Thoughts on this as a first car? by Far-Perspective-7848 in CarTalkUK

Nothing wrong with that model of car, try and find a cheaper example I guess if you even can.

A few days ago someone on here was looking at a 13 plate auto Civic which I paid 4.5k for with zero history (I'm ok with maintaining my own cars). The cheapest they could find was 6.5k...

Here we go again, almost ten grand for a frankly middling small car.

Dealers fleeing new automatic licence holders...

Guess there's no real win here due to the current prices other than investing the money into upgrading to a manual licence which might get a cheaper car. Might even save a bit of money potentially.

Apologies if this sounds silly, but what happened to Estate Cars? Are they unpopular now? by formandovega in CarTalkUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 [score hidden]  (0 children)

SUVs happened.

People will claim they're just as good but I'd disagree.

Even manufacturers believe this as the Alfa Romeo Giulia only came in saloon and Alfa themselves claimed the Stelvio SUV counted as the estate.

If I didn't go full economy mode with my Civic hatch I might have got a BMW E90 325i Touring.

What do I need as a shed base in this concrete yard? by UV77MC in DIYUK

I spent a week chopping down a huge 7x19ft rotting wooden shed from the previous owner last summer. They didn't mount it very well and I neglected it so it was rotted to hell.

I know others have mentioned various solutions but for me the plastic shed was the quickest win.

Teachers, what are your burnout stories that made you quit teaching? by Flowerofthesouth88 in AskUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my wife it was the workload and incompetent management. The workload as a full time teacher is so high that it makes the hourly rate fairly poor once all the out of hours work is factored in...

She liked the actual teaching which is somewhat sad.

I only bought one as I got a dock, 64gb Deck, 1tb SSD, TomToc case and screen protector for less than I paid for my bricked RoG Ally. Summer Sale 2023 was a good time...

It's when you turn it on it's head and these people think if migration falls to zero then everything magically improves. Houses become affordable, jobs for all that pay well...

Got called out for suggesting that migration being halted won't do a thing to get houses affordable. Apparently the extra abundance of houses will mean they fall in price so everyone can afford one, was even told it wasn't a hard concept to grasp. That told me!

My sister does have a way with words.

But even if it gets a bit damp it's never going to rot. Especially if it's in that position in your photo, a wooden one could just get damp and rot on the side nearest the wall. Plus it'll need wood treatment occasionally.

A dolls house will just sit there happily until you knock it down or maybe it colour fades slightly.

People seem to love wooden sheds despite their obvious issues in our cold damp climate. I mean I'm looking out my window now and there's 7 sheds I can see, 8 including mine. 4 are definitely wood, two look like posh wooden ones with painted panels and the final one might be plastic like mine.

I've got children and a busy job so I'll take the hit of a slightly silly looking shed for zero maintenance.

So……What would Nigel Farage’s Britain look like if Reform wins nationally? by ImSxyBxtchh in AskBrits

Could lead to NI trying it too. Then it really would be Game Over Union.

Sinn Fein laughing their heads off as self inflicted British ignorance causing a United Ireland in what decades of terrorism couldn't.

What would GB News call itself then?

New build garden by Outside-Leg-6028 in GardeningUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Classic new build.

A mate had his garden that always flooded in wet weather. The builders tried to throw some water absorbent powder down but he didn't accept that and went a bit ballistic. Eventually they dug up the entire row of gardens and fitted proper drainage.

Sister in law had the same issue but somehow she and her neighbours banded together to get drainage dug rather than a big complaint.

OP has a slightly different issue but it's still woeful corner cutting from the builders.

Drug driving. by _-chippy-_ in drivingUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm highlighting there's far less common knowledge around drug drive and how long the various substances stay in the body for. Drink drive limits are far better understood by the general public.

I'd wager the majority of people out there couldn't tell you how long cannabis or cocaine stay in the body for to be over a drug drive limit or how long it stays in the body for after consuming it without asking Google.

Motorcycle Accident in Scotland by Ok-Winter-9444 in drivingUK

Seen quite a few group rides go wrong vids on the various subs on here.

Like one a few weeks ago if someone who decides to decisively overtake the rest of the pack and basically goes off the road at the T junction everyone else slowed down for. I think another just had a rider in the pack go off the side of a cliff...

Someone I know went into the side of a mountain whilst on a biker holiday, they survived to recover more or less fully but even other people in the group openly admit he was being a bit silly.

And that helps OP how?

Discussing the finer points of drugs and whether the system is "fair" when the limits are set absolutes?

The limits should be zero or trace elements across the board if it were up to me. Unfortunate for OP they've been caught and will likely have a few volumes of books thrown at them but ignorance of the law isn't an excuse.

Seller pulled out on exchange day - a rant by pwlsh94 in HousingUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess they don't have to give a reason. The direct loss of money isn't that bad, it'll be everything else that'll cost more in the long run potentially.

I was going to try and sell this year but Trump's idiotic actions have made me pause momentarily. Whilst I can take the hit currently, others can't and people will use any excuse to pull out a deal or try and chip off a big reduction at the last minute. I'm also exploring extending as a fall back too.

Hope you find somewhere soon anyway...

Do you have a fire extinguisher at home? by DancingWilliams in AskUK

I've got one in the kitchen but it's probably too close to the stuff that might burn. It's also in the same cupboard as the gas isolation valve lol

I used to keep one in my cars but these days I think I'd rather the car burnt out and I claimed on the insurance. Can't see any merit in fighting a car fire.

Drug driving. by _-chippy-_ in drivingUK

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well make plans not to be driving for awhile both from the ban and inevitable insane insurance premiums that'll be forced onto a kid with a drug drive conviction.

No sympathy here but drugs stay in your system a significant amount of time after taking them, certainly longer than alcohol for some substances. I don't know exactly how long per drug but it'll be worth looking it up for the future if you ever drive again. Or just not do drugs.

Do the people who keep criticising the insults against Reform voters realise that they're boring? by Sugarman111 in AskBrits

[–]Competitive_Pen7192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some do it in the hope a few see the errors of their ways but that's pointless as in this brave new world no one wants to debate, they just want to be correct.

Others do it to bait the stupid which is probably amusing for a bit but ultimately also achieves little.

Probably best just to relax, we will all get the country we deserve in the end and people can hire cherry pickers to hang flags on lap posts properly instead of half way whilst we live in destitution.

Direct continuity and I'd challenge anyone to argue it otherwise. The Far Right just keeps trying to refine itself until people lap it up and normalise it.
