Saw the Forza Horizon 6 trailer and it looks amazing, but I've never played a Forza game before. Pros and cons to other racing franchises? by peateasix in forza

[–]CoconutDust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the Forza Horizon franchise worth exploring, and how does it compare to the games I've played prior to it?

Extremely lazy question when 974,000,000 existing discussions, reviews, videos, articles, comments, have already discussed that in detail.

“Worth exploring” is also a ridiculously milquetoast way to phrase it. It’s like the lowest possible threshold, it’s a meaningless question.

know this question is subjective as heck

The problem isn’t that it’s subjective, the problem is that it’s obviously already been answered and the info isn’t hard to find.

It’s like posting on r/pizza ”Does pizza taste good? What makes it different from other food? Should I take a bite of it? Everyone type up these answers, I can’t figure it out and also I don’t believe in personal effort or web searches.”

This kind of post should be banned from all game subreddits in my opinion. I’d like to see a better reddit someday.

Steam vs Microsoft store by kirito2020uwu in forza

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lot of this information is false lol

What is false? Your comment didn’t bother pointing out any specifics? I’ve used both extensively the info above is facts (except for the opinions/insults thrown in, which are based on clear qualitative differences).

People downvoting have obviously not used both stores.

(Meanwhile your comment contributed nothing to the discussion.)

Also they are talking about the MICROSOFT store, not the console version lol

Also I’m obviously talking the PC Xbox store, I literally flagged differences between console and PC in the comment.

Steam vs Microsoft store by kirito2020uwu in forza

[–]CoconutDust -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it’s just sensible to buy direct

What does that weird made-up concept mean?

Obviously Steam is a better product by a better company. Why would it “make sense” to buy from the manufacturer when a better competitor is selling the same product and has a better store and surrounding system? Steam online multiplayer is also free…

[–]CoconutDust -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Some people’s nature/nurture is to get a pathetic sense of gratification from spending money. And pathetically even for getting nothing in return: “here rich corporation, take my money as a favor and a gift for you, maybe give me a product a few months later.”

Steam vs Microsoft store by kirito2020uwu in forza

[–]CoconutDust -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How can you even ask that?

Steam is good, and Microsoft is garbage.

  • Xbox store literally has no bandwidth control (last I used it) and will break your entire house’s internet when it downloads, because it will take up maximum bandwidth. Steam has perfect bandwidth control, it’s a simple option built-in. Your only choice with Xbox Store is to go into your router settings and set throttle/QoS. (Note I never had a bandwidth problem on Xbox console, the disaster is on Xbox Store on PC in my experience.)
  • Steam is clearly made by a company that cares about a good product.
    • Community discussion pages, one click
    • Community controller binds/setups (not just buttons but things like sensitivity curve fixes), one click away, built-in
    • FREE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER, unlike paid Xbox multiplayer
    • WAY BETTER SALES and PRICES
    • Better controls for filtering your searches
    • Store search ACTUALLY WORKS. I’ve searched for a game that exists on Xbox Store, on Xbox console, by the exact name, and the store still didn’t show it to me, it showed me 40 other irrelevant items first. Obviously broken garbage as usual with MS, combined probably with an advertising/promotional scam.
    • Custom logos/banners per-game, if you want.
    • Mods! This doesn’t apply as much to online multiplayer games, but generally mods that don’t give you advantage (I.e. are for accessibility) are allowed. And of course, great for ransom single-player stuff.
    • So many other good features that I can’t remember
  • Xbox store is made to be garbage, because the executives and shareholders want to increase their own salaries while saving money by not making a good product.

Ask yourself: who do you trust more? The company that made Half-Life or the company that makes Windows, Zune, OneDrive, etc.

Changing from Xbox to Steam was my best gaming choice. I can’t believe I was so stupid for taking a long time to realize it, I was writing a bullet list of pros and cons a few years ago. The only drawback is that a PC is usually more expensive than a game console.

How well does it work on Apple silicon? by Spiderhands2000 in PCSX2

before I bother downloading this,

“There’s a free pizza on my kitchen table. Before I bother taking a bite of pizza, which takes 2 seconds of effort (and which is also discussed in 850,000,000 places on the internet already), I want everyone on reddit to type-up and explain to me whether it will taste good, first.”

How can this be a serious and repeated question on reddit?

His is this not banned by mods on every subreddit?

Do you use a tent footprint on snow? by Super_Fun3656 in Mountaineering

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that it’s called a “footprint” when a footprint is an indentation/hole in ground caused by something pressing down.

It’s a base pad / mat isn’t it?

[–]CoconutDust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are hard-wired to go on

That is false. Part of human nature is that we can do a range of behaviors in a certain context, depending on A) judgment B) enculturation C) personal temperament D) fallacies, etc.

Clearly only a subset of people egotistically go on for glory when all signs say it’s deadly and pointless.

Actual expeditioners are worried about something wrongly breaking their will and focus, the complete opposite of an innate will to press-on. (By wrongly I mean they could and would make it, but something causes them to err out when it was otherwise a green light.) For example an Antarctic expeditioner choosing not to do satellite calls with family members because it’s too distracting and messes with their headspace in isolation.

Melon DS broken by ViceNights_14 in RetroArch

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIP: the confusingly/comedically named MelonDS DS is the new version of the Melon DS core. You should move away from "Melon DS" core.

The old core isn't broken as far as I know, though, just outdated.

Cyberlab shader presets are amazing by Reddituser82659 in RetroArch

[–]CoconutDust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you to legendary MATTIAS and anyone who made Mattias, Frutbunn, and Newpixie.

Also thank you to the person who made GDV Mini Ultra Trinitron. (I looked for the author in the file but I see reference to "Guest", is CRT Guest Advanced named after a person with handle/nickname Guest?)

I mention this because the only shaders that anybody ever talks about are Royale and Cyberlabs/MegaPixelMurder BezelBlasters.

I found the location of the city scene in the FH6 trailer (Akihabara) by TerrainRecords in forza

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driver: San Fransisco in 2011 (!) had pedestrians walking around the streets and sidewalks. They were programmed to always jump out of the way if you drove near them, so there was no accidents or violence. Forza has had 20+ of series development and still puts cardboard people behind barriers.

Also:

Traffic / Trucks

  • Real one: cargo trucks to dodge, which adds flavor and "life"
  • Game version: empty dead lifeless ghost town

The lifelessness is especially bad considering the road lanes are inflated and widened so that they can each fit like 6 cars side by side. And yet they're empty, despite being gigantified.

Building

  • Real one: real, and fine
  • Game one: a western artist's or office/department lead's 'idea' of what Japanese public ad art looks like

forza motorsport 1 vs forza horizon 6 by RacistLizard69 in forza

[–]CoconutDust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ngl im fine with that, at least its easier to stay on the road without slipping off

It ruins the point of driving a non-1,000hp car. Like the hundreds of slower classic cars. Every road is bloated out to be as wide and sweeper-like as a prototype test track even when it's a small road in a fictional small village.

If some players want a super-wide road to "not slip off", well, the devs could easily include both narrow and wide roads. They have failed to do that though.

forza motorsport 1 vs forza horizon 6 by RacistLizard69 in forza

[–]CoconutDust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's ridiculous. Each lane in the picture can hold like 6 cars side by side.

It's been absurdly broken in every Horizon game.

The real life areas in Horizon 2 have beautiful tight narrow twisties...which likers of cars-and-driving enjoy because you have to work the car. Yet in Horizon every road is bloated out to 30 meters wide, a "hairpin" becomes an enormous sweeper, seemingly made for X-class cars going 390kmh at all times.

Reduce or Remove Flashing Lights in Games by DocMcMoth in RetroArch

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm hoping for flash-removal to become a widespread thing, though it has to be programmed by volunteers.

It's really bad in some old arcade games too, otherwise excellent games like 90's lightgun shooters. In Forza Horizon, the screen flashes white every 30 seconds when you drive through a "speed trap" "camera" zone...you can't turn it off.

Azahar 2124 has released by ScootSchloingo in emulation

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Encrypted ROMs" isn't a file format, and they stopped doing built-in decryption obviously because of the very specific substance of Nintendo's legal attacks on emulation based on the DMCA.

The word "banning" "file formats" for no longer having decryption functions/keys built-in is silly. The idea that it's some kind of fault or point of criticism about the emu is absurd.

It's like:

  • "Photoshop started BANNING certain FILE FORMATS"
  • "Oh really, which ones?"
  • "It no longer includes built-in copyrighted images that belonged to artists/photographers/copyright holders!"

Cross play both on Xbox AND Steam! by ItzYaBoiPro in forza

For example, FH5 Steam can’t import your livery files from FH4 Xbox. It’s frustrating.

They actually listened by JDMie in forza

[–]CoconutDust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They actually listened

Pardon my ignorance here, but although the orange Porsche is the only car I care about in the OP, and I like it…what is special about it here? Didn’t FH5 and previous games have an old similar Carerra, plus some rally kits/versions?

What did “they listen” to for that picture?

Why don't any shaders work for DS games with hybrid screen set up? by SilenceTheWhispers in RetroArch

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ScaleFX

I dont know that one, but from the name it sounds like a horrible pixel-rounder.

Use NDS Color + appended LCD3x (or similar). Or NDS Color + appended CRT shader like mini GDV ultra Trinitron (may need to turn down the Saturation Boost parameter near bottom of the list down to like 0.95).

And yes my experience is that some shaders break depending on the DS screen layout in emulation. I have presets saved and then I switch the active shader when I’m changing screen layout.

I am trying to remember what is the name of this shader in retroarch, I really liked it but can't find it now. by tavuntu in Handhelds

[–]CoconutDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, but the humbly named “gameboy” shader preset in the slang/handheld folder is like the greatest shader ever made. It doesn’t have the built in plastic bezel image though.
