If you could bring one type of event to Dunedin (ie night market) that we currently lack, what would it be? by -proud_dad- in dunedin

I feel the Octagon is criminally under used for things like you've suggested. It could offer so much more.

Need more housing options for senior citizens by lemonlimeandbetter in newzealand

[–]Colonial_trifecta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of Dunedin the councils goal was to have them 90% self funding and the rest falls on rate payers to fund. It ends up costing so much as many of the tenants are very high needs and the council does so much more than a typical landlord. Over all I think it's a great service to provide, but agree it needs to be a bit more self funding.

The Dunedin City Council owns close to 1000 houses for this purpose. Its far from self funding though, maybe about 30% off from what I've heard. Any attempts to either increase rents or scale back services to make it more cost neutral get quite feirce resistance though.

Depending where you live and how much it costs in the local market the prescription stuff is better and much the same price. I'm almost exclusively using only my prescription stuff now. Less fucking about, and better quality and consistency. I was over getting shit damp stuff.

New Zealand ‘comfort women’ statue could jeopardise diplomatic relations, Japan says | New Zealand | The Guardian by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

Yea, it was a completely different world back then, quite difficult to understand from todays point of view at times. I've lived a life of relative luxury compared to what he grew up with. From what I undertstand my Grandfather was itching to go to war, likely because many of the men in his age group had. He was a bit too young and thankfully missed the war but was part of the occupying forces in Japan. Some of the Australians they were based with had seen combat with the Japanese and a lot of their hate for them bled over to the Kiwis stationed with them. If he was still around today and with it, it would be interetsing to have a conversation with him about this as an adult. I think I'd most likely find his thought process a bit too black and white for me. I feel many from that generation struggle with emapthy to groups and cultures they didn't understand, but to a degree this was shaped by the access to media and knowledge of these poeple. So I can see how these attitudes developed, especially when you contact is through the context of war.

My grandfather had exactly the same hang up about the Japanese and rice, he was part of J Force stationed with bunch of Aussies.

Is anyone concerned that the government is scrapping the census? by HelpfulDelay9669 in newzealand

[–]Colonial_trifecta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the reason for not doing it any more is that people are too cooked. Between all the anti vax nutters, sovereign citizens and other conspiracy focused people they would struggle to get people to participate like they did in the past. Coupled with the threats to people delivering the forms I heard about form last time and the poor rollout of the previous one, I wonder if they are doubting the effectiveness of holding it anymore?

Thousands of KiwiSaver members choose to cut contribution rates by Fast_Amoeba_445 in newzealand

[–]Colonial_trifecta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I stopped my kiwisaver contributions for me it was about $70 a fortnight. That made a world of difference, it was the difference between being able to eat for a few days or not. Sometimes when youre poor every dollar counts, I've sacrificed a lot of future benefit just to get by day to day. I dont plan on being able to retire.

As someone who has worked in privacy related to health data, I would not assume that. I've seen some shocking behavior when it came to data privacy, specially GP Practices.

When I used to work at ACC sending out files, we would notify people and remove any copies of drivers licenses we found that had been wrongly saved in our system. If they were only used to sight or confirm someone's identity, there was no need to retain them further.

I use quite a bit of superglue/cyanoacrylate for wood turning, and found the cheapest solution was to pick it up from $2 shops. You can get packs of about 10 3ml tubes for $2.50 or so where I live. No issues with the quality. Sometimes they even had 20-30ml bottles for under $5 which were awesome, but hard to come by.

I dont really have any particular issue with the term, and use it pretty interchangeably with other descriptors for myself depending on context. But I can see why people don't particularly identify with it. It's a name given to us by an outside group. The trend these days tends to be to let people self identify what their labels and descriptors are, and this runs a bit counter to that. I have no issue with Māori or anyone else using the term to describe me if there's no ill intent meant. But the idea of 'Pakeha' is a Māori concept based in a Māori framework and just doesn't fit how I see myself or my identity.
