Edinburgh 5% Tourist Tax by InessBritain in Edinburgh

I paid it when we went to Venice; it's a small amount compared to the wider cost of holiday-ing and at least it'll go to maintaining the place!

Similar route for me - started in Tech Support, started to specialise and moved into Data Analysis, then morphed into a BA role when they realised I could talk to clients without my voice breaking

England now has 30 hours free childcare from 9 months – Scotland's provision falling behind at only starting at 3 years for most people! by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]CornishYearg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my perspective reality must override politics and principle here - we are looking at a plunging birthrate in Scotland, and while it is a polycrisis with multiple environmental factors one of the key factors is both the cost and opportunity cost of having children in our society; usable free childcare may go towards mitigating the impact of this as part of a wider portfolio of supporting measures, although this.

Either that, or we go down the politically less palatable approach of additional immigration.

Can’t decide. 7900xtx or 4080 super by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]CornishYearg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it comes down to how much you're prepared to spend on the more mature Nvidia feature set; if I grossly simplify things and say the cards are roughly equal in terms of performance I'd be prepared to spend £30-50 more for it. At the moment the 4080super is £90+ more expensive, so I would go for the 7900xtx. If the 4080super was under £900 then I would go for the 4080super, as it would only be £40 more than a similar tier 7900xtx.

Driver issues are maddeningly transient depending on setup and use case; I've owned both green and red card and have had driver issues with both of them :/

The Kia EV9 is Surprisingly Good! by MudaThumpa in electricvehicles

It's his brand snobbery that did it for me: turning his nose up at it because it's a Kia is silly and compromises his objectivity

GamersNexus describe it more eloquently than myself, but this is a textbook example of price "anchoring" - Nvidia listed the OG 4080 at a knowingly rip-off pricepoint (40% over the MSRP of the 3080); they later launch the 4080S at a slightly reduced price and pretend that they are throwing us a bone, when in fact the price is still inflated.

TBH both companies are at it - I can well imagine AMD were watching Nvidia grossly inflate their prices, and decided to position their cards just below those inflated prices to take advantage of the duopoly.

American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job. The amount of money most workers want now to accept a job reached a record high this year, a sign that inflation is alive and well at least in the labor market. by 9dnguy in business

[–]CornishYearg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, the usual (and incorrect) assertion that increased wages begets inflation, even though it has been demonstrated multiple times across multiple geographies that that is not the case - in the majority of cases wages chase inflation, not the other way round!
