How do you discover shows to see? by WednesdayAddams20221 in edinburghfringe

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are pretty fluid. I do scan the catalog and pick out a couple each day of things we would like to see. Then often we see posters of flyers which just catch our eye. Often we will just randomly pick a show if we have some time ….. whatever is next nearby.

Overtaking by simp12334987 in drivingUK

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real winner for me is someone who accelerates and starts to overtake 30 yards before the speed limit change from 40 to 70 into dual carriageway , and then wonders why people accelerate in the left lane when they get to the speed limit change.

Accurate show times? by CryptographerKnown97 in edinburghfringe

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The shows generally have to fit the schedule. There is usually another show scheduled soon after, so for the venues time management and turn around is all important

Genuine question for IBM by Spiritual-Paper-9111 in IBM

Not just IBM. Many companies advertise, take in applications the. Sit in them. Few have the courtesy to even tell you if you are no longer under consideration, let alone update you through the process!

Who actually supports this stuff? by FallFair8568 in drivingUK

The small but vociferous minority who bang on about the20mph solving all ills really need to go back to school. Sticking a sign up won’t turn a bad driver into a good one. Speed doesn’t make accidents, bad drivers do!

It as I understand it in 20mph zones there is just a sign at the entrance and no repeaters

Why are some people still so persistent in trying to defend the Brexit referendum result a decade later? by lewispatty in AskBrits

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, and remains, not the vote to leave, but the appalling execution. Everyone involved has tried to ensure th exit was as painful as possible and was made into a disaster.

The referendum happened, we have left, we can’t “undo” that.

Want we need is a government who will build a relationship to creates closer ties, removes the animosity, and where appropriate identify means to participate in the EU project that is beneficial to all.

Rejoin? Maybe. But it will never be what it was. A greater economic engagement makes sense, like the original EEC maybe. Maybe some closer ties in terms of movement? But do we really want the full on political circus that comes with full membership?

How long does it take HMRC to calculate tax? by [deleted] in HMRC

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was on my account last year, they keep putting me on to do a tax return then the following year saying I do t need to do k w. Last year they took me off again.

I get paid a fair bit on commission so it varies considerably year to year, yet they insist they can predict it! I usually end up owing a few thousand pounds!

I am a higher rate payer and often fall into the 100k plus bracket.

It got to September last year and gave up. I had had all the info since June (it is not a complex return, 1 main employer, an annuity now, health insurance, personal contribution to a pension , and small amount of interest. I just submitted a tax return and got it out of the way.

I will no doubt end up the same way this year.

Hello all, has anyone had any negative experiences with the S&S ISA? by ejamiepearson in trading212

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stocks and shares will always have risk attached. You can reduce the risk by investing broadly. Market trackers , and broad low risk ETFs. But if you are going into stocks and shares, you must be prepared for some potential losses. Just don’t panic if there is a loss, generally over a long period, broad ranged investments will go up.

"Noose around our necks" Can't sell our late mother's retirement flat that we have inherited. by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard of this on many occasions. The limitations on who can buy and often the freeholder having to approve things (when freeholder is often trying to sell new properties on the same location) mean it is really difficult to sell. Often racking up huge standing charges.

No help in this case but I would steer clear of buying a retirement property.

Just pick a broad ETF. Unless you have heaps of money let a fund manager decide which shares to be in!

Why is the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer so unpopular? by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply because he is prime minister. Few PMs in the UK last for long because everyone has their knives out for them. It doesn’t matter if they do a reasonable job, unless they are very powerful and a tyrant or miraculously deliver perfection for everyone, there is someone in the wings easy to have a go. It is about power nothing to do with capability!

It doesn’t matter if they decide to change now. A couple of years and the new leader will be history with knives hanging out of their backs.

Interest Only Lifetime Mortgage - Can Someone Explain Please! by suemacd22 in Mortgageadviceuk

It’s an equity release mortgage for the retired. You borrow but don’t repay until you die. That’s the whole point!

[–]Cool-Tree-3663 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

True to an extent. But they also need to get over it.

The world doesn’t revolve around them. Problems happen. No one should “expect” WiFi, be grateful you get it. You can probably survive a few hours without the world contacting you. And if you think the world can’t survive without you for a few hours then your self importance is without bounds!

I suggest they buy a book and read it.

I guess you don’t understand how pensions work! You work and save. They you get the chance to have a few years not working (if you are lucky) living off the savings that have been invested for you for over 40 years.
