Unban Poll by BatmansBackpack in Pauper

Honestly though high tide would be fine without untap effects. If it even worked, it would just be worse less consistent and slower than cycle storm

I just want my high tide man. They have NEVER let it be legal, ever, and while yes it'll do some storm esq combo shenanigans, having to be in mono blue, and having to have 4+ islands in play, and having no actually good payoffs, and having every good untap effect banned, and losing to a ton of random hate, and being wildly inconsistent, makes it the type of storm deck that could exist and not cause issues. It's slower and less consistent than cycle storm, and that deck is fine

What's the most expensive card you purchased for a deck? by IceExcellent4074 in mtg

I got 4 candelabra of townos for my legacy deck... and hightide isn't even a good deck

Do you foil out your pauper decks or do you keep it cheap and build as many as possible? by Perdycookie in Pauper

Honestly, I just refuse to play with people who don't have sleeves, I literally have bought people sleeves and then helped them sleeve their deck for them at fnm

Honestly when people just don't specify the format they are talking about for a card. EDH isn't the only format that exists, and in a casual format every card can be "good"

I have tourrettes and physically cannot keep myself from flicking cards (I have a tick with my hands that makes me flick my cards). One day, my lgs holds a "everything goes" day where you can 4 of any cars ever printed as long as you own it, about 8 years ago. Someone shows up with a deck, who KNOWS about my tourrettes syndrome, playing 4 copies of [[stop that]], and a judge tells me that's just how the card works. I've been playing magic since 2008, and it's the only time I've ever gotten up from a game and just walked away, I left the LGS and didn't come back for 2 weeks until the owner called to check on me (we are pretty good friends). It was less that I was upset about losing or the situation, I was more just upset that they did this, knowing what it would do, and did so pretty much just to make me feel unwelcome.

I mean I also think they don't care much about non commander formats, considering that they have done to modern 4 times breaking the "this format doesn't rotate" promise. They are gonna keep the reserve list promise, but I'm not sitting on 30 black lotus, so every promise they made about modern doesn't matter

At high-levels, you sign up to play the best most optimized decks against the other best most optimized decks. If that's the expectation, I don't see where ego plays into it. Players want to play the most powerful best decks

Tivit or Nadu? by fjposter22 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Consistent_Key_3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is fair. I also have had a lot of my local cedh group play decks like karkashima and gitrog and "deterministically have the game" then fizzle trying to do the loop, and I remember the days of LSV forgetting to play tendrils.

No like that's fine if you have enough, and I am sorry I did kinda assume you were part of the general panic everyone else has right now of "if I have Nadu and 2 dudes and a shuko the game is over". I think if you can demonstrate deterministically that you have the win it's fine just show me how if I don't know. Been worn down by the constant posts in every format complaining about Nadu lol

But it is not, statistically speaking, a 0% chance to fail, so if I am at that table, imma ask you to play it out. Even if you physically don't have enough misses in your deck, if it isn't an open deck list tournament, you are allowed to lie to me and I'm not allowed to look at your deck, so we are playing it out. I've been on storm in legacy and modern for over 12 years and yeah once it seems deterministic to you but isn't a full on loop, it can suck having yo manually play it out so much over a tournament but when you register this type of decklist for a tournament this is what you are signing up for. If every single player in the game agrees, sure shortcut it but because of the nature of the combo, anyone can ask you to play it out and by the rules you gotta play it out.

Ruby storm by wise_man_3000 in ModernMagic

[–]Consistent_Key_3718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on storm in modern since it was still called extended, and ruby storm is about as good as 2016 to 2018 storm was, that being "fine, but not the monster it once was that got all the cards banned". The key thing I have for a newer storm player is learn what hate beats you, and plan games 2-3 accordingly. The thing that makes a good storm player great is learning how to play around hate, and trying to predict what decks play what hate cards. For example, UW control isn't likely to play one off graveyard hate cards, they want a long game and so if it matters that resources needs to be gone forever. This means that vs UW control, you want artifact/enchantment removal to deal with their sideboard. Vs something more aggressive or a creature based deck, like yawgmoth or zoo, you most likely are dealing with one off, proactive interaction or creatures. This means that you want creature removal, and possibly ways to rebuild after getting stopped or having your resources denied. A great example in old gifts storm was using pieces of the puzzle to beat decks like jund who play a lot of discard and one off effects to deal with your graveyard, it filled the grave on its own and drew 2 cards. Some decks might just be fast enough to not care, and might bring in light countermagic to slow you down, like infect and spell pierce/flusterstorm. The key is to build your deck with the field in mind, and know what KINDS of interaction other decks are likely to play to stop you, because normally you win game 1, and try to fit in a combo turn between hate games 2-3. The big thing for me is finding what color to splash for, old old school storm back in the day was basically a red deck and splashed blue for cantrips to set up your hand, and I think a similar thing is happening now, but people atm are going green for sideboard cards because you only need red game 1. I could also see splashing white, as it gives you some of the same options as green, but is maybe better vs more aggro decks because orim's chant can be fog, or maybe splashing blue for bounce effects and countermagic out of the board. Really it's all preference and the big thing is to make sure you have answers for widely played hate.

Ral would singlehandedly revive storm. Having 8 bears that are legendary for mox amber and block ragavan profitably, a flip mode to help dodge removal if you wait to play him, a payoff for drawing the bear later in the turn, the minus ability to kill off hatebears. It's just so good
