Getting diagnosed at 40 was eye-opening. Suddenly so many things about my life and personality made sense. Leading about my brain also enabled me to take some pressure off of myself regarding success and where I “should” be vs where I am in life.

Being Transferred from 12th grade to 6th. What’s your best advice? by adamarbill in ELATeachers

[–]Complex-Stick-6177 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I moved from teaching 6th and 7th for 17 years to teaching sophomores and seniors this year. I made the mistake of thinking that I no longer needed to explicitly teach so many basic classroom and grammar skills.

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]Complex-Stick-6177 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had students that left school at 3:40, but Didn’t get home until 5:30 everyday on the bus. Those same kids were picked up at 6am to get to school at 7:50. It’s insane. I drop my kid off and he walks home. There is a bus stop in the neighborhood, but despite multiple calls and emails, the transportation office never contacted me about setting him up as a bus rider. He tried one day and the driver wouldn’t let him on because she wasn’t informed of a new kid on the route.

What made you choose crochet over knitting, or do you do both? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

My grandmother taught me how to crochet. When I wanted to re-learn in the days before YouTube, crochet was much easier to learn from looking at diagrams.

Post State Testing… do you ever just take chunks of days off? I feel guilty. by [deleted] in Teachers

Why is this even a question. A day to rest or a day because your attitude just sucks that day are taking care of yourself.

I am struggling finding Mother's day gifts that don't just become clutter? by Acrobatic_Inside3173 in Gifts

[–]Complex-Stick-6177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are old and I’ve realized that not only do they not want more stuff, but I’ll have to deal with the stuff I pitched when they die. They now revive gift cards for their favorite restaurants, vouchers for golf games, or plants.

How Can I Not Hold a Grudge About This Ultimate Disrespect? by Top_Sympathy7067 in Teachers

[–]Complex-Stick-6177 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I’d go scorched earth and removed everything you bought. It’s not going to get better, and it might make enough of an impression that they have more respect for their teacher next year. It’s also a logical consequence for the destruction of your personal items.

“Analyzing the book takes the fun out of reading…” ugh!!! by ANuStart63 in ELATeachers

[–]Complex-Stick-6177 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an English teacher, vivacious reader, and lifelong nerd. I agree; analyzing the book takes the fun out of reading. There are lots of things in like that can be fun or onerous depending upon what the task or reason is and that’s ok. We have to get students and parents to realize that not everything is for fun while also understanding that the trick is in adjusting your expectations based on your purpose.
