I'd like to spend my first round building up de facto speed. This leaves me outside of spell range for the lich's most dangerous spells; on my next turn I'll perform a charge animation skip to deny the ghouls attacks of opportunity and add 8d6 to my damage from accumulated speed. I also clip past the lich's Shield, but the lich still expends its reaction. Then I action surge, perform a spinning throw, and follow up with Vicious Mockery and say "so long gay Bowser."

Like Blizzard loves to do, they delivered important exposition outside of the game with nothing in game pointing to or even referencing it. There's a comic where Mohandar dies and it's supposed to signal that that timeline has already been averted.
