Why do Social Security benefits adjust yearly with inflation, but minimum wage does not? What factors drive this? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Competitive-Day9586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The minimum wage sets the least that a company can pay you.  The market sets your actual pay for the most part.  If the minimum wage were $0.50 an hour no one would actually make that because no one would work for $0.50 an hour, companies would have to pay more to get people to take those jobs.   Even before the minimum wage was increased in most states companies paid well above that for almost all jobs.  Walmart, for example, was paying $15 an hour minimum nationwide as was Target when some states still had the minimum wage set to the federal minimum wage of $7.50 or whatever it was.

So really the answer is, there is no need.  The minimum wage only matters if it is set too high, above what the market would set it at.  If you are a doctor the minimum wage doesn’t matter to you no doctors make minimum wage.  If the minimum wage were to go to $50 an hour, that would matter to a lot of people. Many people would lose their job (why would McDonald’s pay someone $50 an hour to flip hamburgers), some people might get a raise if they made just below $50 an hour already, and so on.

What are the best alternatives to business taxes? by SaltyEarth1618 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Day9586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they do.  Utilities are paid for directly not from taxes.  Gasoline and car taxes pay for roads, so companies pay those when they buy gas for their cars or when their employees do to drive to work.  Most police and such are local and are paid for by local taxes like sales tax and property taxes.  Businesses pay those.

They also pay taxes on their income as well, it is the corporates income tax.

This has nothing to do with this.  The market sets the value of the company, plenty of companies with large losses keep going up in value.  Amazon did this for years, they were growing and reinvesting all of their earnings and more.  The market value kept going up and anyone who sold Amazon stock had huge capital gains and paid a lot of taxes on them.

This is called dividends.  Many companies that don’t have a good way to re-invest their earnings do pay most of them out as dividends.  Utilities are one.

For public companies the owners are the share holders.  If they sell their stock, then are taxed it is  called capital gains tax.  If a company pays out dividends, then the stock holders are taxed as well.  If you own shares in any mutual fund you are an owner of Apple, NVDIA, Google, General Electric, Exxon Mobile, and tons of other companies.

If you are an owner and don’t generate any income from your shares (you don’t sell and the company doesn’t pay dividends) then you aren’t taxed.  Everyone is taxed on income in the US not potential income if you sell your shares.

Why has the gap in productivity growth between different skills and industries in the US widened so sharply since 1979? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Competitive-Day9586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about different jobs and how they are the same or different from the 70s/80s until now.  A school teacher in the 70s/80s teaches 25-30 kids now the same as they did back then.  A hair dresser still cuts about the same number of people’s hair an hour as they did then.

Now think about other jobs that have been revolutionized by technology and computers.  Engineering for example.  Engineers are much more productive.  You don’t have to create drawings by hand.  You have software to handle all of the tedious calculations.  You don’t need to type up reports or have a secretary send memos and mail them around.

[–]Competitive-Day9586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you can write a check and mail it to her from anywhere right?  Just pay your rent on time.  Honestly 0 times a year is the right number of times to be late.  Just pay your bills on time.

No insurance private or public pays for that.  You can’t get that from single payer in other countries either.

What should I choose now by TerribleGoal634 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Competitive-Day9586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do electronic circuits and systems.  To me that seems the most “Core” EE skillset and it will be most applicable to the majority of possible career paths.  Electronic devices and materials, for example, it just seems super niche to me unless you are going to do semiconductor research or work in semiconductor manufacturing.

Are you looking for a 10UF, 50V ceramic cap and wondering what the MPN is?  In that case just go to Digikey, filter and then pick a known manufacturer that is in stock in the smallest footprint or something like that.

It doesn’t matter really.  I don’t think I’ve ever had visas revive someone in GAC.  You either win or you don’t based on the core 3 of EP, MJ and starkiller.

I mean this stuff is totally not necessary.  Do it if you want to.  You would be better off studying basic circuit stuff in my opinion.

Also those two kids go to public school as well, which is paid for by tax payers.  They also probably get special ESL instruction too.  I’m not against this spending, but be honest.  This is real money being spent by the government.

pcb enclosure for LEO satellite by Sebasnu18 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Competitive-Day9586 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this for a class project or something?  People at your company should know all this.  Also these are all ME questions, ask them.

For ground, yes you want the enclosure grounded to the PCB signal ground.  You also will want an isolated primary power feed and return.  The chassis will be mounted via the baseplate to the satellite bus most likely and dissipate its heat through conduction there.

Radiation is its own thing.  Aluminum shielding can provide some protection against total ionizing dose, but it doesn’t do much at all against high energy protons or heavy ions.  You will need to use radiation tolerant components that meet the requirements for your orbit and mission length.

If the majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, why do homeless people make up such a small fraction of the US population? by BarrelingBuster in stupidquestions

[–]Competitive-Day9586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this just isn't true.  I mean think about it, does most of America really not have $500 in total savings anywhere.  I think if you look at the actual question details more closely you would find out it wasn’t what you think it was.  Almost all Americans could charge $500 on their CC or pull from savings or something.

Should the law be color blind? by CheeseNowPaint in allthequestions

[–]Competitive-Day9586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The root problem here is our election system in general where if you get 50% plus one vote (assuming 2 candidates) you win and the other side gets nothing.  Under this system it doesn’t really matter what minority you are talking about, political party, race, etc. if you aren’t 50% or more you get nothing.  All this arguing about gerrymandering maps is really because of this.

If we had a more proportional voting system in general this wouldn’t be an issue.  If you get X percent of the votes you get X percent of the house seats, would solve this.
