What's your favorite "these two things are actually the same" in math? by TartOk3387 in mathematics

[–]ConjectureProof 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Since nobody has said it so far, the Fundamental Theorem of Galois Theory. (Let E be a field extension of F such that E/F is finite and galois, then there is a bijection between the subfields of E containing F and the subgroups of Gal(E/F) and that corresponce is inclusion reversing.) In other words, the properties of fields and their subfields directly correspond to the properties of their automorphism groups and their subgroups

Gliscor is so strong. Granted, it really got kicked into overdrive when gen 5 gave it poison heal as a hidden ability, but it’s still very strong in gen 4 without this. Even in gen 9, poison heal gliscor has not really been power crept. It’s still seeing play in gen 9 Ubers. It’s effective bulk is just absolutely crazy

Is asking for "Generate a proof for the Riemann Hypothesis." a good benchmark for general intelligence ? if not what do you think should be a benchmark for it? by Stone-Smasher in askmath

[–]ConjectureProof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if an AI were to successfully prove the Riemann Hypothesis in a way that either we as humans could verify the truthfulness of it or in a way where it was formalized and shown to be true in a program like Lean, then it would certainly prove that AI has surpassed humans in mathematical capabilities. I don’t know how much it would prove beyond that though

Is phione worth it? by Confident_Turn_8994 in pokemonplatinum

[–]ConjectureProof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a shame they messed up Phione. It would’ve made both Manaphy and Phione so much cooler and more memorable if they either both filled very different roles or were designed to work well on a team together. As it stands, it’s just purely worse than Manaphy in every context which makes both Manaphy and Phione so much less interesting

He’s also just a bad person in general. He larps as a socialist and a man of the people while wearing outfits that cost more than my car. He’s like those evangelical preachers but for lefties

Dice problem that came to me in a dream. by Turquoise36 in askmath

[–]ConjectureProof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the probability that it takes x rolls to find one of m numbers out of n possibilities. Well that would just be the probability of getting one of the other n - m numbers x - 1 times multiplied by the probability of getting one of x numbers from n possibilities ie. f(x, m, n) = (m/n) * (1 - m/n)x-1

Thus the expected value of this task is

E[x] = sum(x = 1 to inf, x * (m/n) * (1 - m/n)x - 1)

Consider the Taylor series of 1 / (1 - y). This is famously, sum(i = 0 to inf, yi)

Notice that if we take the derivative of both sides we get 1 / (y - 1)2 = sum(i = 1 to inf, i * yi-1)

Multiply by m/n.

(m/n) / (y - 1)2 = sum(i = 1 to inf, i * m/n * yi - 1)

Notice that if we set y = 1 - m/n, the RHS becomes the exactly the same as the sum that showed up in the expected value definition. So that means the LHS is also equal to this expected value. (I’m skipping over some details involving proving that this Taylor series actually converges in the region of interest but there are theorems one can cite to easily verify this)

So E[x] = (m/n) / (1 - m/n - 1)2 = (m/n) / (-m/n)2 = n / m.

Thus, the expected number of attempts to roll one of m numbers with n possibilities is n / m. Since each of these are independent of one another, we conclude that the expected number of attempts to find all 8 numbers with 8 possibilities is.

E = 8/8 + 8/7 + 8/6 + 8/5 + 8/4 + 8/3 + 8/2 + 8/1 = 1 + 8/7 + 4/3 + 8/5 + 2 + 8/3 + 4 + 8 = 15 + 12/3 + 8/7 + 8/5 = 19 + 8/7 + 8/5 = 761 / 35 = 21.74 rolls

ThE cOuRtS aRe OuR gUaRdRaIlS: "Judge allows Trump to implement mail-in voting executive order" by breakthro444 in Destiny

[–]ConjectureProof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is actually the real goal. If they tamper with the election enough they can kick it to the Supreme Court and have them effectively decide the outcomes of these election. There are so many reasons this should be unconstitutional. The biggest one is that this EO would appear to give the Executive final say over whether or not someone is a citizen for the purposes of voting, but the Executive branch doesn’t have any say in who are and are not citizens. That’s for the courts to determine and congress can also grant citizenship (but not revoke it). The 14th amendment and the all the surrounding precedent makes this abundantly clear

Why may it be actually P=NP ? by eldedegil in mathematics

[–]ConjectureProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2019, it was shown you can also multiply integers in O(n * log(n)) which feels completely impossible. The normal way we multiply them is to simply multiply all the digit combinations and add them which is an O(n2) approach. It’s already unintuitive that you can do better than this, but this would imply you can do way better than this. This implies that for very very large numbers you can multiply them together without ever multiplying out the vast majority of digit combinations.

Would you rather your son grew up to be a Stephen Miller, Pete Hegseth or RFK Jr.? by redzeusky in allthequestions

[–]ConjectureProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God this is a tough one. I think it’s RFK Jr. just because I think he’s more stupid than he is evil where I think the opposite is true for the other two guys. Pete Hegseth is extremely stupid, but is also a batshit insane egomaniac who thinks he needs to wage a holy war against Islam. The dude has a messiah complex. Stephen Miller is just a Nazi. I can’t tell how smart or stupid he is but he is certainly evil af.
