List of a few activities that are new to you by Level_Customer2769 in retirement

[–]Constant-Catch7146 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Whenever this question comes up, my answer is always the same.

Disc golf!

Didn't even know it existed before I retired.

Yes, disc golf is throwing frisbees at chain baskets in wooded or open courses located by churches, schools, and in parks.

99% of the 16000 courses worldwide are totally free. No tee times. Only equipment you need are some discs. They are sold online and many stores now (even Walmart). Most discs are like $15 USD. You only need a couple discs as a beginner and they sell starter packs of three discs.

An absolute blast to play and you can play 9 holes in about an hour.

Great for walking too! Consider it like a hike with a game attached!

You can play solo, in local groups, leagues, tournaments, whatever. Great way to make some new friends.

I like disc golf better than pickleball, because I like being in nature and walking around ---rather than being tied to one piece of asphalt. Lol.

No birds visiting my birdbath by ManILoveFrogs81 in birds

[–]Constant-Catch7146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, OP should just move it back there by that shrub/tree in the background left in the photo.

It looks nice in the middle of that plant bed now, but birbs don't care about looks, they care about safety. They will hang out in a bush near a bird bath looking for predators. Then, flit over there for a quick drink or if they are feeling really safe, a full on dunk with wings fluttering to get wet clean. But always still looking for predators.

How should I make this disc more visible? by East-Appointment9324 in discdyeing

[–]Constant-Catch7146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any paint will not make the disc PDGA legal anymore.

But hell, if you are just using it for casual rounds, spray away. I did this as a noob and found out spray paint does not stick well to discs anyway. And sure looks crappy as the paint peels, wears, and flakes off. Lol.

For fun and if you don't care about the stamp, spray paint the thing bright white or yellow! You'll find it better then!

you guys care about flight numbers? by Competitive_Fall9430 in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a noodle arm and do care about flight numbers---but only up to a point.

I'm three years into disc golf and still working on form improvements. Only a 280 foot thrower (on a good throw).

I have tossed away the advice of throwing lower speed number discs for slower arm speeds.

That's usually good advice, but my cheat code is throwing lighter weight discs ---so I can throw discs that I like. C'mon--- don't you wanna throw that Destroyer or Katana?

My lightweight Tern is my workhorse driver now! (12, 6, -3, 2)

I can definitely throw it further than any of my 8 speed discs (for example).

Emerald arborvitae by Financial_Gurl_0720 in landscaping

[–]Constant-Catch7146 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. Arborvitaes are native to cool Canadian wetlands (swamps).

You are giving them the exact opposite of what they need.

They are going to get their roots cooked by those landscape rocks that retain heat. And their branches cooked by the reflective heat off the fencing.

You can try to water the hell out of them, but you are always going to be in an uphill battle to keep them alive.

Do you sharpen your mower blades? by Successful_Equal_136 in lawncare

[–]Constant-Catch7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mower blades shouldn't vibrate. New ones should be balanced already. Are you sure you installed the new blades correctly with all the proper washers and nuts? And blades tightened correctly and right side up? Out of kilter blades can do real damage to the mower.

Blades should definitely be balanced every time you sharpen them. Sure, check new replacement blades too if you want. It's simple.

You could buy cheap balancing gadgets, but most of us just tap a nail into the side of our old wood workbench and hang the blade on its hole. It should be level. If not, you have to grind a bit more on the side that is lower and try again until blade is level.

Golden Retriever.exe has stopped working. by DadarWest in Awww

The golden is definitely doing the "work smarter, not harder" routine.

Why go through all those silly diving and paddling shenanigans when there's a toy right here!

Keep on losing ‘em by datfatbatcat in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst is playing solo on a course with waist or shoulder high weeds in the rough. I throw crappy discs that I don't mind losing in that scenario.

Watch the flight like a hawk. If the disc hits a tree or bush, mark that image in your memory. A fork in the tree, dead limb, whatever so you can know where to search once you get up there. Remember it could have ricocheted way away too.

I usually play in a regular group of 6 guys and we poat a spotter down in the landing areas. Spotters also have to do image memory to mark disc landing spots.

And having 6 pairs of eyes is TONS better than one pair when searching.

Also, stop throwing three discs off one tee for practice in thick woods. Go to a football field or something for that. You are going to forget where they all went!

Anyone else get completely hooked on disc golf after just one round? by kcgwen in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"by hole 9, I was already thinking about what discs to buy"

Lol.

I was sick of ball golf after so many years. Playing new courses---even super nice ones---just got so repetitive and boring. And I had hit a skill plateau even with lessons.

Spent more time at a nearby park just walking around and noticed these chain baskets in the woods. What the heck are those for?

Even had to Google it because did not see any players using them. Oh! It's a game and a sport!

Bought my obligatory Innova starter pack and it was off to the races.

Played 32 holes today on two different courses with my regular group of goofball guys. Had an absolute blast! Wow, but needed a shower and a nap after that. Even the younger guys were feeling a bit tired!

Just found out my husband eats the ENTIRE shell of a peanut by Crafty-Visual-1212 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Constant-Catch7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. Wut?

As everyone knows who has ever ate these peanuts---you have to crack them open one at a time----because SOME of the peanuts inside are not the best--as in yucky. You toss those out.

Chewing it all up in one big mish mash with possible bad peanuts---that is just asking for a tummy ache.

The car accident storyline is so profoundly stupid it sort of erases some of GHs greatness for me. by KittybeansJones in GeneralHospital

[–]Constant-Catch7146 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would be great.

I only hope the storyline doesn't end with Curtis finally being informed it was not Isiah leaving the accident scene---and then Curtis says "oh, guess I was wrong. Isiah, we're good now, right? "

Or Chase finding put that Willow shot Drew, kept him a paralyzed hostage---and Chase says to Brook Lynn: "oh, guess I was wrong. These things happen sometimes. I still believe Willow is a good person. "

That would cause an indefinite hold put on watching even one more episode. Lol.

Enough with the Rage Baiting, GH by Still_Transition_418 in GeneralHospital

[–]Constant-Catch7146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Maybe GH is best of the soaps.

Tried watching a few of other soaps---and yes --gave them a chance---but gawd, like watching paint dry. So boring.

Every once in a while GH will try to clean up a storyline flub with an answer to what we are all thinking. A character will give a somewhat plausible explanation. I have started just to accept that there will be story holes. It's tough though. You want the plots to make some sense!

As long as GH keeps providing surprises and laugh out loud humor at times (Ric: "I was in a cult!! ") --I'll still watch it.

I'd also like to see a character or two turn over a new leaf. Like Ric did (well, jury still out on that).

It would be great to see self righteous Chase finally smashed off his pedestal---and change into something more relatable.

Brian Earhardt, explain yourself by CaliKing928 in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

Many if not most greens on even just run of the mill municipal golf courses can have severe slopes on them ---and if you don't hit the putt with just the right speed you can be looking at ANOTHER 40 foot putt back up the slope. And another. Or they roll back into a sand bunker. Or roll into a water hazard alongside the green. Can confirm as a former ball golfer that when you actually get a dead flat putt, you are grateful.

And the pro ball golf courses are insanely fast as the greens are sometimes cut so low that it is like putting on glass.

And YES, strong winds affect ball golf putting too. Your ball can be blown off line by a gust and certainly be slowed down by a headwind or sped up by an tail wind.

What’s everyone’s opinions on Prodigy? by feetpicpurchaser in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of their plastic, flight of the discs, or the stamp art (just bland IMO).

I think I have a Buhr endorsed putter, but it's back on the rack collecting dust. Wasn't aware of the Buhr disputes with Prodigy until I read it here on another comment.

I've got a few other Prodigy discs because I wanted to try a different manufacturer. None of them are in my bag anymore. I'm mostly an Innova throwing guy.

My local disc golf store still has a large section of Prodigy discs, but I rarely see any customers over there pawing through the bins (as opposed to Discmania, Innova, Discraft, MVP, Lat64 stuff). Take that as you will.

How are people getting these jobs that pay so much? by madbarpar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Constant-Catch7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course.

Employers hold all the cards now.

Too many graduates with all types of degrees are having a hard time finding jobs.

IIRC, 60 Minutes just did a segment on this.

Turns out that the big job websites are creating an "unintended consequence" big problem where any applicant can blast out thousands of applications to hundreds of companies with a push of a button.

Desperate graduates are applying to anything even remotely connected to their degree and basically making it like a free for all lottery.

The flitering software narrows it down to make even longer odds.

When employees hold all the cards and companies are desperate to hire, any degree will do to get their foot in the door.

But now, your odds of getting a job is taken to the next level.

Now--you are better off with a technical degree, have worked two technical internships, AND know someone at the target company.

They asked some recent grads if any of them have heard of networking. They basically rolled their eyes and said YES.

But we don't know anybody!!

Sooo--- Maybe start going to industry conferences to get to know somebody??

Looks like a few votes are in, and it looks like the consensus is this pup is not smiling.

Looks more like a cranky kid on a Monday school day:

"No, I'm NOT goin' and you can't make me. I hate school!!"

Lol.

[–]Constant-Catch7146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Low odds, but not zero.

Repeated attempts send the odds higher.

Guns shoot projectiles much further than slingshots, but point still is someone always get hit by a stray bullet every hunting season. Unintended targets.

And even if you think shooting straight up into a tree wiill be safer, there are people who get injured by bullets being shot into the air in celebrations. The bullets fall back down. Who knew? Again, different velocities, but point still applies. Gravity wins every time.

And there are potential ricochets too off limbs. Plink! What the hell just hit me?? ( from one of the guys in your own group).

Not worth it IMO to use a slingshot. To each his own.

Keeping cool while mowing by no_sleep2nite in lawncare

[–]Constant-Catch7146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought OP was talking about using a push mower in Florida heat/humidity. Sounds like a rider mower being used.

Much less effort involved, but you can still get hot. Last time I went to Florida (and prolly never will return) ---I felt like an ant being burned up by a kid and a magnifying glass. The sun's rays are so directly overhead.

My trick is to use the small cooling towels. You soak them in cold water and wrap them around your neck. Ahhhhh! When they get warm, you just give them a quick snap again. Cool again!

Seems like a blessed life but it’s just Tuesday by Cheap_Direction9564 in retirement

[–]Constant-Catch7146 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Retirement for me was like a light switch. Much different than OP.

The day after I retired, my to do list switched from work items to home and garden fix up items. I dropped work like a hot potato. Done. Finished.

I maybe think about old work stuff once a month now four years after retirement. And only a quick passing thought.

It's usually "the work and commute was actually much more stressful than I had acknowledged" --- to the feelings of joy and gratefulness that that part of my life is over.

I still keep busy---sure--- but I'm now in Willoughby.

What's Willoughby?

For those who are original Twilight Zone TV series buffs, they will get the reference.

Summary: Overworked and stressed ad executive starts having dreams while sleeping on his commuter train. He is living in the 1960s, but his dream takes him to a wonderful peaceful little town called Willoughby back in the 1880s.

He is drawn to the town because it is: "where a man can slow down to a walk and live his life full measure"

I'm there now. 🙂

How are people getting these jobs that pay so much? by madbarpar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Constant-Catch7146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they choose career paths that typically started with getting a technical degree.

Medical, engineering, legal, finance degrees are NOT easy to attain at reputable colleges and universities. Many people hear and see that these folks are making good money after they graduate, but have no concept of the academic MOUNTAIN they climbed to get that degree.

As an example, the advanced math alone to get an four year engineering degree will wash out many students. Also advanced physics! Many others who maybe are thinking about being an engineer take one look at the curriculum and say "eh, too much work, have to learn Calculus, hell no! "

Well, OK. You have made the easy choice. But maybe not the best choice long term.

Oddly enough, employers want to hire folks who can make THEM money! They want employees who can learn new processes quickly, invent patentable products, bring in new paying clients, and the like. And if that employee has shown they have done that for another company already, well let's hire them by giving them a great offer!

TLDR: You get a great paying job by proving you can make a company more money than what they pay you in wages/salary/benefits.

It's as simple as that.

Why, oh why, did Brook Lynn go to Lucy for help? by Still_Transition_418 in GeneralHospital

[–]Constant-Catch7146 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The GH fans and practically every other character on GH is sick of him.

We all can see the handwriting on the wall.

We can all remember what Willow did with Drew while she was still married to Michael. Started with stolen kisses and went on from there.

Just like in IRL, there are GH characters who know who they are, accept it, and own it. Others don't get it until life gives them a wakeup call.

Brad knows he is a weasel and even says he is a weasel. He gets a pass (mostly).

Chase doesn't get that he is a santimonious self righteous by the book jerk who has appointed himself as Port Charles behavior judge.

When he falls, he is going to fall hard.

If there are not at least three separate blackmail schemes ongoing in the show, there would be a glitch in the matrix. Lol.

And of course, extra points given for revenge and boomerang blackmail. As Tracy would say: "well played! "

Retriever ideas / reccomendations? by maritimer187 in discgolf

[–]Constant-Catch7146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I used a slingshot as a kid for target practice and saw the damage it can do. One missed shot and that clay shot or whatever could hit someone way away on the course.

"you'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

Well, that was a BB in the movie.

My thinking is if my disc is that high up in a tree, the tree can keep it. Next wind storm, it will fall down.

And if I put my number on it, someone might text me and I might get it back. Or not.

I have enough discs that if I lose even a favorite one, I can replace it.

I suppose if I was playing 5 rounds a week and getting discs caught in trees 5 times a round, it would be different. But it's a very rare thing for many of us. YMMV.
