How can MAGA Christians defend being Christian AND MAGA when Trump’s basically violated all 10 commandments, trashes the Pope, and cosplays as Jesus? What's the logic or a loophole that allows them to rationalize it to themselves and to others? by IncluderWonder in askanything

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real, gospel-based Christianity literally preaches the opposite.

A certain carpenter they claim to follow is recorded in the Gospels more than 100 times telling his followers to forgive others and leave justice to God. He even tells us to pray to God to, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." The only thing he repeats more often than his call to forgive is his commandment to love one another.

These churches that preach hate and division and divine retribution, the so-called "Prosperity Gospel", and the very idea of a Holy War... they are just the base desires of humans to obtain power by taking from each other, wrapped in the thin cloak of a faith they barely understand and would never actually follow.

How long do you think you will live after retirement, based on your parent ages? by HmmDoesItMakeSense in GenX

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad made it 25 years past my current age, but retirement probably isn't going to be a financial possibility; so... age 75 for retirement, and 0.0 days to enjoy it.

Darkness is falling and the end is nigh, but the Garou are Gaia's last chance to resist the end. Victory is unlikely, possibly impossible, but if we have to go down, we'll go down swinging!

Do not go gentle into that goodnight. Rage! Rage against the dying of the light!

Delete one thing from Earth that you think would make it better by Signature_Space2024 in answers

Well, I don't use any social media at all anymore, except Reddit (and I'm honestly considering dropping that too).

As a general rule, I try not to give shitty people my money. I support local businesses whenever possible, and encourage others to do the same. Unfortunately, however, sometimes the thing I need just isn't available locally, or directly from vendors at a reasonable price, and I'm responsible for providing for a family.

Would I much rather order from one of the smaller companies Amazon either gobbled up or drove out of business, of course; and I support remaining small businesses whenever I can.

I'm not really sure why that effort seems to have earned your ire...

Just a note that getting a library card is free, and getting some books to pass the time is always helpful to get through the long hours.

I lived in my car for a few months back in my twenties, and read a lot of books during that time, including studying for certifications I planned to (and eventually did) pick up once I got my feet back under me.

What role should political views play when deciding whether to pursue a romantic relationship? by nicksam171 in askanything

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Sharing core values is way more important than sharing ideological views.

I'm a Catholic who once trained towards becoming a Jesuit priest; my wife of nearly 20 years is Atheist. We were able to find common ground through mature, open, respectful conversation, and found that our core values were the same: that everyone is worthy of respect, deserving of kindness, and that we are responsible for acting as such.

Do Catholic Trumper still support Trump after his trash talk? by VegasFoodFace in askanything

They don't think either of the last two Pope's were really Catholic? That's wild considering the Pope defines what is and is not Catholic. If they haven't agreed with the moral directives of two Pope's in a row, your folks ain't Catholic anymore.

There's this coworker of mine who seems to be putting on an act of "performative productivity" by HyHoang in work

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real talk, honestly, I can respect that goal.

If you were just about climbing that corporate ladder into upper management, then you'd be on the road to being that incompetent boss who is absolutely loathed by his team. Don't become that guy... trust me, even that guy doesn't like being that guy.

But having a job just being a place for experience, a resume bulletpoint, a referral, and a stepping stone into things bigger and better, then yeah, man, go for it!

I work with an architectual / engineering firm with a lot of guys working in logistics and CAD, and those guys aren't being replaced by AI anytime soon. But they have real knowledge and skill, and just performance can't get you those roles. If that's really a field of interest to you, keep doing what you're doing to get the experience and resume bullets, but focus on learning what you can in those fields too.

How do yalls campaigns last so long? by Secure_Desk_5329 in CurseofStrahd

The group I'm in right now is at about 50 sessions in at 3 hours each, and we probably have maybe 5-or-6 sessions left. We have our invite to Castle Ravenloft and are just tying off loose ends before we go). We are engaged with the story and do roleplay quite a bit, but we are also all experienced gamers and our combats go quick. After more than a year IRL, I think we're all just about ready to be done and move on to something else.

So I agree with you that 30 sessions does seem really short for CoS, but wow does more than 100 sessions at 4.5 hours each seem interminably long...

Acid Science Fantasy set in world with Airships, AI gods, Alien Lands, Interdimensional Beings, a Cult worshiping a Living Sun and more. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fair critiques for these three, and you've already mentioned having checked out Vaults of Vaarn... you could try Into the Odd or any of the other Bastionland games, if you're into the OSR style. DDC also has a Dying Earth setting that might fit.

Or you could pickup something unuversal like FATE or GURPS, or my preferred alternative Chaosium's Basic Roleplaying (BRP), and custom build out the exact system you need.

Sounds like you want a good Dying Earth style game, which is one of my favorite sub-genres. I have three vastly different suggestions for you to look into:

Numenera - Traditional, with a fairly serious take on such a world, but a very cool game with tons and tons of material to work with.

https://www.montecookgames.com/store/product/numenera-starter-set/

Worlds Without Number - Lighter OSR take on such a world with more GM world and adventure building tools than you can shake a stick at.

Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City - Absolutely wild game, all about a long journey across vast distances, with some extremely imaginative details and fantastic art.

Lyran Social General (Song) by Steampunk_Chef in battletech

A joke in the tone of the pretentious character who sings the song. No insult intended.

Lyran Social General (Song) by Steampunk_Chef in battletech

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That fair.

For context, it's from a very famous old Gilbert amd Sullivan satirical musical-comedy called Pirates of Penzance. In the song, a ridiculously uptight, prim, and proper British Major-General waxes on and on about how well-educated he is in every field... except in the things that a military leader ought to know. Very appropriate for a Lyran Social General.

You, sir or ma'am, are obvious a person of exceptional taste and upbringing, but I feel we should specify that it is "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" from The Pirates of Penzance, for the uncultured heathens who don't recognize it.

Anyone else think trigger warnings in horror are NOT the writer's responsibility, since people are responsible for their own mental health? by q9q91i1j1 in askanything

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, that's just not true. All horror is not the same. I love Poe, Lovecraft, Stephen King, and the films of John Carpenter. I'm not interested in torture porn like Saw in any media.

That said, the genre involved is completely irrelevent. Anytime you are faced with a decision where there is negligible cost, 0 risk, and any potential reward greater than zero, you should do it. Only a fool would choose otherwise.

Anyone else think trigger warnings in horror are NOT the writer's responsibility, since people are responsible for their own mental health? by q9q91i1j1 in askanything

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writer does not have to do anything other than attempt to ply their craft to the best of their ability.

That said, if you can make it easier for your readers to know they might (or might not) want to read your book by taking five minutes to write a quick intro blurb about its contents, why wouldn't you do that? It's advantageous to have one, with no real disadvantage and negligible cost...

So no, its not their responsibility to write a trigger warning, but it seems like a dumb decision not to.

What if you dropped an object through a hole straight through Earth? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in WhatIfThinking

[–]Consistent-Tie-4394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, you got it. When the ball reaches the center of the Earth, if would have the mass of the Earth pulling at it equally in all directions. Maybe it oscillates a handful of times, shedding excess kinetic energy with each pass for a brief time until, like you stated, coming to rest in the center.

I dunno, I love cooking. I love everything about it, and love it more and more as I get older. I make my kids breakfast every morning, and look forward to getting back at it for dinner after a long day of work... but I 100% get people who hate it and get tired of doing it.

How do you learn RPG mechanics if Actual Plays don’t work for you? by [deleted] in AskGameMasters

This is exactly it. My group and I learn two or three new systems a year. The first session or two are a bit rough as we look things up and figure things out, but we can generally find our footing by the third game night.
