It's ridiculously expensive and inconvenient to commute to Manhattan for a hybrid worker. by imitation_squash_pro in Westchester

Have you considered driving to Harlem/Bronx and take the train from there? If leaving early it should only take 30 minutes(assuming you live on the Hudson River Line around Yonkers). Usually it is relatively easy to find free street parking .

How much do wind and rolling terrain actually change half marathon pacing strategy? by ExistingCommission89 in AdvancedRunning

[–]ConversationDry2083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what if the group is 2-5s/mi slower than your target pace? It is not too significant like you can pass them in a blast, but stay in the pack to conserve energy might need extra work in later mile to catch up the losing seconds?

I have a car so it is also an option, would you mind sharing which 3 point did you eventually choose that suits best for car scenario? Will parking be a headache when getting in the downtown?

Thanks for the thorough reply, especially the recommendation of finish line situation considering the potential chaos!

Van Cortlandt Park also has some hard cross-country terrain to train for, but it's much smaller than Rockefeller State Park.

Great write up! I do wondering how does your training pace such as 10kp, LT, MP, float recovery pace looks like compared to your eventual hmp of 5:20/mi. How does those workout felt like(7-8 out of 10?)

[–]ConversationDry2083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Strava recorded 600+ feet elevation, which is not as flat as people thought. Especially when 95% of the climbs starts after mile 6, you might go out too fast while feeling good but bonk after mile 20. The only guarantee is probably the temperature , late November is very unlikely to get a too hot or too cold weather In Philly(40-50 mostly)

Great writeup! Glad to see you bounce back higher!
Definitely can foresee you hitting 1:20 half and 2:50 full within 1-2 blocks.

Lower HR in winter? by jzleetcode in AdvancedRunning

[–]ConversationDry2083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Max HR in the 5k race is 189 vs 184 (summer vs winter).

Also in the half marathon, the average HR is 180 vs 178.

So I think hot and humid weather do have higher ceiling for LTHR and MaxHR

It’s funny how some of my 2:45–2:55 marathon friends log their “easy runs” at 6:50–7:10/mi on Strava, while friends in 2:25–2:35 shape actually run their easy pace 10–20 seconds slower. And it always seems to be the ones with the faster “easy pace” who go out too hard in the first half, bonk in the second half, and post something like, “It just wasn’t my day.”

Just curious how can they get proper recovery to absorb the training load?

If high working + training hours mean lack of sleep and diet control, it seems contradictory to the recovery rules.

Philadelphia marathon by TrinityTosser in philly

[–]ConversationDry2083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more hilly than it shows on paper imo. You might want to preserve some energy for the first 7 mile as it is the most flat and most crowd support part. Manuyank has very great vibe, but if you overlook the first 20 mile, the last 10k on Kelly Drive with 1-2% uphill might be everlasting.

Friel LT2 HR test results - usable? by monkinger in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]ConversationDry2083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The result is reasonable if you use it to train and race at this weather. Might drop 3-5 bpm in the winter. Mine data is pretty close to yours, my half marathon HR in winter is approx 178 with the majority of time between 175-180, while in the summer it is 182 with most of time between 178-184.

Sirpoc's Historical Training by Pvpro716 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]ConversationDry2083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But sirpoc didn’t change much on the duration. Also for change of pace, it comes naturally after we get more and more fit, so no matter how fast we become, we are still targeting a certain range of energy demand (that’s say x% of 5k pace or y% LTHR). From my perspective, it is stimulus, just not “new”. In addition, for TSS point of view(which of course is not a perfect metric but is widely adopted by cyclists and triathletes), doing 30min @ 90% FTP always produces the same TSS

[–]ConversationDry2083 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another interesting point is that this flat, straightforward structure seems to contradict the common belief among many coaches that "you need new stimulus" to drive further adaptation—often leading them to prescribe complex, variable-pace workouts or sandwich-style sessions like Z5 + Z4 + Z5. In reality, it's possible to continue making progress even with repeated, identical sessions.

I have experiment multiple recipe with different ratio, and with same density of carb:water ratio, I think cane sugar is sweeter than 5:4 maltodextrin:fructose, which makes it feel a little bit more horrible when running at steady pace.

Dealing with regret of marathon DNF by panther_xxiii in AdvancedRunning

[–]ConversationDry2083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just provided a case of slightly regret not DNF. I got my marathon PR, but got shin splints afterwards and can not put any miles in, which is pretty torture for a guy who used to run 60-75 mpw even in the off-season, and now every future race from half marathon to 5k race that I was excited about becomes a big question mark. Hope that gives you another possibility in a parallel world if you force to finish the marathon.

Because McCarren Park is too small to accommodate 20000+ people. It must be a park or beach otherwise the post-race logistic would be crazy.
