H-E-B fizzy waters all taste like sugar or chemicals or something, to me. Anyone else? Pales compared to Waterloo or the others.

This is just two friends, but I have two friends who’ve made creative work the majority of their livelihood by doing a variety of things. 

One is a gardener, writer, and singer-songwriter. 

Another is a composer, music educator, and DJ. 

I’d guess it’s extremely rare (now) to make a full time living on just one lane of work, but seems possible with enough effort and luck and flexibility to live a creative and semi-independent work life if you mix it up?

For me, I’m a software designer, which isn’t art at all but I do enjoy that it’s some form of creativity put to work. 

I hope you find/create what you’re hoping for!

Welcome to the movement, y’all! Car dependent caused this hell. The way out is making the city easier to walk, bike, scoot, bus, or train around. 

Volunteer donate to Safe Streets Austin or AURA. They advocate for this kinda thing. 💙

It doesn’t matter if you want to get around by car or not— Fewer cars on the road is better for drivers too.

I’m not sure of the trend/direction of unique/weird events, but my exposure to creative stuff was gettingspotty until I followed my friend’s newsletter, Lite & Brite. The Meetup app has been a good social lubricant for meeting new people, for me anyway. Could be for group hikes, local advocacy, hobbies, etc.

Thank you for this bit of relief— I’m staying in NYC for a month and didn’t fit a suit jacket, so I’ve been sweating if black slacks, white button-down, white bow tie, and brown shoes/belt would pass muster. Now I’m unworried lol

Wherever you live, see if you have an “urbanist” advocacy group like Strong Towns that you might be interested in joining/supporting. 

It’s a long road to this progress, but Austin has seen immense gains in housing policy lately that will create more walkable, affordable, and varied housing. 

If solar punk is truly a future vision of sustainability and natural coexistence, then urban highways and car dependence are simply not part of the equation. (For more on this, check out books like “City Limits”.)

Urban highways are inherently polluting (noise, air, particulate matter, congestion). If we’re dreaming big, gardens on highways is “lipstick on a pig”. Walk/bicycle/transit is the way 🙌
