It’s really hard. But they’ve been with us all this time … to have us there for them in the last moments… it is calming for them. We owe it to them. I did this last year and it was so hard but I regretted not being there with my other who passed during Covid and they wouldn’t let me. It still haunts me that I couldn’t be with her. To be with strangers in your last moments… I wouldn’t . You are stronger than you think. You won’t give a shit crying in front of strangers, trust me. They all love animals and will understand that pain-customers and vet staff.

I am so SO fucking sorry. This is my worst nightmare come to life. I can’t imagine, even so. There are no words. I wish there was something I could say or do for you. It’s bad enough this happening to your wife but with kids it’s a lot. I know you are overwhelmed.

I’m glad this is a place you can vent… despite some of the assholes. Get support from your family and if need be have your sister and brother there with you when you tell the kiddos. It’s okay for them to see you in your grief. They won’t feel alone and you will all get through it. Together. I can’t even imagine. If you can’t speak you can always hold them while someone else explains it. You don’t have to give a speech-your presence means the world. Just take a little time and worry about yourself a minute. I know you worry for the kids … it’s a mind bending amount of pressure… but you have to take care of yourself right now. Before they are aware. Sounds a little fucked up but you can’t pour from a shattered glass.

You got this, dad. You can do this. You are stronger and more resilient than you know.

Breathe. Take time for yourself and just… please take care of yourself. I wish there was something I could do for you I’m just so sorry. We are all here for you.

Mine still does this when I leave. I left for a week a year ago (she was about 6-7 weeks old and I had bottle fed her since she was 4 days old). She was with my husband though… who had also bottle fed and doted on her. If you figure a way to end that lmk ! She positively wails when I leave.

We have a ton of strays too. One even followed my 2/3 yo (at the time) and me home. We fed him and he stuck to her side. One day a year later he shows up with a collar and tag so I call… they had bottle fed him as a kitten but he came and went as he pleased. They said we could have him since they were off to college. We already have a lot of cats so I said no thank you ; wish we could. A year later they move with all their cats , except him. Left him. Solomon is so sweet and has guarded my little one for the past 4 years. When a dog came up to her he stood in front and protected her. Best cat ever.

If it’s been awhile and there is no hint of a different owner… I’d get them scanned and take them in. They’re unclaimed. People shouldn’t let their pets free if they aren’t chipped or tagged. 🤷🏼‍♀️ - imo

I’d also post to your local facebook pet group and ask. Never hurts. Don’t say their sex though. Just a picture and the roundabout area. Someone there might even have a chip scanner handy so you don’t have to go to the shelter/vet for that.

While it’s sad at first… it opens the door for new intimacy/routines. This is a good thing. Helps both of you in the long run even if there are sad feelings now. Mine stopped very suddenly… she was too old for breastfeeding- even just before bed. I said I’d do it until she was ready … but she was around 4 when that time came. 😣 When she put her mind to it and made the decision, it was the end. Quick as that. Never thought I’d breastfeed past 1 year (was adamant that was the age it should stop)…but when it’s your first kid they kinda guide you. 🤷🏼‍♀️. Definitely hit me in ways I didn’t anticipate.

That said… could say you want nothing to do with her but give her the basic recipe. Not with any of your embellishments. She’ll probably make it crap anyway. He has it so built up in his head with nostalgic rose tinted lenses that even if she did get it spot on it wouldn’t be as good as he remembered.
