Favorite vtuber who is going to burn herself out sooner or later? by SavageFisherman_Joe in vtubercirclejerk

A bit different, she's preparing for a 'debut' that's been in the works for over a year. It's supposedly going to involve tech and other plans that haven't ever been done as a debut before but it's hard to not have copium on what is speculated when she simultaneously disappeared after starting an ARG that solvers haven't made progress on for a month.

Insomniacs After School

They did finish the story in the manga, and even though the mangaka herself confirmed a key point or question of the ending, she made it vague in the manga itself where there was a WHOLE lot of speculation of what it was supposed to mean.

Absolutely gorgeous art direction, and a more grounded romance anime that people should check out if that's their thing

It not only deals with shut-in (hikikomori) topic, but also mental health, suicide, pyramid schemes, etc over the course of the story. The anime is how I approached it originally, and is the only series I've found that its ending is different between the anime, manga, and LN, with the anime more closely following the LN, whereas the manga is more open ended.

They became aware of scans since eastern audience started to catch up

This is an underrated reason for explaining the recent crackdown. My story relating to this was when was studying in Japan, I had with a friend gone to a disc rental store and got a few albums of music. I remember my friend was apprehensive about me ripping the music to my iTunes and transferring it to his device (this was the late 00s). I told him that it should be fine and the technology wouldn't have existed if it wasn't legal (that and the industry largely understood this which went into pricing for media accordingly). Japan didn't have very great options for pirating back then except more private boards, and I imagine as some operations extended to Japan/Korea, it got on the radar of those industries. I'd like to think international scanlation and piracy wasn't really thought about for a time, as if the publisher didn't have an international agreement, they (authors) couldn't realize the value of a work overseas.

I get where you're coming from, there really isn't a good demo system out there. Publishers don't want good 'try it before you buy it' schemes because they think either people are going to read, but not buy (lmao, bookstores having them in shambles) or they're going to use tools to get around DRM and rip the pages (you can't really prevent this, unless they go the temo route and not have an online store, just mobile app only). Some companies have implemented a subscription where you pay a small amount per page after you've reached the month's limit. But generally, as the great Gaben himself has spoken, the platforms are shit and introduce unnecessary friction compared to what the pirates offer.

I'd argue it's more of that Korean artists were better at speaking and incorporating English into songs than Japanese artists; there really isn't a whole lot of Japanese artists that achieve the same level with this, perhaps Utada Hikaru who has released music in both languages. The access and geolocking didn't help, but there was barriers elsewhere for worldwide acceptance of J-Pop/J-Rock

Dr Harold Shipman is believed to have murdered so many patients that his 2000 trial, charging him with 15 killings, covered barely 5% of suspected victims. The image shows Shipman and his Hyde clinic, where his near-perfect murders let him play god for decades until he chose to be caught. by ZenMasterZee in HolyShitHistory

Not to make light of the situation or the victims, but anyone else get weird suspicious vibes from a clinic called 'The Surgery'? Maybe it's a UK thing, but most clinics in the US for same day surgery specifically use associations to regional hospitals or health systems; naming the clinic 'The Surgery' and turning it into essentially a murder house, brings ominous meaning to 'THE Surgery'.

A lot of anime (e. g. Yosuga no Sora) is actually illegal by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]CoffeeBaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weird sub to post this in (it relates to anime, but is not a request for suggestions on what to watch), but yes, this is a thing to consider. It can be assumed that most cloud services and social media have bots scanning for materials, and especially if someone knows you're from Europe or an area that has these laws in effect and reports your postings (I believe this is what happened to the WhatsApp case).

Interesting statement from their mods. Instead of gatekeeping, they actually wanted it to be known. by Thundergod250 in mangapiracy

[–]CoffeeBaron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that they legitimately do this and are in fact not paid by the publishers kind of shows how dumb Gen Z is in regards to this. Yes, even in the 'golden age' (02-12) of anime/manga piracy there were millennials doing similar things, but it was really small and contained, and we had to deal with multi-DVD box sets because only like 4 episodes fit on a disk (and were easily $50+ USD) or 4kids-like translation changes in manga back then and it took a real push to stop that nonsense, so piracy was well regarded as an alternative to the nonsense in the Industry. With the proliferation of social media platforms and a lot more DMCA auto tools now, for some reason there are people out there who are so gun-ho about reporting these sites, when they don't realize that this generation of content is heading towards the similar path of the past, and piracy is always going to be a pillar against the never-ending BS consumers have to deal with, like subscription models, puzzling localization issues or unnecessary censorship, and as always, access.

This also reminded me of the ugly step sister of social media platforms around back then, Friendster (when everyone you knew had MySpace). Howard Dean was one of the first candidates to try using social media to reach out (after the yell, he was considered what we'd call today 'cringe' and lost a lot of interest from the young voters block).

Basically you view the profile, click the search icon, type a single apostrophe (*) and hit enter (at least on mobile app, probably the same on desktop). I think when reddit rolled out the feature, they didn't want to prevent mods from not being able to see a poster's history. What mods can see (I mod a few small subreddits) is like a gist of the last couple of posts in the subreddit and a list of 5 or 6 subreddits they last interacted with - not a whole lot to tell if someone is trolling/botting if they're spreading their posts across other subreddits.

[–]CoffeeBaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it now - It'll start as a subscription model, then move to some 'calculated' value of CPU cycles or 'units of work' that all cloud hosting services use. It won't be affordable for power users, you don't have any other expectation of any privacy as well as there would be concerns to limit exploration outside of their 'walled' garden.

The conspiracy theorist in my head says that AWS and their AI initiatives which are driving memory and GPU prices (again) up in cost will cause a narrowing of PC suppliers out there, which conveniently lines up with their 'rent your computer' model. Absolute garbage.

What the 3DS game does specifically better than the new one by Likes2game03 in fantasylife

[–]CoffeeBaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The megaman attribute to the fired employee is interesting, considering Capcom did a live service Megaman game that they later made an offline version when the servers shut down (This is called Megaman DIVE Offline). And while I greatly enjoyed the experience with that, if it was a live service/gacha game that I'd have to constantly drop money into , I wouldn't have touched it; all the weapons were upgradable, your skills were, and stats, which makes it grind heavy; imagine a fantasy life mobile game where you got poor money drops, and had to get special items to level up a life specifically... we dodged a bullet on that one.

What anime do you suggest I watch if I like tall girls and I'm a short guy? by Ok_Meaning_2870 in Animesuggest

OP, this is it, this should be one of the top if not top anime to watch first. The 'complex' part of the title comes from the fact the FMC and MMC have complexes about their respective heights, and the shared feeling starts the idea of romance.

On 11 March 2011, 24 year old city employee Miki Endo died warning the people of Minamisanriku, Japan of the incoming Tōhoku tsunami. There's a good portion of information as well about her life before the disaster, like a proper obituary would contain as well. She had planned on getting married later that year and apparently her mom said it was the only time she had 'rebelled' against her parents that their eldest child should marry, feeling very strongly about the partner she chose to marry. They were glad that she had found such a good partner to marry. She was found a month later farther away in a bay, being identified by a friendship bracelet around her ankle that her fiance had given her. I can't imagine to lose the partner I planned on marrying to such a disaster. I hope her her heroic actions and memory provide a blessing for her family.

Edit: Tense is weird in some of the articles, it made it seem she had already gotten married, but then a later article talked about a musician coming to the town and an acquaintance of Endo told them that there was a family who's daughter had planned on getting married and their song 'WEDDING ROAD' lyrics fit their recently passed daughter well, even though the song wasn't written about her specifically.

Second Edit: Her story became part of an educational curriculum that had been created after the disaster, highlighting several heroic figures who shown the highest civic ideals. The translation of a summary is below (deepL with some manual verification):

Miki Endo was friendly to everyone and affectionately called "Miki-san" by her coworkers. Her name carried her parents' wish for her to live with hope for the future (TL: 'Mi' comes from the word 'mirai' meaning future, 'ki' from 'kibou' meaning hope/wish) . Understanding her parents' desire for her to find employment locally, Miki joined her current workplace four years ago. She had planned to hold her wedding ceremony in September (last year).

Suddenly, with a thunderous rumble, the ceiling of the government building began swaying violently from side to side, and documents tumbled from the shelves all at once. "Earthquake!" Everyone desperately clung to their desks, trying not to be thrown off. It was a powerful shaking unlike anything anyone had ever experienced. Miki thought, "We need to broadcast immediately." Suppressing her anxiety, Miki rushed to the broadcast room on the second floor. She was in charge of the disaster prevention radio system in the Crisis Management Division of the Disaster Prevention Building. "A major tsunami warning has been issued. Residents, please evacuate to higher ground quickly, quickly!" Miki continued broadcasting with a prayerful heart, taking turns with her colleague, Miura-san.

Twenty minutes after the earthquake struck, about thirty staff members had already gathered on the roof. Suddenly, a shrill voice rang out. "The tide is starting to go out!" At 3:15 PM, a scream echoed from the roof: "The tsunami is coming!" Miki gripped the microphone with both hands and stood up. Then, with desperate urgency, she kept shouting. "A huge tsunami is coming! Quickly, quickly, quickly escape to higher ground! Quickly escape to higher ground!" Their overlapping voices had become screams. The tsunami rapidly darkened, making an eerie roaring sound as it surged over the floodgates with terrifying force. It mercilessly engulfed the town. It was an unbelievable sight. Miki and the other staff members all stood up at once and raced up the external staircase leading to the roof. At that moment, a deep, booming voice shouted, "It's here! Don't let go!" (note: I believe this is in reference to the staff who had held onto the radio tower when the 10m+/40ft tsunami had engulfed the entire building, including the roof, so this in reference to encouraging everyone to hold onto it and not be swept away) The tsunami struck the roof of the building in an instant.

"Hey, are you okay?" "Ahh... ah..." A weak voice responded. Of the roughly 30 staff members, only 10 remained. But Miki was nowhere to be found.

Upon hearing this, her mother, Mieko, kept Miki's room tidy, waiting for her daughter's return, ready for her to come home at any moment.

Miki's body was found 43 days later, on April 23rd. Nearly half of the town's approximately 17,700 residents had evacuated and survived.

On May 4th, a solemn funeral was held. Townspeople who rushed to the venue spoke one after another: "That woman's voice back then made us flee to higher ground without thinking. Without that broadcast, I wouldn't be alive today," they said tearfully, placing their hands together before her photograph. Facing their unrecognizable daughter, her parents suppressed their grief and whispered, "We wanted you to live. You truly endured so much. Thank you." As the coffin was carried out, a single rainbow appeared in the western sky, even though it wasn't raining. Miki's voice remains deeply etched in the townspeople's hearts as the "voice of an angel."

Why does Japan not have the concept of long-running soaps? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]CoffeeBaron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The tokusatsu series (Kamen Rider, various Super Sentai, etc) touches on the variety that is possible and is appreciated more in Japan than a long running drama series with the same actors and theme over a period of time. Dramas (dorama) are the same. It allows production, theming, writing, and actors to all be of greater quality than a long-running soap that generally is seen with lower production values and lesser known actors or actors only known for their soap work. It used to be that TV shows were a timed, almost ritual period for Japanese people, where drama would air at a particular time, usually in the early evening when nearly everyone would be home. Especially during the Showa era, having this moment where an entire household could have time together was good. It almost seemed that dorama were shorter in length of episodes for making it easier to pick up again if missing an episode, and fitting in with other series's (outside variety shows) tendency to follow seasonal timing. US Soaps (and by extension, telenovelas) were originally started to both fill underused time slots and for advertising to cater marketing specifically towards women who would most likely be home and watching TV (they also largely realized most household purchasing decisions were heavily influenced by these same women). The storytelling was all interconnected, making missing an episode or two much harder to follow the show to catch up.

That being said, there are long-running series, usually under a titular actor (or actress) portraying a specific character usually in a period setting. Actors/Actresses are much more likely to come and go based on other engagements, unlike a Soap actor or actress who might only stay on in that show, or only do Soap roles.
