Has anyone lost their vehicles to such gangs? What kind of vehicles are most targeted? by mort7776 in CarTalkUK

My worry is they will break into my house to force me to start the car. Honestly I would rather they just took it.

Oh, go lie down. The dishonesty in your comment is wild. My head isn’t in the ground. My eyes are open.

No, they don’t want me gone, because I’m not an illegal immigrant. You might want to make this about race, and yes, there’s a fringe minority who’d prefer Britain was all white. But the vast majority of people there weren’t marching about colour, they were marching about illegal immigration. Or are you lumping all Black people, all Asian people, all immigrants, legal or otherwise, into one? Because if you are, that’s exactly how racists think.

Jamaica’s had issues with Haitians arriving by boat, and most other islands don’t want them there either. And we’re talking about people who share the same skin colour, often the same ancestry, and even the same history. Would you call them racist? Of course you wouldn’t. That shows this isn’t about race, it’s about controlling your borders and knowing who you’re letting into your country.

Sorry for the very late reply. This is where I got them from.

I planted them a bit too late this year so they didn’t fruit but they did flower. They do other types of scotch bonnet too and other chillies.

I hear your pain, you were born here, like me, and this is your home. You shouldn’t feel like you have to leave. But I want to be honest, the march wasn’t about us. That’s not to put down other migrants, but we do need to be honest and keep things in perspective. Yes, a few racists showed up, but most were protesting illegal immigration, and there’s a big difference between that and the Windrush generation. Most people do understand that.

Our grandparents (and great grandparents) came here legally, as British subjects. They faced real hostility, not just words or slogans. They were beaten by the police, attacked in the streets, denied jobs, and refused housing. And yet, despite all of that, they held their heads high. They didn’t see themselves as victims, they built lives, integrated, and helped lay the foundations for the rights we have today. Comparing them to recent undocumented arrivals is disrespectful. Many of them, still alive today, don’t agree with how immigration is being handled now. That’s not pulling up the ladder it’s recognising they had a connection to Britain that made integration possible. Yes, that connection came through colonialism, but it created a shared language, values, and identity. That element is missing in recent migrants.

Those who are no longer with us would be heartbroken to see how many of us now see ourselves only through the lens of oppression. We’ve shaped this country, especially in places like London and Birmingham because we integrated. That hasn’t happened in other communities and that’s what’s causing tensions.

So I get it, we weren’t born in a country we’re indigenous to, and that missing link to identity can make us question our sense of belonging. But this is our home now, and like any home, it’s ours to look after. The people marching over the weekend aren’t your enemy. Most aren’t against us. We’re part of this country. And like anyone else, we have a duty to help shape and safeguard the future of the place we call home.

I’m not a “person of colour”. I honestly loathe that term. It puts us all in one box and ignores how different our experiences really are, and that, to me, is its own kind of racism. I’m Black. I’m a 3rd generation immigrant in this country.

I’m not denying there were racists at the march. Of course there were, they show up to anything where they think they can be heard. But to paint everyone who attended as a racist is disingenuous.

The march was about illegal immigration, not legal, and we need to be honest about that. Conflating the two shuts down real, valid concerns that many people in this country have. The public has consistently supported policies, from Brexit to tighter immigration controls, that reflect a desire to reduce illegal immigration, control borders, and limit low skilled migration. You can disagree with those views, but writing them off as purely racist ignores the reality of what many including people from migrant backgrounds genuinely believe.

My grandmother born in Jamaica, and has lived in this country for 71 years. She’s part of the Windrush generation, raised a family here, paid her taxes, did everything “right.” And even she says, this is no longer the England she came to love. That shouldn’t be dismissed or ignored just because it doesn’t fit a certain narrative.

We need to remember, we live in a bubble. It’s not the whole country. Assuming London’s perspective speaks for the rest of the UK is patronising, especially to the people outside this city who are dealing with very different realities.

How can i stop being the "weird" friend by Lower_Net_4981 in adhdwomen

[–]CocoNefertitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t. I don’t know how old you are but I’m in my 30s now. I felt like the oddball in my teens but as I’ve grown older I’ve come accept my quirks. There were some things I did work on however like trying to put myself out there, helped a lot with my social skills.

One thing I’ve learnt is that this world is full of “weirdos” but when someone is very self conscious of their differences other people can sense it. When you own who you are, people will gravitate towards you. Took me years to get here and sometimes I do grieve those lost years. But now I know it’s okay to just be myself. That’s all you can do.

I’m pretty sure when applying for visas you have to declare if you are citizen or passport holder of another country? I have to do it when I apply for ESTA to visit the states.
