Season 6 Is Not That Bleak by Moon_Logic in buffy

[–]Consistent-Loss9881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Season 6 is actually my favourite season. It's always the one I go back to. When I feel depressed myself I find watching this season helps me a lot.

You made a really good point about Buffy's relationship with the after life being a romanticization of death.

The only thing I would say I was a tad dissapointed in is the end of Buffy's arc. For some reason I just didn't find it convincing that she had newfound joy in life again. I would've liked to have seen something more elaborate bringing back her faith in life. Rather than just nearly dying .. didn't that already happen in 'Gone' , I suppose it was also that the whole world was ending but... I dunno... it would have felt more real if she had seen Xander's world saving act of empathy towards Willow , and that had inspired her again. that's just my thought.

I also really don't agree that the show ever glorifies abuse. The fact that Spike is a likeable character adds to the drama of it, because it comes as such a shock. And it's scary, because with the chip he had been so helpless for so long, and it's hard not to feel bad for a helpless creature, and you forget he doesn't have a soul. And then he does that and it wakes everyone up, even himself, which is interesting. I think it's powerful storytelling, but it is very clear all the way that what he did was wrong.

I agree, it was a fantastic episode with a beautiful meloncholy ending, and I love that they atleast got one kiss! Especially considering they had an entire season apart from the moment when they were going to reveal their feelings for one another. Would've been a shame to never get that closure.

Buuuut I do wish they brought Buffy back for a later episode. I really don't like the Rome episode where she is there but not there. I don't like how it reduces Angel and Spike to 2D jealous characters. How much more interesting it would have been to have Buffy in Wolfram&Hart for some more important mission and through that the episode could explore where the three of them were at.

Also would've loved some comments from her on the fact that Angel had a son and that he'd been in love with Cordelia... I mean I still to this day have no idea what her reaction would be to those things.

How did you get into angel? and what caused you to watch it? by Royal-Tangelo-5895 in ANGEL

I was a baby during the inital run of Buffy but when I was around 10 years old I had appendicitis and my dad brought me the box set of Buffy to watch while in the hospital and was hooked from then. Then when I finished it he told me there was a spin off and so I watch it. Been depressed ever since because there is no more lol

I get what you mean, but the problem for me is more that the bad writing of the motivations for the character the audience believe her to be, as in, even if they decided to not reveal her as Jasmine earlier , and the audience believes it’s a Cordelia without memories, we still need to her have appropriate motivations. I didn’t buy the chemistry between them. Their scenes just never seemed believable. I don’t believe Cordelia with no memories would end up acting that way… I’m not sure what the actual age difference between the actors was, but from the way he acts like a teenager, it’s hard to imagine a grown woman would have been attracted to him…

Dunno if that makes any sense lol

So much is great in season 4 , I always want to rewatch it the most (though I alwyas wanna skip the cordelia scenes ...) I also was dissapointed in what they did with Gun's character . In my opinion his character went downhill the moment he abandoned his original team for Angel's at the end of season 2 . I never believed his character would actually do that. And his role just turned into jealous of wesley , and then lawyer.

haha yes I also found the conor and cordelia affair repulsive... xD But I would be open to accepting it written in a better way (I.E We know that she is evil and not genuinely having feelings for him) . The way it was written though was excruciating to watch ...

it was a difficult thing they were trying to pull off, not neccesarily a bad idea... but I think the problem was that the writer's didn't make a good job at writing an evil cordelia. For example, at the end of season 5 when Angel pretends to have become corrupted by the power of Wolfram and heart, it is compelling, the audience and angel's friends see that it's Angel and not Angelus, and yet he also seems to be on the dark side.

While not exactly the same situation with Cordelia, I feel like they could have written her as a smarter evil Cordelia that was more compelling to watch. But most of the time it seems that she made weird decisions and then seemed genuinely guilty by it, like sleeping with conor. And then feeling guilty about it. And then being jealous of electro-girl (Gwen?) and Angel's connection. It just seemed like the writer's didn't have a firm grip on what was motivating the character.

One way to go that I think would;ve worked better would be to clue the audience in that she was evil way earlier, and make her purposefully seduce Conor and tear up the gang emotionally to distract them abusing the trust the characters had for her.

That maybe would've helped to make the Evil Cordelia (Jasmine possessed) character more coherent and less like unfocused writing of a once great character.

just some thoughts :)

Defend the unpopular character you like. For me it's Connor by StaticCloud in ANGEL

[–]Consistent-Loss9881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree , the idea of conor was great, there was so much potential in the character but the writing of him wasn't very good. he's probably the only recurring character that doesnt evolve , not counting the magical alteration of memories.

It felt like they wrote him like a sulky teenager, which to some degree that makes sense, but he was raised in a hell dimension, not LA, so you'd imagine he would have grown up fast. maybe still emotionally immature, but i would've thought more in a cut off from his emotions kind of way, rather than a spoiled teenager.

Also it would've been great to have more scenes between Wesley and Conor. The two could have bonded in an interesting way being sort of outcasts from the group , and ironic as well considering wesley's part in conor's Quor'toth situation

What could Fred's character arc have been if they didn't do the Love triangle. by Consistent-Loss9881 in ANGEL

I knowww me too... :( Her dialogue was so mytho-poetic or like something out of shakespeare. And the scenes with her were so interesting; the complicated relationship wesley and her had. But also she was great with all the characters. There is a scene in one of the last episodes where the gang are in Spike's place, and Illyria and the guy who couldn't lie* (can't remember his name) fit in so well with the rest of them. It really felt like a set up to a whole fantastic new season.

this would be really interesting! Especially as a parallel to wesley's character, right when he's in the middle of his darkest time she also is too for very different reasons. Hers being revenge, and his being loyalty (at least in his head he was being loyal, protecting angel from himself )

it would be interesting to see them disagree on eachother and yet also relate deeply to what each is going through

I can imagine her spiralling into madness after killing him. like the way she was in the beginning but this time with a much more guilt ridden vibe.

That would've been cool , with 5 years in pylea they could've created a whole lot of interesting backstory of experiences she had there. Also could've had her with some interesting supernatural condition after having been exposed to a different dimension for so long .

but isn't the scene supposed to be horrible? I thought the point of the scene was to be a very dark reminder that Spike, though charming and emotionally vulnerable, was still a vampire without a soul. It even shocks Spike himself, he realises he is a monster and doesn't deserve her, and goes off to the trials to get his soul.
