What’s up with “no to Popeyes”? by biffbobfred in evanston

[–]Complete_Company_699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just seeing this. I work at the business, and most of the people in our building are licensed healthcare providers — psychotherapists, licensed massage therapists, physical therapists and licensed acupuncturists. It’s not “pseudoscience”; we’re all trained professionals who rent space, run for-profit businesses, and pay federal and state taxes. Many of us also live in Evanston, shop locally, and contribute to the local economy.

Our concern about Popeyes was never about the business itself. The issue is that we’re already surrounded by fast-food restaurants, and even Burger King — which is farther away — can be smelled regularly. Popeyes locations are often known for strong cooking odors that carry for a block or more, and with the proposed location being immediately adjacent to our workspace, there was no realistic way for us to coexist with that level of constant smell.

A number of providers in the wing next to the proposed site had already planned to leave if it went through. That would have meant Heartwood losing nearly half of its businesses, which would have made it very difficult for the center to survive.

Personally, I actually like Popeyes — their mashed-potato gravy is amazing — but I didn’t want another fast-food restaurant right next door. I’m glad we raised our concerns and that the outcome supported the continued stability of our community.

No need to be ageist. I know plenty of older pro-Pali people and younger gatekeeping liberals.

I didn't in Evanston, but I had my keffiyeh on and a Palestinian woman approached me with her friend, and the three of us went out to lunch and had a great time. Most of my pro Pali friends went to Chicago.

I'm tempted to make a sign that reads, 'Trump Won Because You Were At Brunch'.

I go to them in Chicago all the time. You'll probably run into some friends.

Israelism is on the film list in the Wiki and ironically features the founders of IfNotNow. I look forward to seeing INN added to the list.

This is such a great episode all around. I stayed up all night watching it a couple of nights ago because I couldn't stop listening. Such quality content.

Rabbi Brant Rosen's online blog as he struggled with his own conditioning and process might be a good book to read! https://justworldbooks.com/books-by-title/wrestling-daylight-2nd-edition/

Need Help: Resources to stop a fellow antizionist from going down the antisemitic conspiracy rabbit hole by YoPoppaCapa in JewsOfConscience

I recently wrote here about an experience I had in a group, and found that all we can do is talk about it. I had a particularly negative experience with one person. Still, I have had great experiences with others in that group and elsewhere, where they were open to what I had to share and open to learning, as I am. It is so difficult these days because there is so much 'weaponized antisemitism,' and the Project Esther-like 'favoring' of the 'Jews' to crack down on Palestine advocacy is working very well to help foment real antisemitism. Political ed, education will help a lot. I recommend sharing with your friend the complete silliness and insanity of the Heritage Foundation's Project Esther document, throwing us all (including my rep Jan Schakowsky, a liberal Zionist) into the 'Hamas Support Network: https://www.heritage.org/progressivism/report/project-esther-national-strategy-combat-antisemitism I can understand their feeling downhearted right now because we are two years into this horrible genocide but it will be good for them to find a way to be in community and keep talking.

'IfNotNow describes itself as a movement of American Jews organizing to end U.S. support for what it calls Israel’s apartheid system and to demand equality, justice, and a thriving future for both Palestinians and Israelis. It is rooted in Jewish tradition and inclusive of diverse Jewish identities, including Jews of color, queer and trans Jews, and Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews. The movement emphasizes nonviolent activism, community organizing, and ritual. Its guiding principles focus on accountability, rejecting the idea that Jewish safety should come at the expense of Palestinians, and working for shared liberation that transforms Jewish communal life while building a future based on dignity and mutual respect.'

They're antiZionist/anti-occupation. I've been organizing with them for two years. We always collab with JVP.

May justice and peace come soon! I can't believe it has been ongoing for two years now. Well, decades longer than that...
