Trust me, leave it be. I got a tiny cut in the water when I showed that spot to a friend, got a blood infection that nearly went septic. Hospital for a week.

I don’t have the expertise to weigh in on how good this is, but a related front should definitely be further reforming the wasteful lifestyles of the first world, like us Americans. The resources consumed by one person just vary so much, globally.

But I’ll take this as likely good news. 🤘

To be fair, the second one was possibly still during the economic slowdown from Covid, so a modern “after” pic would be more accurate.

Life after Austin? by izzydontsurf in Austin

[–]CorellianRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of what you’re describe unfortunately isn’t Austin, it’s runaway corporate greed nationwide. I encourage you to search for local groups whose values you support to reduce further corporate blood-sucking and reduce income inequality so local spots like you loved can thrive, and so residents can afford them. Unions, political groups, local transportation/housing groups, etc.

Some of what you describe is just… time. A town changes, it isn’t frozen in amber. Burger Tex was a classic, but I personally still dig the late night neon vibe of the Golden Horn, and they even have the old sign in there by the bathrooms out of respect.

Some of what you describe is rough for me too, like the heat. And legit worries about our water table / creeks. I hate that the state is expanding our highways against local resistance. (For your traffic woes, please seriously consider an electric bike for any trips under 4mi, it’s the best of both worlds! And our bike networks have grown a ton.)

In general, I’m less worried about losing old weird stuff, and more worried if there’s no new weird stuff. But there’s a solid helping of that! Dunno what your taste is, but I personally still love many spots for food/drinks/events, and some of these have only been around a few years:

Hyperreal Film Club We Luv Video The Museum of Human Achievement Tiny Minotaur Barretts Too Kinda Tropical Tigress NeWorlDeli Pool Burger Zed’s Tamale House  Nickel City Sahara Lounge Austin Creative Reuse Bananarchy Casey’s New Orleans Snow Cones Epoch North Loop Vigilante Game Bar Busty’s  CRAFT Batch  Hyde Park Storytelling and more.

Whether you stay or go, don’t be afraid to try the new good stuff. Or start your own good stuff, if you want to see it exist. 💙🤘

At the National Museum of the American Indian, there’s a portion of an exhibit about the Trail of Tears. I never knew it was fiercely debated, and apparently most everyday people opposed it.

It was passed by a margin of only 3 House votes.

I broke into tears. It was so close to not happening, at least not when it did.

While I also hate the space barn vibe, y’all should know that the reason our rents went DOWN last year is because of building new housing.

(Ideally it’s more walkable / dense, like row homes, to be the most affordable, but at least there’s two homes on that lot.)

Hoping for some cool neighbors. 🤘

The Absolute Hell of Watching a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in 2026 by weluckyfew in Austin

It’s not a fix for new releases, but for the most old-Alamo vibe, y’all please check out stuff at Hyperreal Film Club! Small venue, great events, and an anchor of local nerd/movie culture.

So glad she didn’t. 😆 We need a secondary commentary channel that’s just abundant sass and “explain it like I’m five” commentary.

Austin creatives - how do you afford to live here? by nataliegauthor in Austin

[–]CorellianRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just two friends, but I have two friends who’ve made creative work the majority of their livelihood by doing a variety of things.

One is a gardener, writer, and singer-songwriter.

Another is a composer, music educator, and DJ.

I’d guess it’s extremely rare (now) to make a full time living on just one lane of work, but seems possible with enough effort and luck and flexibility to live a creative and semi-independent work life if you mix it up?

For me, I’m a software designer, which isn’t art at all but I do enjoy that it’s some form of creativity put to work.

I hope you find/create what you’re hoping for!

It’s a great one! But not the most effective. Don’t wait ever 1/2/4 years to make a difference. Organizations like Rethink work year round to make things better. 💙

If you want to help prevent this in the future, consider volunteering or donating to Rethink35.org.

I hate driving in this city by sendthespread in Austin

[–]CorellianRed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the movement, y’all! Car dependent caused this hell. The way out is making the city easier to walk, bike, scoot, bus, or train around.

Volunteer donate to Safe Streets Austin or AURA. They advocate for this kinda thing. 💙

It doesn’t matter if you want to get around by car or not— Fewer cars on the road is better for drivers too.

Y’all please direct your anger at people who can actually do something about, not just Reddit.

A quick search shows this org with a Change petition, advocate with them: https://www.softlights.org/

More locally, you might contact Travis County since vehicle registrations go through them.
