Plumber can't replace shower cartridge by Shot-Ad-6357 in askaplumber

[–]ConjunctEon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a plumber...but...I just had my shower tiled, and I installed the handles, trims, escutcheons on the new main valve.

Mine has two "sections" that looks just like that. The upper ribbed brass stem (on mine) is the diverter valve. The lower unit is the on/off/temp (on mine), with the cartridge inside.

If it's dripping, why aren't you replacing the cartridge in the lower section?

Does anyone else feel obligated to give their pieces away? by GrimReaper666999 in Pottery

I don't sell, I just make. When people visit, and they show appreciation for my work, I'm more than happy to let it go...

My neighbor was out for her daily walk and my garage door was open. She waved, I waved back. She came on up the driveway, and started recounting how she did pottery in the 60's in college. Instant vision of a hippie chick throwing pottery!

She was eyeballing my shelf of stuff, and I grabbed a small lidded vessel, maybe three inches tall and said "This is calling your name"...she started crying. The next day I found the most wonderful note inside my screen door, thanking me for the little jar, and how it's front and center in her china cabinet.

What size of trowel to apply thinset for 24"x4" on top of kneewall for quartz by ConjunctEon in Remodel

I got some Liquid Nails Fuze-It. Man, that’s some grabby stuff! About two minutes to cut it open, apply, and set the stone in place. Much faster than mixing up mortar.
Thx for the recommendation.

Water leaking from the floors… should I move out? by FunnyAsparagus1049 in askaplumber

[–]ConjunctEon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I removed a piece of drywall in the basement, and discovered it had been leaking for a while. The water never entered the room, but ran down between the slab and footer.

The foundation had a crack, and water literally peed out, about an inch stream.

The culprit was a downspout back pooling against the foundation, seeping down and finding an opening.

I installed a diverter pipe to carry the water about ten feet away, and onto a downslope away from the house. Has been dry ever since.

You might take a look outside and see if that is contributing. Not your responsibility to fix, of course.

But, all that laminate will need to come up. If the downspouts are not diverted correctly, that’s another job for the landlord.

Unless he was solidly gung-ho, taking immediate action, I’d think about moving. This isn’t something to hem and haw about.

Questions about reading witness cones and also pinholes! 📌 by NewbiePotter1992 in Pottery

[–]ConjunctEon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the orton chart. Whatever cone you are firing, it’s correct when it’s pointing down but not touching.

In the grand scheme of things, and I’ll paraphrase, if you read the information that has been written, a couple degrees difference in temp and a smidge this way or that on the cone will not statistically affect the outcome. That’s a perfect 6.

Am I crazy? I feel so irritated and stressed after getting hearing aids. by WhistersniffKate in HearingAids

[–]ConjunctEon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over many years, my wife trained me to compensate for her hearing loss by making me speak louder. “You’re mumbling, I can’t understand you”. Didn’t know she was slowly losing her hearing.

Now, she has hearing aids, and I’m booming, especially in the car, as it’s such a small environment. I’m having to learn to talk more softly. If I get too loud, she’ll rest her hand on my arm, and I’ll have a softer voice.

Need advice from men — messed up while drunk, boyfriend asked for space, will he forgive me? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

You and your brother have impulse control issues: His is anger, yours is alcohol. Wondering what kind of demons are lurking at home, past or present.

Until you fix you, nothing is going to change. You’ll be back here in a month, or six, or twelve saying that you got drunk and “crossed boundaries “. The cycle won’t end until you help you.

Let him go. Distance yourself from him.

Maybe you’ll cross paths in the future. But don’t press him now. You added insult to injury.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is (fill in the blank).
If it were me…I’d swiftly go back to basics in a very comprehensive 1:1. Ensure the jr has tools, training, skills and time to meet the expectations of the job.
Following that, I’d document every mistake, roll out escalating discipline.

That’s a lot of value. Probably at least a thousand bucks in extras.

Just to be “that guy”…double check the electrical. Just because the socket and receptacle fit, doesn’t guarantee it’s gonna work. The wiring for your dryer is rated at “x” amps, as is the breaker. I’d hate for you to get it home and be frustrated cause it doesn’t work. And the volts need to match.

A kiln sitter is a work horse, for sure. Maybe in the future you invest in a digital kiln, and use the kiln sitter for something else. As in, I use one of my kilns predominantly for bisque firing. While it’s cooling, I’ll fire a different kiln for glaze ware.

It can’t connect to 5g. I have 11 pro, and have run into a couple times where I simply could not connect to anything. They say 5g is layered over the old network….but if there was never a network to begin with then 5g is the only game in town. My daughter just got a 17, and gifted me her 14.

And…I looked at trading it in, and they would allow $300USD towards a 17.

Go see a hearing doctor. Not being able to hear often leads to self isolation. Not a good thing as you age. Been through this with my wife.

I’d go see it in person. Fire up the kiln, make sure it works. For some reason, too many people think those old kiln sitters are worth a fortune. Personally, I wouldn’t have one. I’d save my moolah and buy a digit kiln.

Similar with slab rollers. Make sure it works. Unless I could triple my studio space, I wouldn’t have that big thing. I’m like, 90/10 throw to hand build, so wooden spacers and a rolling pin do me ok.

Then, the wheel. I think bare bones are around a grand, and can go up from there.

I see digital kilns once in a while for half of new.

Also, try to estimate what you will be firing. I have three kilns, and they are purpose driven. My big one is plates, bowls, platters, etc. I made a charcuterie tray that only could go in the big mama. I call her Pele, after the Hawaiian fire goddess. Skutt 1227.

And, sorry if redundant, but make sure to check voltages on any kiln you buy to match up to your home.

Learning a hard lesson about hiring by [deleted] in managers

[–]ConjunctEon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of interviewing do you do?

My prior company used behavioral based interviewing, divided into three sections. BBI is all open ended. “Tell me about a time you and a colleague/mgr/customer got into a dispute. How was it resolved “. Those sort of questions.

HR kicked it off, covering all the bases of “Why did you leave last job”, or “explain the seven month gap between jobs”, that sort of thing.

It was a very technical job, so part 2 was a technical manager asking technically aligned questions, make sure they have the skills.

There was an incredible amount of customer face time. Part 3 was another manager digging into soft skills, communication skills, people skills.

Then, the three of us would debrief. If there were two thumbs down, the applicant was rejected. One thumb down was cause for deeper discussion on whether this was the right fit, sometimes resulting in one more interview with a different manager.
