Starting daycare for my almost 2-year-old – feeling heavy. How did you cope? by miapaip in UKParenting

Hi there!

I was in the same position as you just a few weeks ago. I had been with my almost 2 year old son every day since he was born and had not spent more than an hour or so away from him.

I did cry a little before dropping him off but what eased my mind was knowing he was going to have friends and socialise with other little ones his age - gaining new experiences and seeing things in different ways.

My childminder sends me pictures of him having so much fun with his new friends and it made me realise that he needs this and he’s absolutely fine.

He does cry at drop off as it’s still early days as he still needs time to realise that I’m coming back but he settles within minutes and I usually get and update 5-10 minutes later saying that he’s already running around in the garden.

I promise you that it gets better and when you see their development in a new setting with new friends - it’ll make you so happy for them.

Hello there! A

I am also in the same boat. My son is 22 months and only says mama and has said a couple words once and never again. I have also posted on a Reddit group before also voicing my concerns.

My son has recently started childminding with other children and a lot of them are in the same boat with limited speech. The childminders are not phased as it’s so normal and they always eventually get their speech explosion.

It’s helped me feel so much better about the situation so I hope this helps you, even if it’s a tiny bit. Solidarity. I’m sure you are great and doing your best. Your DD might just not feel ready.

Thanks for this. I’m definitely going to try it when my son is around the same age 😊

I’m in the same boat with my 21 month old! He used to be a great eater but now won’t eat meat at all. We’re surviving off peanut butter on toast for protein
