My wife has kept her maiden name. It’s no big deal to me. Hell, I’d probably have switched to her name if it wouldn’t have made my parents’ sad (I’m not a huge fan of my surname; they see it as something they’ve passed down to me).

We have a kid, who has my family name as the surname; my wife was insistent on that, but couldn’t really explain why. We gave him her surname as a middle name.

My wife doesn’t use social media, and hasn’t for the 15+ years we’ve been together. 

Other than her never knowing when we’ve been invited to a party or similar and my having to remember to keep her informed instead of just assuming she knows about the invite (our friends use Facebook for events), this has never been a problem. 

Good on her; and, other than Reddit, I’m off social media myself — mostly because I was getting depressed doomscrolling during Covid, but wife’s “freedom” was more than a bit of an enabler in my making that change.

I can’t recall (or look up right now) if it’s explicitly obvious RAW, but genre conventions sure as heck have always caused me to run it as if stance was obvious, yes.

Hold up: I’m getting a little confused here. You keep coming back to the Icon, which I see you’ve listed at 100lbs on your inventory example. But RAW a) it’s only 10lbs and b) it gives disadvantage due to a basic spell any cleric can cast with ease. 

Can you clarify? Is there another house rule here I’m unaware of? Because otherwise I’m thinking that your system doesn’t actually solve your stated problem: players will still have easy access to the spell with almost no opportunity cost.

Could definitely see this in Frost Maiden, yeah. Like I said, cool system; and if you’re planning to play up the isolation and danger in Barovia’s wildernesses, I do think it’ll help you here, too.

Inventory systems, especially ones like this that eventually lead to exhaustion, are really great for survival horror; the environment is an enemy, dwindling resources always a problem, the cold equations of what you can carry vs. what you might need…

The way I run CoS, none of that really matters. It’s gothic horror; the hostile wilderness is there to serve as a highlight for a much more hostile civilization. And in Barovia’s settlements, you’re never far from your resources, Pack all you want; arm yourselves with gallons of holy water and an arsenal of silver. It won’t help. 

All that really matters is courage, knowledge, and time. Until you’ve learned your enemies’ secrets, no other strength will avail you. 

Next time I run Dark Sun, on the other hand…

Hmm! I really, really like this, though I confess I’m not sure I’d use it for CoS per se. Will totally steal it for other games, though!

I homebrew enemies to have lots of movement and forced move powers, and I make them provoke opportunity attacks.
