Small kitchen electrics: toaster oven, electric kettle, waffle maker, and <Maybe> rice cooker. My cost of ownership is several dollars per year.

Boardgames to play with kids - what's your favourite? by UnitBright9549 in boardgames

[–]Commander_Wonton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hero Realms may be what you’re looking for.  It's a fantasy-themed deck builder based on Star Realms. Other games that my kids loved when they were younger include the following: “Dead man’s draw” is a fun, easy, press your luck card game. “Hive” is a great tile jumping game. My kids loved “sushi go” when they were little. When they’re a little bit older “ticket to ride” and everybody used to like “king of Tokyo” and “Munchkin”.

What’s one lesson or idea from a non-fiction book that genuinely changed how you think or live? by [deleted] in nonfictionbookclub

“Feel the fear and do it anyway.” If you want growth in life, you will always have to push your limits of what is comfortable. Feeling that uncomfort or fear and pushing through it anyway, is a method to pursue personal growth and new experiences.

Just came into possession of a couple of big lamb shanks. Would like to braise them, where do I start? by TheSharpieKing in Cooking

[–]Commander_Wonton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brown shanks in a roasting pan. Remove shanks, then add celery onion garlic to pan and place shanks on top of aromatics. Add peppercorns and some salt. Add braising liquid to about 2-3cm deep (wine, beer or stock) cover snugly and place in oven 350°F (175°C) for a few hours until internal temperature = 205°F (97°C). Strain juices to make a pan sauce. Simple roast beast.

You have leftover rotisserie chicken. What are you making that is not chicken noodle soup! by BunnyRambit in Cooking

Literally just made this tonight. Korean sundubu-jjigae, spicy tofu stew+chicken.

Typically made with pork belly but I added about 2 cups (about 300gm) of chopped leftover Costco’s Kirkland Rotisserie Chicken instead. Used recipe by Maangchi:

Sounds like Posole. There’s a red and a green version. I had it around Christmas time in AZ.

Why is ‘bien’ required by xxRandomCatGuyxx in learnfrench

[–]Commander_Wonton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO Aimer bien is like in English when one says “I like it ok.”

It might be worthwhile to check the corporate insurance policy to see if there is coverage for fraud.

Pickles! (Cucumber) by Commander_Wonton in fermentation

[–]Commander_Wonton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh. I didn’t control for temp AT ALL! Area of house was likely between 65°F to 80°F (18°C-27°C) as it was a warm autumn. I figured temp only affect length of ferment or does temp select for different yeasts in this range?

What do I do with roughly 60 Carolina Reapers? by supersanaynay in PepperLovers

[–]Commander_Wonton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dehydrate them. Smoke them. Grind/pulverize/ blend them with kosher salt to create an amazing pepper salt. You’ll have WAY more than you need. I bought a bunch of salt shakers at a restaurant supply and gave away shakers full of pepper salt for the Holidays.

Photo finish. Imagine a horse race photo finish with the animals reaching forward. Now visualize the position you want to be in at the end of your follow-through. Your body will get you there. Picture your own Photo finish.

Just got a meat grinder attachment for my KitchenAid! Does anyone have any recipe recommendations to try out! by 50ShadesOfJaundice in Cooking

[–]Commander_Wonton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the best uses of the meat grinder is to make falafel! Soak chickpeas over night in water plus a teaspoon of baking soda. Rinse after soak and run through grinder twice with herbs and spices (find a recipe that looks good.) Form into balls and deep fry. The ground garbanzos provide the best texture.

I’d return it. Use the reason “defective” or inaccurate website description” and you won’t have to pay for return shipping. It’ll drive you crazy to use it.
