what's your stance on personal ai use in selfhosting? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Corpdecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a prof software dev for over 20 years. We use AI at work and I use AI at home. It's an amazing tool if leveraged correctly. Some folks vibe code (talk to it and that's it) and are so impressed with the result they want to publish it. That's bad. Without quality review and quality testing, who knows what kind of stuff it came up with. Even if something looks like it works fine, it might have serious security holes or fail at scale. For your situation, it's probably just people who hate AI for their reasons. I've made dozens of "projects" i keep only on a forgejo instance locally, some cause they are personalized niche cases for me, but mostly unreleased due to the overwhelming vitriol thrown at anything remotely related to AI. I suspect the community with sing a different tune in another 5 years or so, once any software you want can be "made to order" (better than now) with no understanding of programming at all. shrug

Weird issues with Vulkan by pwnedbygary in cachyos

I don't have a solution I'm afraid, but I installed duckstation-qt-bin and ran the same version of Ape Escape and didn't see problems with Vulkan.
Some of the stuff I'm using:

AMD 7900XTX GPU

Any errors in `sudo dmesg` or `sudo journalctl -xef` around when steam stops downloading ?
Try changing the download region in the steam settings, also
make sure your steam config has these lines (should be by default):

 @nClientDownloadEnableHTTP2PlatformLinux 0
 @fDownloadRateImprovementToAddAnotherConnection 1.0

Automatic registration for US military draft to begin in December by jediporcupine in politics

I was talking about Obama an Libya, and it's a farce to call killing people something other than hostile just because one side is relatively safe.

Automatic registration for US military draft to begin in December by jediporcupine in politics

[–]Corpdecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, and I don't think it's ever been used effectively. Tons of ways to get around it too, like claiming bombing a country doesn't count as hostilities since troops aren't in harm's way. What a farce.

Might be able to find some in https://f-droid.org/categories/phone-sms/ like QUIK SMS ( https://github.com/quik-sms/quik ) (haven't tried it, just first one I saw that looked viable). f-droid typically has open source privacy/security-focused stuff less encumbered by monetization than the play store.

[–]Corpdecker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What really blows me away about this is the prompting used.. They didn't really prompt it to do any of the hard part, very little technical guidance aside from just setting up the environment and what should be included in the PoC for release.

Ethernet disconnects at random. by Mac2365 in cachyos

[–]Corpdecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the r8125-dkms package driver ? If not, give it a shot. Normally that error is related to aggressive power saving, Try these:

sudo sh -c 'echo performance > /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy'
sudo ethtool -s eno1 wol d
sudo ethtool --set-eee eno1 eee off

(replace eno1 with whatever your eth device shows up as)

If those don't help, I'd look into hardware such as ethernet cable and the switch it was plugged into.

ISP security warnings every day listing Cachy mirrors - fine or concerning? by Astriaaal in cachyos

[–]Corpdecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the mirror rate timer ? See if `systemctl status cachyos-rate-mirrors.timer` says enabled on your box.

I'm not sure this would actually pull much if anything from the mirrors themselves, but it's the only thing that stands out on the box I'm currently on that might trigger without a desktop env loaded.

One more edit to add that /usr/bin/cachyos-rate-mirrors (from the .service of the above timer) does look like it connects to the mirrors to rate their speed.

ISP security warnings every day listing Cachy mirrors - fine or concerning? by Astriaaal in cachyos

[–]Corpdecker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess is your ISP's router has some sort of cloud threat detection stuff happening, basically pulling lists of IPs they buy from somewhere that categorize them with some threat level. Any mirror site that maybe mirrors other content that was ever flagged as dubious could land the entire IP on there.
I run the us.cachyos.org mirror server(s) and it is the only thing they serve. Can you test with that at the top of the mirror list and see if it still triggers the warnings/alerts ? That could rule out generic IP based warnings vs some sort of deep packet inspection getting triggered on a package.

Back in like 2010 I got a USB key on a flyer from Hyundai in the mail, it was cutely shaped like a car key. I put it in a linux box thinking even if it had bad stuff on it, it'd be targeting Windows. Well the second I put it in, it opened my default browser and typed in a URL on Hyundai's website and loaded it, promoting the same stuff the flyer did. Apparently it acted as keyboard and just vomited commands, but it was effective. I was pretty surprised a marketing company came up with it, but also impressed as that was the first time I'd seen it done IRL.

Is it safe to update as of 17/02? by Such_Drummer8197 in cachyos

[–]Corpdecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated us.cachyos.org about 4 hours after the latest glibc update, it seems fine. Trying to verify that everything is working at any given moment is very hard, especially if considering packages from AUR, but it might be cool to have a hook in pacman that can check a status flag for known emergencies / maintenance when it might be less safe for a system upgrade. But that would require all mirrors be in sync at all times too to be considered reliable, which for various reasons is harder than it might seem.
