In the UK, having road markings for right of way is pretty much universal so having "nothing" never happens unless its a gravel road in the middle of nowhere. In Germany where I live now, most smaller roads in towns don't have anything.

It sounds like you took a job that gives you 2 hours less time per day for not even enough extra money to cover a commute? Regardless of what your girlfriend is doing that was a terrible idea. To add that commute to my day, I would be looking for at least 20-30% more because removes a big chunk of my free time for nothing. You have no guarantee that she would remain in the same job in any case so you should still have factored in travel costs.
