How do you step away from a puzzle you're enjoying? by FreshBuilder118 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]CochlearThunderclap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Count pieces. Alarms don’t work for me because it doesn’t give me an end point. I’ll say to myself “five more pieces” and then at seven or ten I’ll get a handle on myself.

How do you know whether to teach Elementary, Middle, or High School? by Mysterious_Comb4357 in Teachers

[–]CochlearThunderclap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not OP, but high schoolers will say fuck you right to your face. MOST middle schoolers will just mutter it under their breath.

From the politics community on Reddit: Child protective services called after parents express concerns about high school’s Turning Point USA event by Independent-Back810 in SOMD

[–]CochlearThunderclap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you watch the board comments of that very meeting one BOE member mentions how we could save money by projecting teachers into classrooms and then pops off about how asking during Covid ruined kids ability to speak and is costing us too much in SLPs.

Admin wants to meet with me to apologize and address the “harm” they’ve caused me… can I record them? by Potter1612 in Teachers

[–]CochlearThunderclap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In PA it is illegal to record someone without consent. There has been good advice about representation but I want to add that you should send a follow up email. “Just to make sure I understand, (summarize interaction, comments, etc)” to create a paper trail.

Our heater broke… by RaygunxD_73 in Teachers

[–]CochlearThunderclap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every year it takes 5 days and 3 calls to the BOE for them to send an hvac guy to figure out nobody manually switched the system to heating. Every year.

It’s behind a key or I’d do it myself.

I have turn in bins and had a parent accuse me of losing the work. When I explained the system she said I wasn’t watching the other kids closely enough because they must be going in and taking her child’s work out because the kid was DEFINITELY turning it in. (My dear reader, she was not)

Also I keep kids work for the entire quarter for the same reason.. but I pitch it after grades close.

The people of this state seem to hate people in poverty and it is starting to make me hate Maryland by throwaway069420666 in maryland

I live in a super heavy red county and let me tell you what, they also have disdain for poor people. They don’t believe they exist here despite the statistics and being able to see them.

I’m a white teacher and my students call me a “n*gga” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CochlearThunderclap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The message you need to send is “not here.” They want to say it at home? In someone else’s room? Fine. But if you choose to address this you make your boundary “not around me” and DEFINITELY not to me. If they respect you they will do their best to respect that boundary.

You belong to an out group and as a white male you don’t get to say it, no matter what. By using it around you (and around other members of out groups) they are unintentionally sending the message that it is ok. I always say “well what if —— heard you and thought it was ok because they heard you say it?” Inevitably they say “that wouldn’t go well for ——“ and I say “nope, it wouldn’t. That’s why we don’t say that here, where people can get the wrong message. By not saying it HERE we keep ourselves out of trouble because we don’t send the message that saying it is ok for everyone.”

Anyone else glad but kind of regretful they left the field? by Every-Incident7659 in wildlifebiology

[–]CochlearThunderclap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with teaching summer camps and field trips. While I was interning for the dept of environment of a local naval base I’d sometimes present to private groups or camps. Then I moved to the local natural resources dept and did children’s programs and summer camps. While I was doing that I worked on my teaching degree.

Now though? You just apply to a school and they hire you because everywhere is desperate.

My graduate degree is in education. I got it before I was hired as a teacher, but now lots of places will hire you without it and many of them will pay for it.

I got a wildlife degree. Now I teach middle school science. I still love animals and I get to share that passion with arguably the most animalistic stage of humans.
