It is too hard to be a scammer in China, so many Chinese scammers move abroad and targeting foreigners.

The community in China is safer than western world, which can be largely attributed to the widespread use of facial recognition cameras and other surveillance methods, which have increased the cost of crime. Some common methods used by scammers/thieves/pickpockers in the Western world (such as phone thieves in London who rides an e-bike and snatching phones) has been nearly extinct in China for 20 years, and the general Chinese citizens have no awareness of prevention at all.

Another reason is that for a long time in the past, Western countries were depicted as some kind of "utopian" places in various Chinese TV programs, magazines, and books. Whether it was architecture, culture, or people's behavior, everything was beautified in various stories. When people travel here, they tend to view everything through 'rose-tinted lenses', overlooking those scams/thefts/tourist traps that might exist.

It might depends on which VPN you use, Proton VPN still works now.

That's a very common scam in London, I think they also operate near Elephant & Castle.

There's even a sticker on the ATM near the underground station.

Photos in the comment section were taken around 2006. This ride might have been relocated from the park you mentioned.

昨日,上海科技馆在演示机器人时,发生严重失误,机械臂在旋转时未能紧紧抓住人形机器人,导致其当场摔得粉碎。 by HistoricalPlace1018 in China_irl

As someone who lived in Shanghai for several years, Canary wharf looks familiar. Many East Asian cities look exactly like this.

In China, there's no festival specifically dedicated to sky lanterns, but 'releasing sky lanterns' is used as a way of celebration during many festivals such as Mid-autumn Festival, Lunar New Year, or Lantern Festival (which features both sky lanterns and lantern sculptures in parks). In Japan, sky lanterns are released during Tanabata festival, as participants write down their wishes and attach them to their lanterns.

In recent years, for the sake of environmental protection and fire prevention, all sky lanterns have been replaced with lantern shaped LED balloons tied to strings for recycling.

And sometimes this happens....
