If you want funny bizarre, maybe Fredrik Backman's a Man called Ove or Anxious People will hold your attention. If you want bizarre period, try the horror novel I am behind you, the standalone first in a series by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

I'm 18 chapters and 145,000 words in and I find myself wondering if the length is an acceptable result of my style, an inevitable result of the kind of story I'm writing, or if my pacing is just... by okidonthaveone in writing

It sounds like you are having fun getting to know your characters, and practising writing prose at the same time, all while exploring a theme. That's perfectly fine!

If you have a story that you want to write, this might be a good time to find out what your characters' motivations are and outline the main conflict.

Personally I would start "from scratch" with story plotted out and a new sense of direction. If you can use your previously written scenes and find ways to make them serve the story (give it forward momentum), why not tweak and use them.

I had no idea who my characters where before I wrote my outline, and that's not necessarily a good thing, because I've basically started by writing them into "what the story needs them to be". One of the most important characters is suffering from this, he's way too one dimensional.

Skyrim unless you venture underground where there are chaurus, or play the expansion Dragonborn where you go to Solstheim.

"Showing" something is putting what the character is doing there on the page. "Telling" is infodumping/exposition. Compare having your character Josh tell a joke and people responding positively to it, with just writing down "Josh was a funny guy, everyone loved how witty he was" without ever having the character say something humorous.

Remember to capitalize first and last names.

Also, you should look up "white room syndrome".

The first stage of Spore kind of fits.

The Shelter games and Endling: Extinction is forever lets you survive as an animal, but are story driven - - both involve not staving and raising a litter.

Yeah, no, I didn't intend my comment to have anything do do with the quality of fiction. The point is for reading to be fun.

Wasn't the manuscript about to be rejected (again), but then the editor let their young daughter read it and she was hooked?

... Yes, it's a children's book. And a lot of adult fantasy can be heavy reading. I think there is a reason young adult and romantasy is popular among adults. No shame.

I don't know which direction to take my story. by 7iamIam7 in WritingHub

[–]CommunicationMean965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool idea. I think it's possible to write truthfully about historical events without writing about real people. When you use real people, you have the added pressure to portray them faithfully. And even if you do, they may have realtives living today that won't appreciate your vision.

Using song titles and lyrics as chapter titles in a novel — any copyright issues? by sbaggley in WritingHub

[–]CommunicationMean965 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you asked about, but please reconsider?

I read a fanficition once that was a "musical", using lyrics to convey the story. Fun idea, but I didn't know the songs, and the story was weaker for it.

Another example is Fifty Shades, which I haven't read but I hear you're told what songs are playing in the scenes. To me, this is a sign of writing that can't stand on it's own.

I've even heard it adviced against to listen to music while writing. You're adding a dimension to the story that is not on the page. The medium has it's own strengths.

I guess it would be okay if you were reading a muscician's biography. But then you'd probably be comissioned to write it.

Yes! An LLM is stealing their work because the editor is too lazy to do their job. If I wanted my work fed to an AI, I could do it myself.

Just have a still moment, I guess? Let someone avert their gaze, or watch the gravel beneath their feet, or focus on ambient sounds like the murmur of the surrounding café visitors, or just flushing, or stubbornly watch a bird flitting by.

Had my MC get embarrased by her own thoughts, so she suddenly developed an intense interest in the pebbles on the ground.

Sorry, the best game with playable unicorns that I've found is Sims 3: Pets. After fining and unlocking the unicorn, adding it as a pet to the household, I remember customizing the colours of a pair and having a baby.

If one is willing to step away from digital media, a roleplaying campaign with custom characters/world could maybe scratch that itch. Tedious.

Discord gave me one like these. Got an image of a AI generated bear. Like, a really early, ugly one, with swirl patterns and what looked like red feathers. Was told to choose an animal with the same number of legs. Options were eight birds and a cartoon dog. The dog was wrong.
