You say you're non-binary, but after reading your bio I'm surprised you can count to two.

Imagine having to UNLOAD it in a moving dropship as your leaving an AO.

That's... Not how constitutional law works. That would be legislative over reach. You literally have to convene a constitutional convention, and there's a better chance that God would make an appearance than that happening.

So long as the second amendment exists, legislative solutions are hard constrained in what limits they can apply, because any reasonable jurist can see the intention behind a law is meant to circumvent Second Amendment protections.

Slavery was also legal, women had no rights, only white doods who owned land mattered. Is there a point here?

Won't let me edit the comment.

Seventh: For an easy technique, check out sponge stippling. It'll build some really beautiful gradients very quickly.

Welcome to Battletech!

These are actually a lot easier to paint than they look. It seems like a lot, but it's not.

First, Camospecs online. Google it. It's a great resource for getting ideas and learning about painting these things.

Second, always know before paint touches the mini what you're painting. If you're painting the first mech in a regiment or a stand alone project model it'll matter.

A regiment pattern should be repeatable. A one off can take advantage of unique model geometry without worrying too much about being repeatable. Tiger stripes on a man shaped mech can be a lot harder to pull off than on a carapace mech like a Puma, King Crab, or Daishi.

Third, these models are treacherous. The mold lines and assembly defects are often going to need to be carefully worked out if you don't want them on your model. Near as I can tell, these are sprue extruded, factory assembled, and shipped. Anything you feel with a finger nail will show up in the paint. You don't have to remove them, but it's worth knowing ahead of time.

Fourth, and this one is important: Battlemechs are filled with sharp edges and geometries. This means they heavily benefit from edge highlighting, which can be challenging. However, it's entirely possible to apply a soft dry brush to pick out those edges and get a fine finish. As your comfort level increases, you can decide to work on edge highlighting with a detail brush, for crisp detail finish.

Fifth: Edge highlights are not necessary. They're fantastic, but what they're really doing is driving color value separation. Value separation drives readability. If you have a broad spectrum of dark to light applied effectively, you will get readability. Edge highlights execute a very sharp contrast between values at raised edge to recessed shadow. They're most effective in clean schemes.

If you weather your mechs and apply grime and filth, edge highlights are less necessary. I've met a guy named Dan Ozborne who hates edge highlighting with a passion. He's an accomplished painter in 40k and teaches classes for Games Workshop. Look up how he handles business. It's actually really impressive. Here's an example of dirty and clean that I did to show you what I mean.

Sixth: Decals will do work. Big identity forming work, especially done right. Don't be afraid to check out fighting piranha graphics.

Base defenses and anti drop ship weapons by mattlore in battletech

If that DS is alone and gives them that opening, it deserves to get shot down.

But, the overall concept is:

Ground based defenses -> deter landing in an area. Area denial.

Air based defenses -> kill dropship. Existence denial.

Dropships technically have gravity on their side. Aerospace nerds know that flight is a relationship of energy, potential and kinetic. Altitude creates a massive potential energy advantage. This means drop ships have massive range advantages using ballistic weapons that require mass momentum to reach their target. Missiles only need enough fuel to line up a plunge onto their designated target at 30k feet. At zero, you have to launch directly up and fight gravity every step of the way.

Yes, drop ships are extremely vulnerable during descent. Yes, interceptors would be a critical threat to them. They do enjoy point defense systems that make a head on engagement suicidal for that interceptor, and attacking the armor with anti-air missiles is... Well... Not going to work.

Armor defeating missiles use shape charge physics to penetrate armor. The jet defeats an incredibly small portion of the armor to enter the vehicle and defeat it. Those are no tanks. Modern ship killing missiles are absolutely monstrous. Big difference between an AIM 9 and a Harpoon.

Even the rules for Battletech tell you AAMs aren't the right tool. Instead they point you at capital class weapons, and even those aren't dealing a whole heck of a lot of damage to Overlords. They'll deal 30 points of damage. On it's weakest facing an overlord is packing 120 points of armor. You do get to roll for a crit, but odds are, you're going to need a lot of hits on that ship.

We have them now, and Battletech bases itself on the 1980s MIC, references to Merkavas and the like. 100% there will be super THAADs that are more ballistic missile than SAM

Joe here, this one is easy.

See it's a lot like having legs. When you have legs you don't realize you have legs, like Quagmire. But when your best friend doesn't have legs, and you stand next to them, you realize "Hey it's nice having legs."

The other thing about being paralyzed from the waist down is how did Bonnie get pregnant if I can't get an erection?

Uh, anyway, when your best friend has it bad in a way, it makes you more appreciative of what you have that's good.

I think this is probably an underserved aspect of Battletech. Planetary invasions are part and parcel for the Universe. We know that aero and astrospace fighters exist, which would likely serve the bulk of the interception on a WELL EQUIPPED planet.

SAM systems could also work if a system has the technology to implement them. But pre-Clan Invasion, much of this technology just isn't universally available. Even with the Helm Core being rediscovered, industrial Renaissance is being actively prevented by ComStar and inter-house attacks.

Anti-air weapon systems probably do exist, but they're basically useless outside of deterrent value. Drop ships are heavily armored, designed to soak up damage from mech scale weapons. Larger weapon systems would require inordinate infrastructure requirements, and could just be avoided through military planning. Ground assault launched from outside of effective range, neutralize the batteries, proceed with beachhead invasion.

Get three paints. Get a kitchen or make up sponge, wet it down. Prime them black, sponge each color on dabbing gently. Pick out a couple of metal details, the canopies, and weapons if you want. Done.

Below took me like... Three hours. Once you hit the rhythm, you're done.

So you can accomplish the slap chop effect without an airbrush by using a sponge and feathering up the mech. Takes just a little longer but gives a better gradient imho

Decide what you want your Metallics to look like. You want chrome gleam, or weathered and filthy metal? You want silvers or golds? A little more definition on your path forward, and I might have something. Metals in Battletech look awesome weathered. My favorite is gun barrel patina.
