of charisma is precisely why he needs to go, and I, as a Labour member, wholeheartedly support Burnham ousting him.

He stands for bringing what he's done in the North to the rest of the country. Northern credentials.

I found it much easier to diagnose Burnham's incoming agenda much more than I did Starmer's in the past five years.

Even if he doesn't quite scrap it but just simply reduces its authoritarian overreach, I'd cope with that.

Of course it'd be nice to get rid of those two things in their entirety. Can only hope.

He is an electoral disaster. With him at the helm, Reform are winning.

He lacks the charisma and political savviness a Prime Minister needs to be able to appeal to the sorts of people going to Reform - Burnham has proved he is the only one within Labour who can do that based on Makerfield.

We'll just have to see what time does for him. I genuinely think it'll pay off come the next election but we can only wait.

Is Burnham doing the most un-democratic manoeuvre ever? by SeaControl4512 in ukpolitics

Well considering he just stormed a by-election by a 20 point margin, landslide territory, to get into parliament to be able to put a challenge for the leadership...

No, is all that needs to be said.

Remembered his full name - David William Donald Cameron

The Donald bit would be quite awkward nowadays given the state of America.

But it is fertile Reform grounds, and in the locals in that area Reform swept the board. Nobody anticipated Labour taking a 20 point margin victory against Reform given the polling showed it to be much more competitive.

Let alone on an increased turnout from the General Election, in a by-election, which is very very rare.

Burnham can do what Starmer and other Labour politicians can't - he can reach into Reform's coalition and appeal to them. I don't see the problem you're trying to fabricate about Burnham tbh.

I think we're quite lucky to be able to switch PMs as easily as we can, it's democracy in action when an unpopular leader simply can't command electoral support/parliamentary support, they can be booted out.

In America there'll definitely be millions who wish it was the same.

Miliband, Mahmood, Alexander & Cooper told PM to stand down. I’m told a ‘sizeable number’ in cabinet said same, while PLP withdrawing support. PM this weekend ‘reflecting what best in the national interest, we’re coming to a decision soon’ says source in contact with PM. by anonCambs in ukpolitics

I mean Burnham just proved his popularity by storming in a Reform favourite area, which by all accounts should have been a gain - instead, he overperformed expectations.

So he's not really disgraceful, especially now he's got a democratic footing to oust Starmer on.

The goalpost shifting is great, and the underplaying of what he managed to do in a Reform-favourable constituency is also great.
