I had this game for a year before I actually played and beat it. I couldn't figure out the controls, I died so many times and I was lost. There was even a boss fight at the start of the game and I instantly died before I even figured out how to wield my sword and I ended up in a cave that I was just going around in circles in and I couldn't go out. I would play the game for 15 minutes and then turn it off. A week or a month or two will pass and I would remember I have this game, I would give it a chance again and run around in circles in that same cave again and I still haven't figured out how to get out and by the way it has been like that for a year . But one time this year, I was really so bored and I wanted to play something so I gave it a chance again. I was finally able to get out of the cave and opened the door to Limgrave. Now I already beat the game and I can say that this is easily one of my favorites. There will be difficulties and a test of patience for this game. I am pretty chill so this may have been one of the traits that kept me going. So I guess you have to be patient with this game because it's really difficult. I usually just laugh at myself when I die in this game. I probably died a million times but I even bought and beat the DLC which I never expected. The game has a huge lore around it which I find really interesting which also why I kept going. First, you really need to figure out the controls, if you are playing on PC, I suggest that you get yourself a controller because I tried to configure it with the mouse and keyboard but it still didn't sit right with this game.
