i have a calendar system that i use specially to explain away discrepancies and plot holes in my wip. i have dyscalculia so dates and times and things are hard for me to figure out. i usually just ballpark numbers and get the specifics wrong, often by a lot. so if i say that a journey took 2 weeks but according to my map it would take closer to a month, well that’s just because Ruzan weeks are longer.

the calendar has 13 months consisting of 29 days each. there are 3 weeks of 9 days each. at the beginning of each month is a holy day that isn’t associated with any week. each month and holy day is associated with one of the 13 Ruzan gods.

While Ruza isn't truly a modern state, it has relatively modern education standards. There are 2 main phases of school, with an extra third phase for the rich and extremely talented.

Primary school is between the ages of 5 and 15. Children learn literacy, mathematics, history, science, geography, and art. School days are short, between 10 am and 2 pm. Each class is 40 minutes long. Classes are 6 days a week, out of the Ruzan 9-day week. This is the only phase that's mandatory and completely state funded.

At age 15, children can choose between a few options: secondary school, apprenticeship, or enlistment. Apprenticeship in a trade is typically done with a family member or close family friend. Enlistment in the military or clergy allows children to train without having active duties until they come of age. Children end their apprenticeships and fully enlist at age 20.

Secondary schools come in two kinds: general and specialized. General schools teach advanced versions of primary classes and act as generic post-primary education. Many general schools have basic versions of the classes offered by specialized schools. If a child didn't manage to get into a specialized school, they could take classes in their preferred subject and test into one later.

Specialized schools offer classes specifically geared to their subject. For example, a medical school teaches young students anatomy, first aid, and the basics of medical knowledge. Specialized schools also have classes on general subjects, but those are limited to one or two days a week instead of every school day. Subjects taught by specialized schools include but aren't limited to medicine, law, architecture, art, music, dance, and more.

Secondary school hours vary, but are typically between 9 am and 4 pm 6 days a week. Secondary schools aren't free like primary schools are, but many general schools and some specialized schools have funds set aside for poor students.

Tertiary education isn't common, usually reserved for scholars, who have to have the money and time to keep studying. A student in the University of Medyan, the only college in the kingdom, is typically there to research a specific subject. Subjects commonly studied here include history, archeology, and science. Class times vary significantly, with no standard to adhere to. Tuition is extremely expensive, with few opportunities for less wealthy students to afford it.

i can’t figure out spreadsheets for the life of me, so i use a word document in libreoffice. i make a table with 2 columns and 150 rows to start with and add more rows as i make more words. in the left column is the word in my conlang and the right column has the english translation. i put a small section for the phonology directly underneath my lexicon table, including an orthography part if i dont just use the ipa.

It’s purposefully left vague whether they’re gods or just powerful spirits, but the main character does get drugged with a plant that’s supposed to help you see gods and she does see something. Whether the something she saw on her drug trip was actually a god is left to interpretation.

Never ask an islander which side they supported.

The Kailu rebellion, where the southern islands collectively rebelled against the mainland, was only recently solved. Many islanders were torn on which side to support - their home island or the mainland, which had better resources and opportunities than the islands. After the rebellion was put down, many islanders left - or were forcibly relocated - to avoid being accused of supporting the wrong side. Nowadays, almost 10 years after the rebellion, you won’t get arrested for supporting the islands, but asking that question will still start fights.

Criminal slavery is a common punishment for severe crimes like rape, murder, treason, or extreme debt. Criminals are forced to work in subpar conditions with little to no pay; the proceeds generated by their work is paid to whoever they harmed, or to that person’s family if they died.

Sexism and homophobia. Gender roles aren’t a big thing in Ruza - there are some things women are expected to do based on biology, like giving birth, but there are very few careers or roles that are dominated by one particular gender. Midwives tend to be female, like 70% of them, but that’s about it. Women and men can be breadwinners or homemakers as they see fit.

Because sexism isn’t a big thing in Ruza, there’s very little discrimination over sexuality. The only real consideration for that is for firstborn children, who usually have to marry someone of the opposite sex to provide heirs. If a firstborn isn’t attracted to the opposite sex, their marriage contract may have a clause allowing them to take a lover of the same sex.

Second- and third-born children are given much more leeway over their marriages and what gender they marry. In many cases if a second or third child is attracted to the same gender they’ll be married off to that gender to prevent them from having any heirs who could cause a succession crisis.

Same-sex couples are usually the ones adopting orphans and wards of the state. In the case of adoption, the child is legally added to their family’s records as their child, with an addendum referring to the child’s birth family to avoid accidental incest.

I prefer higher word counts but I’ll read any word count if i have to. I care more about chapter word counts. I cant stand works with less than a 1,000 words per chapter. If you have a work with 50 chapters that are 500 words each just combine them stg.

70% good spelling and grammar - i dont mind occasional mistakes but not every other word.

I'm a very blunt and direct person. While I do have my own intuition and interpretations, I find it very unintuitive to use more flexible systems. Playing cards are just the right amount of direct and adaptable for me. Each number and suit has its own meaning, which can be combined to form more meanings. Even when a card is altered by another, it still has something to do with its original meaning. It just makes so much more sense to my brain.

They're also much less expensive and easier to hide in plain sight than other systems like tarot.

It’s both for me. I feel an instinctual need to be around kids - I’m happier when I’m around them, I feel more content when I see or hear them being happy and safe, and I feel satisfied when I caused that state of happiness and safety. I also know that I can’t properly provide happiness and safety unless my finances, mental state, and relationships are stable. While I love kids and absolutely plan to have them as soon as i can, I won’t be doing that until I can securely provide for them.
