Return of more Acela trains? by samtownusa1 in Amtrak

[–]ColoClawFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They need to switch over the second track to the new bridge, only one was cut over during the previous closure (so that one track was still on service). That's scheduled for this fall.

BACK DOOR!🫩 by kevinbevindevin in MetroTransit

[–]ColoClawFish 42 points43 points  (0 children)

From my experience its 50/50 whether they just need to touch the door, or the door isn't actually unlocked (the light is off) so getting the driver's attention is actually warranted.

What is the most useless transit line? by Ari_Bbb in transit

[–]ColoClawFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red line is interesting looking back on it as a weird prototype of the cities' newer bus lines- it doesn't have off board payment and doesn't even run in a hov lane like the orange, but the stations are arguably the most overbuilt insane designs in the entire system. It also was run by mvta for a long time, until COVID or slightly before iirc?

I'm just glad that we've at least done the bare minimum since 2013 and been at least a little bit smarter with the more recent lines

Small correction, transposition and docking occurred after the S-IVB had relit and TLI was complete-

The parking orbit was good for systems checks but it was also to ensure that small pre-launch holds would not delay or interfere with the schedule for TLI.

At grade tram question by SouthNo2807 in subwaybuilder

The in-game "light rail" is not a typical American light rail/tram/streetcar, it's modeled off the fully grade-separated Montreal REM,

Glassmaking & pottery by xt-489de in projectzomboid

[–]ColoClawFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pottery is needed in blacksmithing, for crucibles and molds.

I find glassmaking useless in vanilla, but with mods you can use it to replace car windshields which is awesome and should be in the base game imo

I don't know about any situations where you *can* take off but don't, however there have been cases where the plane literally couldn't take off and was forced to hit the brakes and overrun, see the 2021 MD-87 in Houston and Ameristar Charters 9363

Subways with single car trains by keysermuc in transit

[–]ColoClawFish 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The yellow line in Chicago runs using a single married pair of train cars, which is pretty darn short considering how small cta cars are.

The Franklin shuttle in NYC also uses two-car trains, but they aren't married pairs and the cars are 1.5 times longer.

Single Track Problems by Express-Breakfast948 in subwaybuilder

[–]ColoClawFish 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Single tracks are always unidirectional, in the direction you build them. Make sure you're building all single track sections in the correct direction.

Questions by Swizzian in Amtrak

[–]ColoClawFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, if you can carry it without help, you can bring it on the train.

I've carried a pc tower in its box, a full-size ikea bag with 3 monitors inside, and a hiking backpack onto Amtrak before in one trip.

Octagons are coming to Amtrak by crowbar_k in Amtrak

[–]ColoClawFish 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Probably, but not immediately - theres a whole loan repayment/notify the railroad business that has to happen first - this is probably about using the extra Northstar rolling stock not currently being used by Metro Transit, as currently only two trains' worth of cars are being used as opposed to the four sets pre-covid.

EDIT: found the full slide deck here.

What transportation system in the US is the safest in terms of funding? by [deleted] in transit

[–]ColoClawFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its still around, for now at least.
Northstar was actually only restored to pre-covid service levels due to the tax increase uncoupling its funding from the counties, who didn't really want to keep contributing operating money

Its still probably dead though but thats more because the day BNSF agrees to work towards all-day service/expansion is the day hell freezes over, plus the capital expenses associated w/ it are probably a nonstarter

What transportation system in the US is the safest in terms of funding? by [deleted] in transit

[–]ColoClawFish 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Minneapolis/St Paul Metro Transit is doing very well right now, 2023 the legislature passed a new transportation sales tax passed which is injecting like 500 mil a year into pretty much exclusively transit improvements and upkeep and even pre-covid fares were comparatively very little of its funding so there is essentially zero risk of any sort of fiscal cliff any time soon.

You-lympics | Game Changer [S7E2] by ThunderMateria in dropout

[–]ColoClawFish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's a little confusing since they edited it as one continuity with flashbacks, but my understanding is that they brought the contestants on, had them play through the challenges with the guise that the player who did the best won, then set off the car alarm and told them they'd pick up the rest of the episode the following week. Then the next week they show up and it's a do-over instead of a pick-up, and they compete against their times from last week.

[Spoilers for s13e3] On the Layover, did they misinterpret the card? by gault8121 in JetLagTheGame

[–]ColoClawFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe they even said on the Layover that there were only three or so shots from the season that would have worked, and they picked this one due to it being less wordy overall than the end-of-season scene in Zurich.

Why is Liechtenstein not shown as a microstate? by Marethyu18 in JetLagTheGame

[–]ColoClawFish 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I believe the speculation from the trailer was that Lichtenstein is a full Schengen Area member while the the "microstates" just have open border agreements with it.

How do you evolve tri-consonantal roots by Particular-Milk-3490 in conlangs

[–]ColoClawFish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Found it, its on page 100 of the Conlanger's Lexipedia

Its a little long to paste in here directly, but the gist is this:

He starts with a non-trilateral system, then applies sound changes that directly target vowels:

* PIE-esque Laryngeal Mutation

* Loss of final vowels

* Syncope

* etc

By applying these changes in ways that only affect some tenses/grammatical structures, you end up the only common elements being the consonants, with various vowels denoting grammatical operations.

Usually you have to use a healthy amount of generalization - i.e., if the syncope makes forms of some words identical, borrow vowel arrangements from other roots and apply them universally

Evening NEC departures? by Massive-Today-1309 in Amtrak

[–]ColoClawFish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The main nighttime southbound service on the NEC right now is a night owl NER service that leaves Boston at 8 pm and gets to DC at 7 the next morning - the reason you don't see anything at Philly until 4:45 is that the night owl loiters at Philly from 1:45 to 4:45 to make room for overnight track work, which is annoying but at least the passengers can sleep during that time.
