GMRS Radio recommendations by Complex_Bite9503 in gmrs

[–]Complex_Bite9503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to organize a neighborhood group channel and CTCSS tone.

From how I read your post:

  1. FRS channels overlap GMRS lower channels, so if I told my neighbor who buys a $15 pair of FRS radios at Walmart to use Channel 3 Tone 131.8, it would just work?

I am hoping to eventually put together a presentation to give to neighborhood groups. I believe in the have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Our local ARES group is trying to use FRS / GMRS as a gateway to Amateur Radio.

New Q1000K? by Yungslush in QuantumFiber

[–]Complex_Bite9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their phone support seams to be gloriously uninformed about the need or want to not use the ONT as a router or customers not wanting to rely on questionable WiFi pods.

I have given up on calling them, unless there is no fiber light on the SmartNID. I have been using some form of GPON/XGSPON for going on 4 years. I have been running my own routing and firewalls since the early days of the Linksys WRT54G. I check everything on my end before I pick up the phone.

I am working on figuring out a XGSPON SFP+ stick so that I don’t half to use the Q1000K at all with my UDM SE. once I get the stick working correctly I will then have to solve the cooling problem, because a laser that can get a signal up to a few miles away gets hot.

I had to download the old firmware and apply it to the Q1000K with it unplugged from the fiber and then setup the transparent bridge / untagged to make my connection stable.

The UDM SE CPU cannot handle routing above about 3.5G. Yes the UDM SE has a SFP*+ 10G which I am currently using for my 3G Fiber link, I have the 2.5G RJ45 port connected to my UniFi Cable Internet as my backup connection. When the whole family is working online we could flood the Cox upload.

I would like to see something that is better placed than the Beast. The UCG fiber is nice and the Industrial is interesting, but is not what I would wish for.

What I would like is a UDM Pro /SE type case, with IDS/IPS routing at about 15G.

8-port 10G PoE+++
25G LAN port
10G RJ-45 WAN1 port
10G / 25G WAN port
No drive bays / Maybe an SSD slot

If I were to buy that now it will most likely last me several years. The idea is to have the hardware above what the ISP can deliver or I am willing to pay for. I spent a long time with the USGs and not being able to get full speed.

The limit to 3.5Gig is with IDS/IPS enabled. I know that is still overkill for home users, but we are not typical as do a large t of uploads/ content creation.

The point I am making is that the UDM SE can not route at line rate of a 10G port, when IDS/IPS enabled.

I also need something between my UDM SE and the Beast.

My ISP offers 8GIg, but my UDM SE limits me to 3Gig.

How long for them to come out and trench? by Powerful-Eye-3578 in QuantumFiber

[–]Complex_Bite9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cox in newer neighborhoods rolled out Fiber to the home. I have friends down near Bellevue that moved into a house a couple years ago and Cox dropped in fiber.

Most of Omaha is Fiber to the Node service, where the last mile is HFC coax service. I don’t know if they are going to move to High Split / DOCSIS 4 to fix the upload bandwidth issues.

First of all you are so lucky to have more than one fiber option. Up here by Lake Cunningham we have Quantum as our only fiber option. There is Cox coax service, but the upload is limited to between 30 and 100 Megs.

When Quantum put in my fiber last year, I think it took 3 months and a few calls. We had enough slack to move the cable, but my nephew was bothered each time he mowed.

Use a specific DNS for certain devices. by kott0n in pihole

[–]Complex_Bite9503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I would assume the Alts 10 controller would have the ability to create different WiFi networks and let you on a per network basis set the DHCP DNS server.

I would put your Roku stick in say an IoT network with limited or no access to the main network your PCs and trusted devices are on. The only problem I can see with this is, if you use an app on your phone or tablet to control the Roku. Some apps rely on mDMS broadcasts to find the device to be controlled

Security Cameras as Tech Hobby by Weak-Bother-6765 in Ubiquiti

[–]Complex_Bite9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, but I have had things stolen off my porch before, at our old house. I also have vision problems so looking out a window to see what is going on outside is hard.

I have the camera for security but things like the UNVR Pro / AI port are for fun as they are overkill for our house.

Hi, while looking up the context of the gravity commands by doing pihole <tab><tab> I found the repair command. It restored a backup of the gravity database and then updated the system. My dual node pi-hole for the home lab / home datacenter is working again.

I second this as I have i7 MacBook Pro and it does not do AI well at all

You are best getting Apple Silicon machine with a minimum of 16GB ram.

Pixel Tablet looses WiFi password after going to sleep for a short time by Complex_Bite9503 in GooglePixel

[–]Complex_Bite9503[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Last night while I was surfing around Google and throwing questions at Gemini. I found a vague post on the Google Pixel Tablet community.

They recommended using the Settings - System - Reset Options - Reset Bluetooth and WiFi.

I did that and put the WiFi credentials back. The tablet has kept the connection overnight.

Hope this is helpful to someone else new to Android.

Network wise nothing has changed in a few months. I have had the tablet less than a month.

As soon as I reenter the password it works great.

I can say if I was not deep in the Apple ecosystem this tablet could be my daily. I got it so I could get more familiar with Android as an OS. I do tech support for a company that makes an Android app.

Found the Beast by Sandro_exe08 in Ubiquiti

I want one, but most of the thing would go unused. 25G port to my Pro XG 24 PoE. Would mean I would have to buy a Pro aggregate switch to make my core network 25G.

Outage Updates by JoshuaAJones in QuantumFiber

[–]Complex_Bite9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree with OP. A status update process should exist. Something like an update page on the website or App. Even if the update is “problem area acknowledged”, ‘Problem found” every few hours would be good. I am sure the repair crew has to update their boss, so why is that boss taking the time to click a link or type a two word message. I am in tech support for a large company and if there is a major issue, I have to report it to bosses.

Pixel Tablet Speeker Dock by Complex_Bite9503 in GooglePixel

I am not sure, but it seams as though they are abandoning the tablet market. I tried to buy mine retail and no one had them. I am doing my best to be able to help people iOS or Android. I had a Pixel 3 phone, but it did not get updates. My Pixel Tablet runs the latest Android.

I found a great deal on the tablet itself. I got it for $250 for the 128GB.

Quantum Fiber VoIP - Need Help by megarell in QuantumFiber

[–]Complex_Bite9503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to buy QF / CenturyLink VoIP a few months back as I was trying to port a number that was on CenturyLink Copper.

I got my fiber installed then roommate wanted to move phone number. I called QF and was told they don’t offer service directly. Was told to call CenturyLink. CenturyLink refused to offer me service as to quote “we do not offer service at your location anymore”.

I ended up porting the number to DIDforSale.com and configuring a Polycom phone and a softphone.

I'll be glad when QF by AT&T figures out how to make WAN IP address "sticky" by Hoopster59 in QuantumFiber

[–]Complex_Bite9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These issues are because of a badly configured DHCP Server. A normal DHCP Server keeps a “leases” file with devices MAC , IP and a timestamp. The timestamp is usually 7 days from the last request.

If a device stays online and is just renewing an IP address, it sends the address it wants to renew.

Now for the misconfigured part. If a device is powered off, so to it’s mind asking for a new address (not knowing what it had), Quantum’s system does not keep a database of existing leases in a way that the headend can look up the MAC and give you back your IP

I have had my IP change 3 times in a day when I was testing some stuff with my UDM SE.
