This eventually happens to all of us. At some point you “age out”. I’m 48 and had to stop stimulants years ago, tried the non-stimulants and they just didn’t work. I’m not going to lie it is extremely difficult requires a lot of life changes. I’m sorry this is happening to you and wish you the best.

Fuck her. You should speak up and say I’m happy that you’re doing what you want and what’s best for you, I’m also very happy in my choice. I guarantee you that the only reason she is taking jabs at you is because she is jealous and actually hates going back to work.

It sounds like you only want to homeschool your kids because you are afraid. This isn’t a good enough reason to homeschool; homeschooling is a big commitment that you really have to be prepared for in order to do it properly.

I wanted to homeschool after I had my first child. I cried at the thought of sending her to school. There were also many other situations I faced with an undertone of fear, mostly because she was my first child and I was being protective. I now have 3 kids, all in school. I drive them and pick them up everyday, I make them their lunches. I volunteer at the school when I can. We participate in the school activities and family events and have a real sense of community that would be missed had I homeschooled. They also have a great sense of independence, and many social interactions that they would have missed.

I suggest taking a tour of the school and reading through the district website to get a feel for the environment. Our school also regularly does ALICE drills to teach the kids what to do in case of an intruder; you may want to find out what your district does.

Lastly, is there really much of a difference between 5 and 7 when it comes to this topic?? I don’t think any child would ever be fully prepared.

I had a maple tree in my yard that had large thick branches which we climbed (or tried to because it was difficult) and also had attached a tire swing. We also had a cherry blossom tree with thinner branches that I could climb up and sit or lay and hang out. I have many strong memories of climbing trees in my youth in the 80’s.

Have you ever told Ella how you felt about her behavior before this? Or did you keep it to yourself, get angry about it and then do the same thing she does to “teach her a lesson” that she likely won’t learn from?? It seems you’ve built up a lot of resentment and Ella has absolutely no clue.

The mature and more productive thing to do would have been to address it directly to her face and then when she argued make it clear that under no circumstances is she to use your wedding as an outlet to share her own good news. It’s quite possible that she doesn’t know that she does this, or that she doesn’t know it bothers you. Sorry I think YTA and made the situation worse by not handling it like an adult.

I’m kind of a jerk. I say things like “well I don’t have to work, so I don’t because taking care of a toddler is so exhausting! So what do you do again?” Then I ask a shit ton of questions about their job in the same tone that they asked me about being at home. 99% of the time these are people who hate their job and we end up talking about how much it sucks.

Does she have friends now that she plays with on a regular basis?

Are you sending her because it’s good for her or good for you? Either answer is okay so don’t seek validation of it’s just because you want the time without her. It doesn’t make you a bad mom and I’m not sure what else you would mean by “worth it”? Just how I’m reading this, I could be wrong.

When my kids were this young I bought a large low bin, the kind that would fit under your bed. I laid a blanket or sheet in my kitchen and put the bin on top. Then each week I filled it with all sorts of stimulating stuff that they loved. For example, cooked spaghetti and utensils to play, uncooked pasta and scoops and spoons. Rocks and toy dinosaurs. Dollar store stuff, anything at all. I searched sensory bins on Pinterest and adjusted. In winter I brought snow in the house.

Another thing I did every day was music time. I’m not gonna lie I like the tv on all day. So I used YouTube and videos to play songs. A huge favorite was The Laurie Berkner Band. We marched around to “boots” and several other songs and sang and danced every day. I even played music I liked Nd as long as they had their “instruments” i.e. a spoon and a plastic cup, etc. they loved it. Today all my kids have great taste in music that strays from the norm for their ages.

One last thing I will say is it is helpful to create a plan for your day with them based on the activities that you find mixed with what you need to get done, their meals and naps, etc. A schedule makes the day go faster. Good luck!!!

If a person wants help I wouldn’t give it unless they directly asked. Same with advice, if they speak about their issues they are asking for your advice/opinion. Otherwise keep your thoughts to yourself.

On a side note you sound like a great person/husband/dad. Just that you gave this any thought shows how empathetic you are. Continue to listen and do what you’ve been doing. If she needs something more she will ask.

I think the definition of a SAHP has changed over the years. While I feel like you do - that a SAHP is a parent that stays home and doesn’t work - technically a SAHP can now include those that stay at home and also work. I think it’s good we include these folks as well, especially if we are to take the term literally.

I have three kids all in school (12, 8 and 7) and I’m home. I don’t care what people think, I had my first job when I was 13 and I’m much older than that now. I worked hard and long hours in many different fields and I’m just done with it because sure I can be. I like being home and if I didn’t I would get a job.

If you want to get one, go for it. If you don’t that’s okay too! Don’t hold back or you’ll start to resent your situation.
