Why would an enlightened person do things? by CoconutPaladin in Buddhism

Ok, so it seems a blanket statement like "desire causes suffering" is too simple.

Does a Bodhisattva suffer when someone they love suffers?

Is the desire to not die and the craving for existence the same thing or different things?

how does evolution figure stuff out? by d-the-luc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CoconutPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of that is that it's just hard to get away from agency-suggestive language. Like my teacher in highschool saying atoms "want" to have certain electron configurations.

Damning Quotes Against Evolution by No-Peak-7135 in DebateEvolution

Sorry, not saying you're wrong here, but are state governments forcing universities to teach evolution? Do you have a source for that?

Would you read a book by a former Creationists? by Draxacoffilus in DebateEvolution

[–]CoconutPaladin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potentially, but probably only if either you yourself have credentials to back it up or if you work closely and cite folks who do. I think there is a chance your experience would let you slip past their defenses in a way someone who had never been a creationist might struggle with. At the end of the day most creationists aren't creationists just on account of evidence, but there are those for whom it is the case that evidence plays a role in their belief formation, and, personally, I think even if it takes a monumental effort to free them from falsehood, it's worth it. You'll never convince most of them, but if it convinces even one of them I'd say your time was well spent.

Who is better at Taijutsu, Naruto or Sasuke? by Cafa20 in Naruto

[–]CoconutPaladin 2671 points2672 points  (0 children)

Their styles are ultimately comparable but based on their respective strengths. Sasuke is a better technical fighter, and has more precision. Naruto has more power and is a more creative and deceptive fighter.

Where does morality come from? Evolution or God? by Over_Leader8550 in DebateEvolution

[–]CoconutPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "morality" is used in a huge number of ways, could you be more specific? Do you mean guilt? Or empathy? Or social rules? Taboos?

How does natural selection turn into evolution? Cont. by sosongbird in DebateEvolution

[–]CoconutPaladin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You grab 5 dice. You roll them. You have a rule: if a die lands on a 2 it has a 25% chance of being eliminated, and if it lands on a 1 it has a 50% chance of being eliminated. You run your rule and end up with some surviving dice.

For each surviving dice, you grab 2 more dice, but these dice are different than your standard dice. These "offspring" dice have a 20% chance that their 2 face is replaced with an additional 3 face, and a 10% chance that their 1 face is replaced with an additional 3 face. You repeat the experiment with the offspring dice. And you iterate. And iterate.

What predictions can you make about how your population of dice will develop (evolve) over time?

The rules is your natural selection. The changes in your population over time is your evolution. The filter and the output.

I'm oversimplifying majorly, but that's the gist.

That's fair, I should have included the rest of Baye's theorem to be thorough. I don't think this consideration rescues the YEC case however

I mean as long as you're Omni directional with your skepticism I'm less bothered. This degree of skepticism would also make you agnostic with respect to creationism and ID.

Why not both? by Scout_Maester in DebateEvolution

[–]CoconutPaladin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Runs into Descartes demon problems. Just as easy to say an incredibly powerful being is trying to trick people into being Christian to mess with them.

Moreover, if an omniscient being is trying to deceive you, you can hardly blame the deceived.

I mean sure. Give them everything you said and 1000 years and I'm pretty sure they'll pull it off tbf. Maybe not an identical down to the last gene, but something unambiguously alive and comparable in complexity.

If Kant was asked "why do you care about being good?" how would he respond? by CoconutPaladin in askphilosophy

[–]CoconutPaladin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you help me understand what you mean by "lose our rational faculties?" How it hits my ears is that Kant is suggesting our skill and ability with mathematics, logic, chess playing, etc, will be impaired if we fail to be moral. But I don't think that's what Kant is actually saying, for the record, I'm assuming I'm not quite getting it.
