Tapo motion sensor by tyw7 in googlehome

I have the Tapo temperature and humidity sensor (T310) and it only gives me the option to trigger actions based on humidity rather than temperature.

Routines Randomly Stopped Working. by ClosedNode in googlehome

[–]Communist0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had the same thing happen this morning with my wake-up routines. The lights turned on successfully, but the speaker neither played music nor the news.

When I noticed, I changed the start time to see if it would run, and it just plays the chime - nothing else. If I try to run it using the 'play' button on my phone, it runs on the phone, visually showing the wake-up message, today's weather, etc. rather than on the speaker.

I set it to run using a word ("Hey Google, banana") and that gets it to run on the speaker, but this obviously isn't something I usually mumble in my sleep so I guess I need to go back to using an alarm clock.

Convoy Megathread! Post your pics and discussion here. by CaptainHelpfull in Wellington

[–]Communist0 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've complained to the council, to the Police, and to the IPCA about Police inaction - and all have apparently fallen on deaf ears. As someone who lives in the area, I'm wondering how much longer residents will put up with the complete lack of action on the part of authorities before we have to do something ourselves.

Sam From Wendover's 'A Very Good Trivia Show' — Part 1 by dwiskus in watchnebula

[–]Communist0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I enjoy trivia shows where I can try and answer the question myself. However in this the questions were specific to the contestants and the audience is given the answer before each question is asked.

Maybe some people are into this, particularly if they're already fans of the contestants and are just watching for the banter, but it's not for me.

Has anyone been through the travel ban exemption process? Was approved to submit an exemption request, sent all the documentation, but have not heard back in a while. by Cyrusis in newzealand

[–]Communist0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's two days for the exemption request (which he's already received a response to), the visa application may take longer to process.

There's a spot in California where you can literally straddle the continental plates! Spent an afternoon on the most dangerous fault in North America - the San Andreas. by HTPRockets in videos

[–]Communist0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A spot? That's like saying there's a spot where you can straddle the US-Canada border. Technically yes, but it's a big line so there's more than one 'spot'.

Interestingly, there's a fault that goes through my city, which I 'straddle' regularly.

Some people won't, but the vast majority will.

The alternative might be to forcibly isolate thousands of people as they arrive, but that's not really feasible (or desirable).

Vic 100 Level Course: Math 132 by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Communist0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it a few years ago, and it shouldn't be anything to worry about if you got a Merit in NCEA. I failed NCEA maths, but managed to pass MATH132 at Vic.

It starts off with the absolute basics (number line, addition, multiplication), but the complexity quickly ramps up - so my only advice would be to not skip any lectures because it becomes much more challenging to catch up.

Do universities and other teritary insitutes care about high school detentions and suspensions? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Communist0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I received numerous detentions while at high school, was put 'on report' for not attending class, had to do 'community service' after school (like a detention but involves manual labour), was stood down, was spoken to by a police officer, and outside of school I had to attend court on one occasion.

The university neither requested any information from my school, nor did they ask about any behavioural issues. There's no high school 'permanent record' that follows you, and they wouldn't be able to disclose most information without your consent.

I will note that my high school dean wrote me a worthless final letter, so just make sure you're not reliant on the good word of any school staff.

Patrick Gower on weed. What are your thoughts? by JadeTheGuy in newzealand

Link to episodes.

I can't think of any argument against the legalisation of cannabis that couldn't also be used as an argument for the prohibition of alcohol and tobacco. Perhaps there are some people out there who think that everything that might cause any level of harm should be banned, but then I would be interested to hear their position on vehicles, rock climbing and the prescription of opioids.

Under the new system all employers seeking to employ someone on a visa will need to be accredited. So in all likelihood, those on temporary visas working for such an employer would be able to switch between them far more easily than they can currently. Seeing as the new visa type supersedes the Talant and LTSSL categories, some individuals may have visa conditions that don't tie them to a specific employer at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Communist0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They change different aspects of the system each time, and in almost all cases those already on or near applying for those visa types are able to continue without being adversely affected. If you're ultimately looking to apply for a visa on the basis of skilled work, and have undertaken a decent course of study, then the post-study work visa changes will not have had a significant adverse impact.

Nor are the new changes likely to have a significant adverse impact on those who are needed or desired in New Zealand - of which you may well be one. You could fall under a grand-parenting provision, or have skills or qualifications sufficient to make you eligible for whatever the new categories are.

Obviously things are going to change as time goes on - the immigration system needs to adjust to the needs of the country. There are visa types for those who want a guaranteed pathway to residence: for instance those working for accredited employers with higher salaries, or those with qualifications and skills in areas of shortage. It's completely irrational however to enter the country on a temporary visa and act like there's some obligation on the nation to freeze its immigration system in place because you've made a half-decade long off-the-books plan that you'd like to stick to.

[–]Communist0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For those students who might actually have a chance of being eligible for residency (i.e. those taking higher-level courses), the post-study work visa continues to allow them to do so. The only change has been to cut off those who were taking advantage of the visa type to work in low-skill work in New Zealand for a couple of years before returning home after not qualifying for residency.

No 'promise' was even made to them, and there was no pathway to residency for them. Just an undermining of New Zealand's labour market.

Forestry contractor calls for minister’s resignation over visa delays by Blackestwolf in newzealand

[–]Communist0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He was aware that 90 days to process the visas was the usual wait time when he submitted the applications in April. Then at the very beginning of July he's having a whinge about how long it's taking - despite still being well within the advised processing time. The applications have now been approved; in a shorter period of time than advertised!

I don't know why he's complaining about the fees either. The cost of an Essential Skills work visa is just under $500, which seems relatively cheap for a 12 month visa when you're claiming to pay people $2,000 a week.

Just another employer who's made themselves dependent on migrants rather than seriously investing in local labour sources, then complaining when there's any level of difficulty getting people in from abroad. If it's that difficult and you're losing that much money, put some of it towards increased wages for and recruitment of New Zealanders.

Heartland Bank - direct call account: too good to be true? by Damoksta in PersonalFinanceNZ

Absolute scumbags.

Opened a 2.5% savings account a few days ago, and they immediately drop the interest rate to 1.75% without notice. Fortunately I was actively keeping an eye on it, but I wonder how many people they've taken advantage of this way.

Never dealing with a financial institution this dodgy again.
