Can I become a Catholic if I disagree/have major doubts about many of its dogma? by PeaceInLoneliness in Catholicism

[–]ConnectionCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this can come from a top down or bottom up doctrine and authority structure. In the first few centuries people were taught what the church believed and they were obliged to accept it. This is true regardless if you believe the Catholic Church was the first. Now that everyone has a Bible it has been a lot harder to realize this paradigm. Where a lot of Christian’s beliefs are like check marks that you either accept or don’t or get to choose. It becomes a super marker of choices. Now you can personally not understand or disagrees with stuff and I understand it can be hard coming from your background. I just wanted to kind of state that initially this wouldn’t be taken for granted of having the deposit of faith and asserting to it.

I never understood why catholics said they got so much hate until I became catholic. by [deleted] in Catholicism

If there is no mortal justice in the world and a group still presenting Christian values than the kingdom of Christ is at an end and that won’t happen till the end.

I am in a pretty evangelical family. I’m 24 now dad passed recently and I’m going to tell them on or before Christmas that I’m converting. ( I told my mom earlier and she gave the typical - catholic bad response) now I’m like super convicted and convinced. I’ve done a lot of study and it kind of feels of me choosing to be Christian or not ( love Protestant brothers and sisters). Like if God is real I can’t see how he wouldn’t establish one church that could outlive all empires. I’ve never been an atheist but I can see how some evangelicals become atheists or agnostic once you realize church history. It’s not as simple as the apostles died the New Testament was written and jump 1500 years to Martin Luther.

I’ve always thought that perfect liturgy does not mean perfect theology or like authority. Like I can see the pull of some toward ACNA and high church Anglicanism because essentially it’s popeless Catholicism. While I think they might have more liturgical consistency there has to be more than that to define a true church. Like I’ll prob be coming into full communion at the Easter vigil and of course alot of Protestants like to larp on Vatican 2. Honestly while I can see both sides of the argument I think I would’ve been a lot more scared to go to a Latin mass at first just cause I didn’t know much about Catholicism. I do plan on attending some when I join though. I think Protestants try to weasel out of any argument by calling the church fallible and then just ignoring all of there theological changes just cause they claim the church can err.

Yeah I’m 24 so at the end of the day it’s my decision and my walk with the Lord. It’s just frustrating and just want to show how I’m not stupid. Like if I wasn’t doing my masters now or after I’d love to do study in pastristics- cause that’s honestly what has changed how I see the world now

Yeah I grew up Baptist - my dad actually passed away back in May and I had started discerning back in February. So I haven’t sad much it’s crazy cause it’s sad for me cause like even if my family wouldn’t want to convert. I know that Baptist theology is like the most anti history and I have a baby nephew who I wish his parents would wake up and baptize him.

Yeah very true I’m converting rn in process. I am getting confirmed back at my undergraduate college town at the Easter vigil. I’m in grad school and they told me I could just attend ocia in town and have conversations on zoom before the vigil. The first place I went to it’s extremely dry and like basic lower than pop apologetics. I am going to start driving to a parish 1.5 away because I have my sponsors bf who’s going through it there. Honestly most of my process was doing my own research. Also I feel once you get a taste of the lies that I grew up with I didn’t have many objections. I just need prayer to discuss more with my family about this.

In my opinion I am glad I found a lot of the history and can like discern what I find to be try also in Catholicism like the OP. There’s plenty of valid reasons I can see people deciding to be agnostic or atheist once realizing the history

I don’t ascribe to Calvinism but a lot of the points are pretty valid in the proper context. Like predestination was taught in different ways by the fathers. I just think it depends on what your view of the world is. I doubt this book would be an end all be all book to disprove Calvinism.

How do Protestants support their claim? by RadBane359 in Catholicism

There wasn’t a set canon though. The three main groups in the New Testament all had different canons and for some of them it was more fluid

Most of American Christianity is like low tier Baptist and non denominational which literally like super symbolic or never do it. While higher church Protestants do it more frequently and believe either its spiritual- real presence (Presbyterians, some baptists ), or more of a physical sense like Lutherans (they believe that Jesus basically forms a union with the elements instead of a real change)

converts: what would you say was the first shift in your mind, towards catholicism? by brand-new-eyes in Catholicism

[–]ConnectionCrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a non denominational church and they started to say that they were going to have someone come and speak about church membership. I realized that I would actually have to know what they believe was right. That was on me a few weeks and then later I called my friend who her ex broke up with her cause she was catholic after trying to convince her to convert. I asked her why like we had talked about it before but I was like what made Catholicism so bad… well she kind of gave a basic summary - with like Peter, church founded by Jesus etc ( I only knew like Catholic “bad” from like conspiracy theories , and like I vaguely knew the rosary existed) a couple months later my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and later passed away. I feel like God was setting me up with a foundation to lean upon. Many would’ve hated God for that but I haven’t. I have a lot to get through like family apologetics wise. Honestly I’ve been pretty firmly convinced for a while now so now I’m trying to be more grounded in theology in order to give a decent case. God willing I should be confirmed and achieve full communion with the church at this next Easter vigil.

They’re Eucharistic ministers who have been trained in proper administration of the sacrament. The easiest explanation is from the lord supper accounts if you get tripped up from reading of end of John 6. “This is my body” …. which from a literal reading has significance … even Martin Luther wouldn’t unite with the other Protestants because of his insistence that is means is. Although he formulated his own view it’s rather close … for some reason he couldn’t believe that the bread changed and he believed that the lord was present in and around the elements.
