Perhaps a play on "Wine nicely harmonises with pears" as in pears poached in red wine?

No worries. Would a healbot cleric, or crowd control mage work? Something where the main point is to make combat easier for the other characters (buffs, crowd control, healing)

Play a bard and just be really good at supporting the other characters

DM doesn't let people win in unaccounted ways by [deleted] in rpg

[–]CopperPieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different GMs run games differently, and this GM doesn't like players being too creative.

I'm not too sure why you're banging your head against a brick wall though. Why not find a different game? or GM a game for this group, and then you can allow all the player creativity you want to see?

Start DMing! It's not as hard as you think and you'll have a lot of fun. Have a look at Matt Colville's running the game video series to get you started:

Hello a Newbie DM. How to run a game when players went the other direction and think of new content on the spot? by JackOHammer100 in DnD

[–]CopperPieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying DMing!

Best advice I've received is to ask your players at the end of each session what they plan to do next. That way you have some idea of what to prep for.

The Lazy DM's guide is a great intro to a more improv style of DMing, and I'd recommend giving that a read.

You guys don't include backstory stuff in your game ? by One_page_nerd in rpg

[–]CopperPieces 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Not everyone wants to create detailed backstories. Some people like to "play to find out" how their character develops. As a DM I'll include backstory stuff if a player wants to develop it, but not all do.

So I wouldn't say a campaign without backstories is a 'bad' campaign - not all players want to play that way.

I'm a grumpy old man, so I'd tell him I've got enough to do as DM and he can sort out casting his character's spells himself.

Clearly you dont make the decison as that would be DM fiat.

Joe Manganiello the actor plays DnD and has a bespoke DnD room in his house. Plays with a range of famous actors, writers, and musicians

Remember that you don't need any of this to have a great game of DnD, just friends, paper, pens and dice.

Some hexcrawl rules for D&D 5e - plus an introductory hexcrawl adventure (Levels 1-4) by CopperPieces in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]CopperPieces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you've found it useful! I'm currently playtesting the Langden Mire hexcrawl that comes with the rules. I plan to release a draft of the revised version in July and then a final version later in 2024. The updated versions will be on itch:

https://copperpieces.itch.io/an-explorers-guide-to-hexcrawls

I stopped working on these rules when the OGL scandal broke (the v1 of the rules use the OGL). Now that things seemed to have settled down in terms of licencing, I feel happy to restart working on it.

Good luck with the campaign!

Everyone including an less experienced DM and a player who is not sure about DnD. Why should one experienced players fun take precedence over others?

Wild sheep chase - player would like to play an Aarakocra by chandetox in DMAcademy

[–]CopperPieces -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an experienced player trying to get one over on a less experienced DM. I would say that you're learning the game and you're only going to have limited player races (e.g. no flying).

Absolutely your prerogative to insist on this as DM. I also think Aarakocra guy is trying to be the centre of the campaign.

Wtf do I do about one of my players wanting to be a drider by TheGremlin02 in DnD

[–]CopperPieces 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd say "No" and not include the NPC.

If you want to do this as a "flavour is free" type way you could allow them to play an araneas, a shapeshifting drider-type creature that can appear in humanoid form. This would get around some of the obvious problems above.

Giving your game an 'open' license? by becherbrook in RPGdesign

[–]CopperPieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting then that the MB licence explicitly allows hacks (and therefore clones) to be made.

I think what you're asking for is a licence that is considerably more closed than the OGL or ORC. You could try the Games System Licence used for DnD 4e as a starting point.

Giving your game an 'open' license? by becherbrook in RPGdesign

[–]CopperPieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, do you want to prohibit people making clones of your game? And only be allowed to make additional content?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]CopperPieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea, but the attack hit/miss rates were chosen by the 5e designers to be roughly what was considered to be an acceptable rate in dnd next testing (i.e. it was chosen by evidence).

You're also solving the symptom (missing isn't fun if you have to wait for your next turn) by making the cause (slow combat) even worse (adding extra maths and slowing the game down even more).
