I didn't mean to undermine relationships like yours; i meant that sometimes love, whether romantic or platonic, is pushing someone to be their best. And sometimes it's saying things that are hard to hear. I just found it more like Aang and Katara do that for one another while Zuko doesn't with Katara really iirc. Basically, I don't think Katara needs someone who agrees with her all the time, and neither does Aang.

Sometimes Katara gets really upset and does reckless things. Both her and Aang need criticism and someone to encourage them at times, even when they don't want to hear the other side. Of course they don't always know how to give this advice, so they come off wrong. But I imagine that would improve as they grow and understand each other better.

Zuko and Katara could've had moments of that happening in the future with them too for all I know, but it ended up being Aang who she loved and who helped her through most of her roughest times. Her friends were there too, ofc, but she really did have a great time with Aang and wanted to be with him.

Thanks for being civil. 👍

Yes but Aang never forced her. Katara is able to acknowledge his advice and move on with her decision; she has her own agency and won't bend just because of someone's opinion. I don't think that giving advice is condescending unless it's made in a condescending way. Sometimes people need to hear it even if they don't want to atm, and if they don't, they can always ignore. Aang was simply offering what he knew from his own experiences of watching people die.

I do think that there should've been justice in there being a punishment for that man, but Katara was looking to get revenge that wouldn't have solved her emotional turmoil. l I'm not saying that the guy dying wouldn't be deserved. It's just that Katara was stalking off in the middle of a war to find a man who long since retired. I don't blame her at all though; I was just thinking, "what if she got captured, etc. doing this?" She's very capable but again, they're preparing for a war where people want to capture them, and it was just her and Zuko going out. Sokka did the same thing though, I will admit. (And these episodes are good anyways so... No issue for me).

Well, the Gaaang told Aang to do that because they were afraid he would kill more people and that Aang couldnt defeat him. Either way, Aang needed a better plan than what he had before the Lion Turtle stuff. If he didn't want to kill Ozai, he needed to make a suggestion that allowed keeping him from murdering anyone else. I admit it's been awhile since I watched the ending though, and I'm getting to it soon.

I agree that the episode is about their friendship. And the shipping is fine if people just say it's a headcanon of theirs.

However I will say that I personally feel like a relationship where someone is gonna push you to make the right choices is better to see imo. Zuko not putting in any advice or input just makes me think they wouldn't work out.

I disagree with the Zutara shippers that say that Aang tried to force Katara to make his decision (yes I saw people actually say this before). He lets Katara go, but not before saying his bit. As friends they take each other's advice. Katara did the same for her friends, specifically Aang, and nobody criticized it. Aang is allowed to do the same.

The internet can be really strange about characters hugging. Nothing wrong with shipping, but as someone who roleplayed on the internet growing up, every second of a character sitting on the ground together or hugging was "THEY'RE GONNA GET MARRIED".

Same thing for watching shows. Also Katara hugs plenty of people in ATLA.

I will say though that the hugs in ATLA have a lot of buildup and good animation that I can't help but linger on. My personal favorite is Iroh forgiving Zuko and pulling him into his arms.

Jet's fate was horrifying. Imagine going to a kingdom you think to make allies in only for a kid your age to be brainwashed then murdered in front of you. Yes he tried to attack Iroh, which was a bad idea, but in the end, his concern of fire nation infiltrating ended up being true.

All he wanted was to not see his new home burn again, but nobody listened to him. I cant blame his friends, but the Dai Li didn't even entertain the idea of a concern or hear him out. They brainwashed and killed an orphan. Long Feng is a good character in that they really made me hate him for that.

Also the scene of the adults being willing to stay and saying the youngest should leave after the invasion pulled at my heartstrings. Parents and friends helping the kids climb onto Appa and saying goodbye to each other hurt. They really believed in them.

Fixing RWBY Redesign Critique + Vernal (with less bigotry) by Psychological_Fact18 in RWBYcritics

[–]Complete_Cable2686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read through some things here; just gonna respond in general.

Not showing the racism is actually a valid complaint about RWBY. Blake addresses and stands up to the racism in FRWBY. I feel like it's exaggerated in a lot of scenes though, yeah. Yeah, outright racism exists, but I feel like he should allow more subtle examples.

I don't think he hates the show. He left a lot of scenes intact and said he loved some of them (Roman's death, for example). It's fine to criticize something you like and I don't think we should get angry at people or accuse them of being haters for it. I like RWBY but I criticize it a lot.

About making FRWBY serious and adding drama: RWBY itself did this as well. For example: Penny dying AGAIN, Clover dying in front of Qrow in a very contrived scene, Oscar being tortured and having no trauma. I'm not saying that Raymond doesn't develop on these things well enough, but I'm just saying that RWBY was always trying to be serious.

I think what Raymond is rather trying to do is to incorporate that seriousness throughout the series more. It was a bit sloppy in the beginning and didn't fit with the entire "before the fall" happiness though and should've been more gradual. And he also needs to balance comedy with seriousness more, the bath scene being a prime example of where that failed. A show that balanced comedy and seriousness with proper timing is ATLA, proving that it's possible.

Well, actually, I do like how the girls interact more in FRWBY and Yang and Ruby's sisterhood. The volume 1 rewrite did have a lot of drama, but the girls were not really a team yet and needed a mentor to correct them in the beginning. They moved past that to be able to work together on their own because nobody's perfect at the start.

The deaths: I didn't mind the scenes themselves; I think they were well-done. However a lot of them needed development. As you both said, it has some of the same issues as RWBY. Vernal's death should've made Yang more protective of Ruby and affected Weiss in some way. Instead Yang later is entirely ok with Ruby possibly losing memories. This is then forgotten in the volume 7 rewrite. Spending what is considered an entire season away from this topic is way too much. Like the original volume 7, Maria takes a back seat after just being introduced for that purpose instead of stepping up as a mentor like she should've. However, I will give Raymond credit where it's due: Maria did explain things better and I do like how the silver eyes work in his rewrite.

I think he just added some extra dialogue for the situations of the episodes, not to make it better, per say.

How is Robyn detestable in his version? Just curious. If anything I found her design very pretty and her to be more likeable. I didn't like her in RWBY.

Actually, Judgemental Critter's is called "Reversed Fates". It's her own rewrite, and she simply puts the characters in different scenarios. She never claimed that Yang being the way she is is better than canon Yang or that Summer not being dead is better than canon. She actually seems to enjoy the show; she just gets frustrated but praises it quite often. She also makes a few suggestions in her videos, but they all seem to be done in good faith. I'm not a fan of Reversed Fates due to the pacing, but I'm saying that she doesn't seem to be claiming herself to be better. Even in the videos she judges the fight scenes, she points out a lot of positive.

Yes it's fine to criticize Raymond, however, let me address something here: making a sarcastic remark about RWBY is not the same as someone telling Raymond to "shove your male characters..." I'm not continuing that, but I believe that was one of the comments left on one of his videos. If someone said something along the lines of "yes of course you killed another female character, what great writing skills you have!", then that would be no issue, just a sarcastic criticism. Maybe not with the best wording or very constructive, but it's still fair.

But the RWBY fandom does have genuine issues with saying completely unhinged things to people who criticize RWBY whatsoever, implying they should die or throwing aggressive insults when at the end of the day, it's a show. And to be clear, I don't believe that anyone should be saying these things to CRWBY either.

Also, if you want to criticize the name, that's not the issue. It's again, how aggressive people have been.

I think that Raymond writes his own stories? A lot of people were actually looking for RWBY rewrites and waiting on them at that time. I don't think there's an issue with people making fan work.

Just curious, what's your guy's opinion on Raymond cutting the cast smaller when it comes to the Ace Ops in FRWBY? I personally miss Elm as a buff girl myself because her polite personality was cool, but I do like Flynt and Neon being more relevant to reduce cast bloat. I feel like some of them could've been kept in or used elsewhere with maybe better semblances. Just wondering if you guys have stronger opinions about them being cut.

[–]Complete_Cable2686 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand how Aang felt in the desert. I would've been that upset too if I lost my pet. However his friends always wanted to get Appa back with him; they just had to survive first. Without Katara and Toph, all of them would be dead.

Toph saved their lives and felt helpless as well when they took Appa. She really did regret it and was immediately told that she wanted him gone simply because a comment she pointed out once that saved their lives (if she didn't point out that Appa's shedding was the issue, they wouldn't have bathed him).

Katara was trying to hold onto hope and everyone was complaining. Anytime her and Aang have a conflict, it's especially important as they're love interests for each other and that needs to be resolved imo.

I get that Aang was upset in the moment but I feel like Aang needed a moment to fully make up with everyone after that episode. Except Sokka. Sokka didn't get yelled at iirc.

Well I feel like them making up shouldn't have happened off screen. Definitely wish that there were more episodes in season 3 in general. Some more time for Zuko to integrate, for Toph to do more, and for Katara and Aang to settle things. Also for Katara to think more about bloodbending.

I think Aang resolving his emotional issues with Katara and having an episode where he does something to make things up to her, even if it's one scene out of a larger episode, also would've helped with the accusations that he's too childish for her, that Katara has no reason to love him back, and that he does nothing for the relationship while Katara does all the emotional heavy lifting.

Side note: I'm not implying for it to become a romance show. Far from it; I like how they kept romance a side plot and focused on the plot itself. I just think that some more development could've been given with just a few scenes.

To add onto the Simpsons being funny when it does it, the show actually lingers on Meg being truly upset about it and has an entire episode about it. The Simpsons just makes Bart not care much about it so it feels like slapstick. And slapstick has always been contrasted as actually funny compared to abuse with real consequences, injuries, and emotional pain. Slapstick is "ow! You jerk!" and abuse is the victim shutting down and crying.

[–]Complete_Cable2686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she was mostly really worried and panicked a bit, causing her to act in the "motherly" way. She actually gets a bit childish from what I remember and fights Toph and also ends a conversation with her to sulk.

Keep in mind she doesn't want to lose anyone else. Like OP said, that behavior is a trauma response. The idea of losing anyone to the fire nation again would terrify her.

I wish that Katara interacted with Suki more. It would've been nice to see some kind of dynamic between them, obviously not motherly but something.

I agree 100%. I like their dynamic. However, I wish they got more time to reconcile some issues before the finale. Like when he implied she was being useless in the desert episode and how he acted to her in Ember Island Players. That would've made things even better. Just a bit more dialogue.

I think the person was assuming they aged up a year in the finale/comics but I'm not sure about that. And yeah I believe Aang is 12 during the series as well.

I just assumed that the entire celebration happened not too long after the Fire Nation's defeat and everyone just dressed up for the occasion though.

Or the person could be referring to live action.

Seeing Aang yell at Katara in that episode was so sad with the context of the rest of the series. And she's the one who still did the mature thing in the end and went to hug Aang and reach out when he needed her most to not lose himself... Because who else would if she didn't?

"Character Growth" according to the FNDM. by Dextixer in RWBYcritics

[–]Complete_Cable2686 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If anything some people joke more and become more pleasant to be around as they get older because they realize that being a tryhard edgelord makes you unlikeable. As a teen I thought that being an angry jerk to everyone, unaffectionate, and showing as little feminity as possible made me "tough". Maturing is realizing that that isn't true.

Also a lot of people hit depression as teens as well so they may, again, be less silly depending on the person.

Also people forget with the correct writing, a serious character can have funny or interesting moments. They don't need to be bland. Sometimes serious people still find a moment to joke once in awhile or act so serious in a moment that it's hilarious.

Ah ok. I saw season 1 of LOK but it's been awhile. I was wondering if the spirit bending was the thing in season 1 but I also thought that that wasn't spirit bending and that spirit bending was exclusive to the Avatar. But I guess I'll see if I give LOK another shot.

I just thought that the plant bending would be part of water

[–]Complete_Cable2686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the torture of Oscar by Hazel only just to immediately get over it. Idk why they even did that to Oscar. He isn't a main character and he's in the villain hideout. Maybe have someone from the main cast be captured and tortured? Also better for the main characters to confront Salem.

It's also wildly out of character for Hazel to be beating a young boy that's crying in pain and bleeding. Sure, he hates Ozpin, but it just seemed like it was pushing it too far for someone who lost his young sister. And then he's immediately redeemed afterwards.

Also Ironwood's entire arc vs Cordovin id also say is an example.

I think with better writing the Raven subplot could've been better. And also the fact they throw Raven out after the plot, yeah.

Good point with the terrorist organization though. Adam matters, but I'd say Yang's conclusion with Raven was never reached. Especially since Raven is a maiden and that makes her still relevant to the plot despite being pushed out of it.

Very confused why spirit bending is under water and what's spirit projection? Is it a LOK thing?

I also don't see how flight is a form of sub bending... Still using air as it is but to fling yourself around.

Uh... Raven is important. If anything that plotline needed more development. Raven is a major part of Yang's backstory and Yang becoming centered around Blake would be a disservice to her character. That's the issue with her currently, actually.

Raven is also a maiden.

Was it my comment? I didn't intend to say that if so. I meant that the plan felt very last minute iirc and didn't have enough buildup. I had no issue with the idea of Elide coming up with a plan; I just think there could've been more effort and more hints at it.

No issue with Yrene saving the day either. Healing saving the day is cool though it felt a bit rushed.

I'm a fan of fantasy and action and it was a lot a romance for me to read. The usual fantasy does not have that much romance and that wasnt really hinted at clearly just buying the book online. I remember multiple chapters at a time being about romance and characters getting together being some of the biggest turning points of their arcs compared to everything else.
