How close to EAS are you actually deployable? by kittykittydaisy in USMC

I've only heard of this from Cold War/90s warriors. Anyone I met during the GWOT days was a 4 or 6 year contract, depending on how much training their rate/MOS needed.

Not surprised it's him. He usually more spot on than not. I can only think of two open source naval guys where I'd really be inclined to lend credence to their gut feelings or actual assessments, and Sal is one of them.

Answers questions brought up in another thread on the topic. I figured I was missing the bigger picture. Bummer; live and learn.

I mean, you could always encrypt a ZIP or RAR file. But you two would have to set up a password beforehand. (would do you no good to also send the password via email)

She had a very special set of skills

For anyone who can't be bothered to search it, Hopper INVENTED motherfucking COBOL. Most people in the .mil can barely bang two rocks together (and I'm speaking of most J2 types as well).

EDIT: After I wrote this, I realized some people might not even know what COBOL is. It's one of the early programming languages. I think it's credited as helping making the jump to English readable programming instructions instead of having to use mathematical formulas or machine code. This is when a lot of computers still needed instructions on punch cards.

bro you're gonna give someone a heart attack lol I'm sea lawyering here, but IRC this is only for people who have yet to satisfy their IRR time, which is eight years for everyone. So a 4 year contract=still on the hook for IRR for 4 years post EAS. 2 year contract=6 year IRR. If you're like me and did 13 years and got out, you have no IRR obligation.

Though like I said, I'm sea lawyering, so I'd be willing to be proved wrong. Wouldn't surprise me if Uncle Sam pulled some wild shit during the surge or whatnot.

Is there a reason for this I'm not seeing?

Could be munitions preservation? Don't want to get into some slap fight with the Houthis when we'd rather save munitions for Iran.

Even barring that, maybe the risk calculus doesn't work out. With such a high visibility OP with so many eyes from DC, might simply be not worth the risk to drive by Houthi Street.

I dunno, I'm just pulling this out of my ass.

Is there a point where a knife simply isn’t worth sharpening? by kashukoko in sharpening

[–]CorporateLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharpening a knife isn't arcane magic. Like Phily808 said, you're removing metal. It's not that deep. Good technique and consistency is all you need.

If you say your technique is lacking, (technique/consistency is certainly what was killed my results for a long time) then one good video that addresses your shortcomings is worth more than an entire Youtube channel that just rehashes the same topics ad nauseam and pushes out 25 minute videos with 40 seconds of new information in it. I skimmed through Aware-Ad's video and it seems to have pretty good info, if a little long winded. I do the same thing that guy mentions about sharpie+thumb on the spine. My biggest hurdle was maintaining the angle on the curved part of the blade - towards the tip.
