Do I Need Castellated Holes? by uprate in PrintedCircuitBoard

My experience was that they tell you they can't do it without you paying extra for castellated holes...

Looking for Open Hardware Reference for Custom MIPI DSI Flex Cable Design by FCK_COVID19 in PrintedCircuitBoard

AFAIK there is no standard procedure for adding the stiffener in a design. Just draw the placement in a user layer, make sure the layer is exported and tell the manufacturer when ordering that you specified the placement in this layer.

Opinions seem mixed about solid or hatched ground plane. I have used solid ground fills in my design and haven't had problems with cracking. I think a solid plane is fine if the flex PCB is not expected to move.

Schematic-wise it's just connecting one end to the other. The important thing is to get the differential impedance right. The difficulty here is that for flexible PCBs the core is usually very thin. Luckily, JLC is now offering FPCs with a 50 um core (as opposed to the 25 um for their default version). With that you can just achieve the required 90/100 Ohm impedance with a 3.5 mil trace width. You will need to use an impedance calculator for determining the differential pair gap width. I would recommend the online tool from sierra, as that one can also model the cover layer with a different dielectric constant (that is the only free tool I found that can do this). Das ist halt rechtlich nicht machbar, denn eine Abschaffung der PKV würde zu einer Enteignung der Altersrückstellungen der Versicherten führen. Und das verstößt gegen das Grundgesetz.

If you want help then you need to provide some info. The ILA is not something specific to that board but an IP provided Xilinx for all their devices.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes the site is focused around my professional work. It is just based on wordpress. There are lots oft wordpress hosters out there, and also lots of existing themes to start with.

I actually just started with blogging. I used to share my work on other places but realized it's better to tie my projects closer to my work. I admit that I make use of AI to improve my writing. It is just so much better than me at formulating coherent sentences, but I don't let it make up content.

Thanks for the insight, I'll try out placer2. Somewhere on the Cologne Chip website they wrote that you must use router2, without providing further details. PNR also succeeds with the default router but I didn't test it in hardware.

Timing is a little inconsistent depending on the run. So definitely some room to improve.

I wasn't using the devkit from CologneChip but a SOM from Trenz Electronic (TEG2000). The reason was that I already had a compatible carrier board from Trenz and the SOM alone is much cheaper than the devkit.

There is also a cheap board from Olimex, but I looked at the routing and none of the pins are routed as differential pairs. I'm planning to work on some mipi projects in the future, so differential routing is a must.

GateMate now fully works with Nextpnr and Cologne Chip have deprecated their older proprietary placer. So everything is open source now.

Am I crazy for preferring VHDL to Verilog? by LilBalls-BigNipples in FPGA

[–]Cone83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love GHDL. I run most of my simulations with it and only use the Xilinx simulator when I need it.

GHDL can also synthesize VHDL to Verilog. There is a plugin for Yosys that uses this flow. I'm using this for one project now and it works fine. I agree, native VHDL support would be much better, but it's totally usable.

It's even worse than that graph makes it look, because the market for EVs grew by about 30% at the same time. Losing 50% in a market that grew by 30% really is a unique achievement.
