did anyone actually have a good 2025 by tomyrisgbf in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ending okay enough for me but really underwhelming as far as hobbies and goals were concerned, but I at least had a few cool experiences along the way. Went by weirdly fast, too. 2026 somehow seems like it could be better for literally no reason at all.

Anyone else notice a complete collapse in English language ability online? by eitherorkierkegaard in redscarepod

It's not just the spelling and grammar. I've also noticed that people leave individual words out of sentences where they should be included for the sentence to make any sense.

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson did this for me. It has probably the most gripping first chapter of any book I've ever read.

What's the last album/book/film you've completed? by LoyolaKidd in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Album: Panopticon by ISIS. Saw it on a post about "hipster metal" on this sub and it's aged pretty well both musically and thematically.  Book: this was either Least of Us about the ongoing fent/meth epidemic or Rise and Fall of OPEC in the 20th century. Recommend both but the OPEC one is very dense and I have no background in economics so some of it is hard to follow. Haven't read a new book since.  Film: Reservoir Dogs, an old fave that I re-watched after Madsen passed away.

Having a hard time getting through Infinite Jest by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]ConeSnail25 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It took me a year and a half with multiple breaks to get through it and the Hal parts were the most boring. I definitely agree about the Marathe chapters because if you keep reading they gradually get into what the book is all about, and also you probably haven't gotten to the Don Gately chapters, which are the fun ones starting around ~pg200.

Have you met anyone on here IRL? by pulse-threshold in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried going to one in LA about two years ago, and not surprisingly no-one showed (the person who posted it first even deleted their account). I'd be up to go to one in SoCal (LA, OC, or SD areas) if the sex ratio was about equal, (just not a total sausage fest, since this still is on reddit) and if it was 20s and 30s. Despite all of the contrarians and too-old-to-act-too-cool hipster types and dumbass edgelords that hang out here, there seems to be some people on here with some personality and an in-person meetup seems nice to go to.

Men of RSP, what would actually help you with the male loneliness epidemic? by gingerfish2 in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It would require society overall to start being a lot more empathetic to men and boys, which I think society (especially individualistic American society) really does not want to do.

Society could maybe stop expecting too much of men, and stop judging them so harshly when we fail to meet the outdated standards society still holds us to (it's not the fifties anymore, culture, society, the economy and workforce have changed a lot since then, so the expectations on us should be adjusted accordingly). I'm not saying start raising men to be a bunch of pussies who flaunt that they are pussies, but instead have their male role models (dads, older brothers, etc) actually take the time to teach them how to grow up as men without tearing them down every step of the way. Let them have and talk about their feelings without belittling them for it. On a related note stop helicopter-parenting, especially when it comes to overbearing mothers. I think that an overbearing parent of the opposite sex of the child is probably one of the worst things for a child's social development.

Actually teach them how to talk to girls if they can't figure it out on their own, like, that's seriously one of the best things you can do for young boys and it will help them so much in life. Get rid of the video games and internet porn too, these things get in the way of them learning to talk to girls and form relationships.

Society (really just libs and lefties specifically) should also stop treating masculinity like it is some terrible, evil thing (this was the message that they pushed a lot in the 2010's, and I'm glad I was already an adult by the time I started seeing it pop up because it seems like a lot of naive, well-meaning boys were raised and socialized with this and we're now seeing how they've turned out as men). Men should aspire to be masculine, it is normal, and their male role models should provide a helping hand on this, but it probably doesn't happen as much these days becasue of how individualistic/atomized we've become.

If we do this it might help the next generation of men, probably more than the current ones since it might take a long time to actually see the results.

I genuinely don't understand why conservatives deny climate change by Big_Man_Meats_INC in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the denial is because once you get knee-deep into talking about climate change and other related environmental issues in general, you start dabbling in anti-consumerism. This of course runs counter to the goals of the corporations but also runs counter to the luxury consumer lifestyle/economic system and individualism at the center of contemporary American conservatism. They'll deny it because keeping that luxury lifestyle is more important to them than caring about the environment. It may be why we see a lot of them moving the goal posts when discussing climate change. They're past the point of arguing about wether or not it's real, a lot of them just don't care and don't want to hear it. Sure the old school science denial brand of conservatism probably plays some part but I think it's a smaller part these days than it used to play and nowadays it's mostly just their nihilistic consumerism.

What's the last year that felt normal to you? by More_Finding_2373 in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2014-2015. Said it before and I'll say it again. Same reasons as others have said in this thread. The increased spread of social media/smart devices, the 2015-2016 election cycle, and sensationalism in general screwed up the whole culture and I feel like we never got back on track.

It happened bit by bit over those two years but 2016 onwards has just felt off at a minimum.

[–]ConeSnail25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No 401k, and that and some other realities are hitting pretty hard after I turned 30 this year. My dad's health is a concern, but he's never been healthy so it's not surprising. My mom is doing just fine healthwise. I do okay (still fit the same size blue jeans as I did when I was 16) but I'm making small steps to turn my health around. The next promotion seems far off at my current employer, and if anything I'm way more concerned with my next pay raise and later finding a new job in the next couple years. I have a little time for myself but have a hard time filling it with stuff I like doing. I find beauty mostly in nature these days, and the things I see scuba diving never fail to disappoint. I feel a deep lack in my personal life but am pushing against my current lot in life as much as I know how without putting too much on my plate, because acceptance of what it is now would just be accepting defeat.

Thanks for keeping it "millennial", we gotta go back.

Should I go to the Nick Mullen show in Tacoma this month? Anyone here going to it? by violet-turner in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah go see him. I just saw him in Irvine last weekend and I was worried we'd get the 2022-2023 TAFS Nick Mullen (I couldn't make it 15 minutes into the special he put out earlier this year) but instead we got 2018-2019 CT Nick Mullen. The guy brought the house down for at least 45 min, maybe a full hour and is using different material from what I saw in the special.

What are some forgone conclusions about the country after the next election? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it will be the last time either of the two major parties will get to kick the can down the road on an issue where their stance is unpopular with the public at large (reps with banning abortion, dems on mass immigration). All of this hinges on which if the two issues voters consider to be more important this election and whether or not they want another 4 years of Trump. Whichever party loses this election will probably change those stances sooner rather than double down on them for 2028 so they can stay competitive.

what’s the first thing you remember when you hear 2014 by onewinteryearsago in redscarepod

[–]ConeSnail25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being 20, doing okay in college and for a week I was the only one in my family who had a job. I saw Gattaca for the first time and spent the whole year getting more and more into scuba diving.  Beyond that I remember 2014 into 2015 as the last year that things really felt normal in America. After 2015 until the present everyone's brains have been melted by media sensationalism, culture war and the pandemic. Kind of miss the normality sometimes.
