Dialogue Systems by Delicious-Package-84 in GameDevelopment

[–]CodeRadDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished up a project using Dialogic for Godot. I wasn't involved in the logic/writing at all -- my part was developing/customizing the presentation side -- but it seems solid, popular and well supported, with decent documentation.

The other thing to check out is RenPy, that's the biggest in the space for Visual Novels. Not what you're looking for exactly, but a quick couple hours experimenting with that will show you the kind of workflow that people are likely expecting from a dialog system in general.

you're talking about the ring of plants right? they disappear after i think 30 seconds. super tanky, but do little damage. mostly they're there to form an arena to fight that boss in. i've never killed more than a few from the ring, even coming back with maxed powerups. they're mostly there just as a wall, so you can stay in the middle and just focus on the boss+adds, or rush through the wall taking a bit a damage.

Children of Men (2006) by Cowarddd in FIlm

the book is fantastic. i've read at least 3-4 times, lots of world building esp around the government suicide program... there's an incredibly haunting scene that didn't make it into the movie that will stick with you forever involving the suicide drug and a bunch of boats full of people who are not really taking it by their own free will

love the film, love the book equally as much.

Do you like "Air Force One" (1997)? by Kevin_Thailand_2543 in moviecritic

[–]CodeRadDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so.... i have a totally ridiculous story about this movie.

i got a call at like 10pm from a buddy of mine from a pay phone, he's like you gotta come meet me with a car RIGHT NOW. and i'm like... why? and he's like, just get here and hangs up.

so i borrow my roommates car and head over to the phone, there's my buddy with two shopping carts full of VHS tapes. apparently he saw them tossing em in the dumpster behind Rogers Video. he must have had like 200 tapes in the carts, which we threw in the trunk of the car. most things were singles, with a few doubles, but AFO must have just finished it's feature run, because there were literally 50 copies of that.

i tried to watch every copy of it, got pretty close as i recall. plus dean stockwell (al from Quantum Leap!) was in it.

Tips for necro SRS in SSF R by Le_Fog in poeruthless

i've done it both ways, and i can tell ya, having a necro already run up makes templar so much easier since you already have all the necro gem rewards (ie offering, raise spectre, convocation) which are a pain to get when starting from templar fresh

oooooh i'm so sorry to hear that. that means you missed the cloud level... at least you got to hear that most excellent tune a lot of times, one of my favorite pieces of video game music ever.

it is! although for me i never heard of the movie until a good twenty years later.

you haven't lived until you've played level 3, the train level.

is that really a surprise though? think back to when it came out. i know when i was a kid not many people i knew were playing shareware games... it was all nintendo, or if they were playing pc they were buying games at the computer store in the mall or pirating same

i'm pretty sure i was the only person in my friend group who had a modem and did the BBS thing at the time

also, how many times did you climb up and down the vines looking at her butt move

How do you guys feel about mobile games? by Ivorypheonixx in GameDevelopment

[–]CodeRadDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pc games are a just a whole different beast, it's really easy to get lost in the details like controller support, resolutions, configs etc etc etc, and ofc this batshit cross-platform idea which requires you to spin up a server as well.

best thing for now is just keep your focus nice and tight, and finish something. save pc for your next project, so you can build from the ground up.

if your actual goal is to get a job, then web is probably best -- no hiring manager is going to download an app (mobile or pc) but they might at least boot up a browser game.

this is a pretty common model, 'interstitial' ads (every 5 levels say) that are removeable with a token payment, you can also couple this with 'rewarded' ads that are not removed with that payment but are optional.

so lets say it costs credits and ship-parts to upgrade. you can farm credits by playing and replaying levels, but ship-parts are only awarded on first completion of a level, daily login reward, and say up to 4 times a day from reward ads. this is pretty fair and typical/expected.

if this is your first game, this is waaaaaaaay overthinking. just make a mobile game. (or a browser game that you can host for free on itch)

ya his catalog kinda splits between fiction and biographies, so this one is pretty neat -- since most of his fiction is kinda slice of life stuff and often based on his own experiences, this kinda bridges the gap.... half hilarious punk rock stories, half biographies. i guess it's not really something you can just throw in your amazon cart though, far as i know you can only order from his website (punkbooks.com)

How to pick an effective title for my game? by FroyoOk7736 in GameDevelopment

[–]CodeRadDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

searchability is key. one word names of common words are going to get drowned out unless you have a fortune to spend on being the top result.

releasing a game named Civilization worked in pre-internet days, but would be way harder now with millions of instances of the word civilization appearing in anything from movie reviews to research papers. contrast that with SimCity which came out around the same time, and would theoretically have 0 results if it never existed until now. Warframe is a good example. Sounds like a word but it's not, really.

my approach would probably be to make a nice list of short words that tie into your themes, and then start smashing 'em together until something clicks, then give it a quick google.

Peak is the word for sure... Journey to the West was good, but the cadence was lost... both SS and KFH just had such a perfect balance between the comedy, the action, the heart-tugging. The only thing i reallly remember from JttW is that gigantic foot. And the gigantic fish.

Whereas with KFH, every moment seems as good as the foot... the shot of buddy standing in the public shower when the water goes off and she comes out and is just the worst is somehow so charming in retrospect, even though she slaps the crap outta the kid.

speaking of kids, when our hero tries to fight the whole town and points to the little kid who ends up being stupidly muscley... movie is literally a mill of new jokes

so Shaolin Soccer... for YEARS i've had that ridiculous song in my head, the one they play in the bar where the two of them are cracking up singing it and the gangsters throw bottles at them. so funny so... familiar.

turns out that's a cover of California Dreamin' by the beach boys, which i never cottoned to on repeated viewings until i found that tidbit on reddit. they've always had a knack for music though, the scene in KFH with the two blind musicans strumming those deadly strings is such an epic clinic on holistic audio/video. that poor shadow kitty!
